Supreme Novices 2017

The rest of the field was prob Muck but I was watching Melon only the whole way round. I was very impressed by that. Travelled super and is hurdling technique was very good. He was quick over most of them.

He travelled well there and was quick, but as you say KSS he hasnt beat a whole lot.

I have moon racer in a few of my AP bets but Melon will be going in any of the remainder after that performance, mighty impressive performance even though he hasn't beaten a great deal and 5/1 looks a very very fair price on what could be a weak renewal of the race. Come raceday I could see the horse shortening right up to around 3s with people hopping on the Mullins/walsh bandwagon on day 1

Melon could be the one...

He certainly looks the one that'll shorten for the Irish... Obvious, but only won a maiden.

I backed Melon in about August at 20s because of the rumour circling that he Ricci tried to buy him... so purely based on hype. I still think he'll shorten even now... problem for people before was knowing what had the best form... we still don't know, so hard to know where to throw your dart(s)?.

Even without another run, if Ruby picked Melon... he'd half in price again... 5/2 the field?

I thought he was electric at his hurdles, considering it was his first race. I'd also be happy if they went straight to Cheltenham.

Now I am sat with a 125/1 double, Melon and Altior... so I would LOVE to be as enthusiastic as you... but a once raced maiden winning the Supreme? That can't have happened before? Probably not been attempted very often?

The vibes have been strong most of the season regarding Melon, and I believe they deserve to be, because of the connections alone ... BUT CF, Faugheen, Douvan, Min had all achieved way more. Douvan had the fewest prep runs, but the vibes regarding him were more bullish than any of the others and I don't think ther vibes have been comparable?

He settled nicely, jumped very well and looked extremely pacey too my eye. The lack of experience wouldn't bother me but Mullins will do what he thinks is needed. They have lots of schooling races in Ireland and they could possibly put him in one of them.

I loved the interview with connections afterwards. The owner (ex bookie) said he hasn't been too watch any of his horses since he retired from bookmaking, and Willie has trained 8 winners for him. Strange that he turned up to watch Melon today - I think they know he's pretty good?!

The vibes probably aren't comparable because he isn't owned by Rich Ricci.

Go back 20+ years the Supreme used to favour ex flat horses and although none spring to mind I'm sure there were winners who had just a single hurdle run, though these horses would have greater experienced from their flat days so would have had more than one racecourse run.
Race has changed much since then....

The time of Melons race was pretty good 3min 47sec
Especially considering he was eased off and it was his first run
I would like to see another run before Cheltenham, not sure if that is possible
Will probably wait till the day to back it,only if Walsh rides

I thought Willian Henry ran a nice trial race for the Supreme. I think the strong pace they will go over a shorter trip of 2mile could suit and he is an interesting EW runner if he lines up. His jumping caught my eye on Saturday, very quick and efficient over his hurdles. Might lack the class to win it, but this race has been won by superstars the last 3/4 years and good chance that there is not a horse of those recent levels in the field this year.
Don't think it would have beaten Wholestone, but the omission of the hurdles in the race worked against William Henry and think it would have gone closer had they jumped the full number of hurdles.

Charli Parcs 8/1 on the exchanges.... blue across Oddschecker.... 7/1 NRNB still available.... I'd be taking that if I hadn't already!

I don't even know exactly why but I just love this horse already.

Im on nothing in this race yet. Charli is gonna be my bet I think. He oozed class in his last run, way too big for this, maybe because the target isnt confirmed

Think it's looking clear that Charlie would be a Supreme runner, unless JP has a couple of his that rout the field in the Betfair Hurdle.

Really taken by his debut- just want to see him on a stiffer track next.

I was very taken with Melons performance yesterday, although the time wasn't out of the ordinary in what was a very moderate race. That performance would have to be up with some of the best ive seen this season.

4yo dont win supreme hurdles

More 4 year olds have won the race than 8+ year olds in history, which would immediately discount long time pre-race favourite, Moon Racer.

That said, I fancy neither, but just thought I'd point it out.

Melon was indeed as impressive as he could be, that time was irrelevant, the race was run steady by some average horse and Melon done it on the bridle. Plenty more to come from him, the size of him though, well, chaser in the making.
