Cheltenham Festival Handicaps

Cant help but think Elliot blew his chances of a county hurdle title exposing Micks Jazz yesterday. Very annoyed as ive had MJ down as my handicap snip for the festival for months now after his eyecatching 3rd behind campeador. Bugger.

He most definitely did. Mick Jazz had 141 for the Betfair Hurdle which would have been perfect for the County Hurdle and been one of the better handicap bets of the week. After winning that Listed Novice Hurdle I'm sure he'll get a revised mark for Cheltenham now.

Mick Jazz put up 8lbs in Ireland to 142 which is higher than he had for the Betfair. For Cheltenham he'll be close to 150 now which will probably go against him from a stats perspective.

Yes a really pleasing run. It looks solid form. I backed the winner as well as I thought he looked really well handicapped as well and Oscar Sam always runs well at Punchestown. He was keen early as well, so I think a strongly run race on better ground will suit him better than today.

Percy has been nudged up 1lb to 130 in Ireland. That should be enough to get a run in the Final.

Cheers Jackie. Yes looking forward to him running. Pertemps is always a difficult race but as it has become more difficult to plot one it has become an easier race to predict.

Can someone tell me , how the Final line up is picked ,
in the Pertemps final please, ie, is it just the winners from
each qualifier that go through or what ?,

I think you need to have finished in the top 6 in one of the qualifiers to be eligible. The final field is then decided on those with the highest rating.

A note from Ricci's blog which I found interesting:

I notice one of my horses, Chacun Pour Soi, has come in for support for the Martin Pipe Conditionals hurdle on the final day of the festival and he is a horse we like a lot.

He has already won his hurdle in France last season so is not a novice anymore, and it was just a sense that we would be sending him over fences too young if we took that decision this winter. We’ve done that only once before - and that was Djakadam - and so I’m more than happy to sit it out and wait for him.

The one thing I’d say to those thinking about backing him for Cheltenham though, is that he is a horse for the future and while he could still turn up for the festival it would be a big ask for him to do so first time out for us.

Thanks for that, Faugheen, Jackie moon.

Someone on here a couple of months back that Crack Tiepy would be the Ricci horse for the Martin Pipe race, unsure how true it was, currently is 20/1 NRNB which seem fair.

Novices have had a decent record in recent years so not a bad angle to explore.

Tudor City

Tudor City ran a cracker to finish second in the Coral.ie Hurdle at Leopardstown on Sunday. Held up in mid-division by Robbie Colgan through the early stages of the race, Tony Martin’s horse was a little keener than ideal in his first-time cheekpieces, and a fairly significant error at the second last flight in the back straight didn’t help.

Still travelling well on the run to the second last flight around the inside, he wasn’t very good at that obstacle either, he landed hind legs first, but he still travelled really well around the home turn. He was further back than ideal at that point and in traffic, and he still didn’t have a clear run on the approach to the final flight as he picked up. He did get a gap and he jumped that flight well before setting out after Ice Cold Soul, but that rival picked up well in front and wasn’t for catching. Tudor City closed to a half a length in the end, but it never really looked like he was going to catch Noel Meade’s horse.

This was another fine run from John Breslin’s horse. This was a highly-competitive handicap hurdle, and it was run in a good pace and in a good time. It was probably the best of Tudor City’s life.

He has not won yet in nine attempts over hurdles, but he has finished second in his last three runs, and he won on the flat at Limerick on his previous run. He continues to progress, he seems to thrive in these big-field handicaps, and he goes well on goodish ground. As such, he could be a horse for the County Hurdle or even, looking further ahead, the Galway Hurdle. He won a handicap on the flat at the Galway Festival in 2015, and he ran a cracker to finish second in a handicap hurdle at Cheltenham last November on his only run at the track.

The handicapper raised him by 4lb for Sunday’s run, which brings him up to a mark of 128, and that is fine. He will be of interest again in a similar type of race off that mark.

Based on last years bottom weight in the County Hurdle, he'll need his mark inflating by 10lb to ensure a run. This could be one of those times when Phil Smith is conservative in his UK rating.

Killer Crow.
Finished a staying on 5th in last year Irish National and always looked like he needed a trip, Elliot had been running this on over an inadequate 2m-2m 4f and seen his mark tumble.
I have no idea what his target may be but take a second look if he gets entered.
Remarkable the horse is having his 12th run on the season and this will be his 31st race having just turned 8.
KC was well touted for last years 4 miler so 2m today has to be another attempt to get the mark dropped.....

CoC

CoC

I cant have COI for any of the handicaps after his latest exploits. The 4 miler looks too short for such a plodder imo.

I backed him last year and have been plotting his progress this year. I can't say I've seen anything this year that indicates he is as good as last year

Have backed this at 12/1 n.r.n.b. Well not start 12/1 if he runs. The Pipe family like his race and the horse was staying on well at the end of his last race which was over a distance short of his best- this being Champers on Ice.

Killer Crow was only entered in the novice H'cap on the first day last year as far as I can remember - he was one of my biggest ante-post bet last year as he was said to be so well handicapped, but he ended up missing the cut for that by one. I've kept a watching brief since as I've been convinced he's so well handicapped and will pop up at some point, but it seems he just really isn't that good. He's become one of my cliff horses, so I'm sure he'll come in the first time I don't actually back him

HE - you're probably right, but he was in the betting for all 3 novice chases in the lead up to the festival, I think one high profile presenter called this one for the 4 miler.
he needs to be watched when entered over a trip...
