Close Bros Handicap Chase

I tried to help and failed.

:triumphant:

Thank you for trying!

Basically... Lough Derg Spirit is "in good form thank you. We can't wait to see him run"

I tried :highly_amused:

Big picture, but there you go, Gem.

Good news, like his chances.

Well done Tim. Top man. ^Above.

Grech and Parkin are fab owners, very giving with their time it seems and happy to answer most questions from experience

This market must be one of the worst/toughest right now

8 horses between 9/1 and 10/1
(none of mine either)

Red Indian - 25/1 NRNB - 5 places
Ben Dundee - 20/1 NRNB - 4 places
Moon Over Germany - 25/1 NRNB - 4 places
Lough Derg Spirit - 22/1 - 5 places
Speaker Connolly - 20/1 NRNB and 22/1 - 5 places

Not unhappy with those but plenty shorter that are interesting too.

Agree , My shortlist - Highway one o one.
Capeland . - arkle ??.
Pravalaguna.
A plus tard.
L.D.S.
Tower bridge. - m. pipe ?.
Ballywood . - coral ?.

Paravalaguna is the one but jeez it’s hard work trying to find out if she’ll run

Yes - I backed her for the JLT immediately after that last win and then for the Close once I saw she had that entry too. Both NRNB etc.

Seeing as Campeador has departed from the race I decided to add a couple of others:

Dell Oro 40/1

Azzerti 20/1

Taking my bets in this race to 4, other 2 being Lough Derg Spirit 20/1 & Riders Onthe Storm 15.4/1. That will be me done provided the above 2 get in.

With Glen Forsa on board this was the easiest handicap of the week. It is now much closer to a punting nightmare. You could easily go through putting a line through everything. I suspect that these in the long-term are not much better than an ordinary bunch of handicappers.

I have backed Riders Onthe Storm a few times but for me he has promised far more than he has delivered and he has consistently found next-to-nothing off the bridle. Cheltenham is the last place for a faint heart. It seems Cooper has chosen him over Quamino.

Of the others I wouldn't be rushing to back Ross Chapman on anything; Tower Bridge doesn't jump and Castafiore has no form on this sort of track. Plenty of others you would think would be compromised by both track and soft ground.

Shady Operator is the one here for me lads. Cant believe he's double the price of his stable mate Tower Bridge when you compare the form of both over fences. Hopefully a nice mention from Joseph tonight or maybe they're keeping quiet for a late JP gamble :devilish:

I've topped up on the 20/1 e/w Sky are still kindly offering!

Yes... absolutely.

Went off 25/1 for a Grade 1 (Kauto Star) - same price now in a loads easier race than a Grade 1!

The RP comments read:

"Made most to 12th, lost 2nd place 14th, steadily outpaced after, not disgraced"

Not ideal to unseat at 1/5 after that, but coming back in trip, on a mark of 145 so certain to get a run... I can see the appeal. He was good enough to lead La Bague Au Roi which is pacey enough...

The prominent racing style will definitely be a positive in a big field handicap - I know the chap on RP made a case about him and it was something to do with Bags Groove but I'm not sure BG ran his race when Red Indian was ahead so I wouldn't take that literally... but not a negative whichever way you skin it!

Added 1.25 pts e/w 25/1 - 5 places - NRNB

Just been watching a rerun of the Kauto Star and think this is a great shout lads. That was just about the best single piece of novice chase form we’ve seen IMO and he travelled like a dream and looked like he’d be suited by a step down in trip, certainly on a more galloping track. Add to that his previous, pretty good festival form, I can’t believe that you can still get 25s... surely he’ll be found on the day and can see him going off much shorter.

Some people can't have average northern jocks - who fall off in three horse races - in much more competitive races. His good run last year was achieved under David Bass. Chalk and cheese. These jocks sometimes have their one day in the sun but it usually involves everything going right on the day and on balance I think it is easy to see why he is a big price.

I was at a bit of a loss for this one as the only bets I had on were Discorama (as I backed it NRNB for every entry it had whilst hoping it went for the 4m, so happy with that) and Pravalaguna (also backed for the JLT). Whilst having a bit of a scan round last night I sorted the field by RPRs, as I tend to do sometimes when looking for a bit of inspiration.

Up pops Springtown Lake. Hobbs is in the Weekender this week and seems to think he's on a fair mark - plausible excuses last time (up in trip, ground too quick), good run prior to that to be beaten less that 2 lengths by Mr Whipped at Haydock giving it 7lb. That was only a 4 runner race but looking at times (as well as watching it back) they were only 'slow' by 13.2 seconds on Heavy ground so it wasn't a silly race.

Chase debut was in a Novices Limited Handicap at Sandown off top weight (137, 11st 13lb) - made all with some reasonable types in behind.

Gets in here off 141 - hopefully with Dickie on board going from the front I can think of worse 20/1 NRNB shots. Have also backed it at 25/1 NRNB for the Plate on the same basis. Hobbs says it will run in whichever race is likely to have the softer ground.

PS - Just noted after posting - owner also has part of Clondaw Castle, which they've re-routed to The Arkle. I'm taking that as a positive, but then I would!!

What's the implication from the first line or two?

How many punters are looking at their selections hoping they will have an average northern jock on board. The standard of northern jocks is terrible. Hardly a surprise that Hughes gets the best rides and regularly cleans up. There simply isn't that much competition. As I said they will occasionally have their day, but I doubt this will be one them.

When you say "Northern".
Do you mean ?
Where they were born ?
Where they live ?
Where their main stable of rides comes from ?
Which tracks they ride at more often ?

And what's classed as North for you ?

a lot of questions there, but most are yes or no, so should be easy enough.
