Aintree Day 1 2022

Manifesto Novices Chase.

The best hurdlers here are Pic d'Orhy and Millers Bank and there wasn't much between them LTO when Pic d'Orhy jumped better. But I can't help thinking these are good hurdlers who are trying to be chasers. For me the Mildmay course is a searching jumping test. War Lord ticks many trend boxes but I'm not convinced he merits the short price and may be better at 2miles. Pic d'Orhy had no chance against l'Homme Presse but was disappointing to lose 2nd place in the Scilly Isles novices' chase.

The two I like for their jumping are Gin on Lime and Erne River. Erne River has been swimming in shallower waters but had no problem jumping round Wetherby LTO - he just has a nice straightforward running style and has won on good ground over hurdles though may prefer softer ground (there's been rain today). Ok he may just not be good enough against the classier hurdlers. Hard to know that until the race itself. Gin on Lime needs good/gs and is very much a spring/autumn horse. I thought she was going to give My Drogo a real race at Cheltenham until the 2nd last fence incident. She has won after a break before and is a slick jumper.

Selection: Gin on Lime
Next best: Erne River

Jewson Juvenile Hurdle

Horses who run well in the Triumph have a good record in this. In time we may well see that was an above average Triumph and it wouldn't be a big surprise if one of the first three goes on to to take Honeysuckle's crown though she will not relinquish it easily of course (2024 rather than 2023). Winning the Fred Winter wth top wt is an impressive feat but Brazil has had a busier season and I think Pied Piper ran all the way to the line - just beaten by slightly better horses on the day. This race seems either to be won at a short price or a longer double figure price. It seems to me In The Air is the best value of the French imports. I've also been wondering about Hendo's high priced runner but his form suggests he's not good enough for this.

Selection: Pied Piper
e/w In The Air

Aintree Hurdle

Horses that run in the Champion Hurdle do well in this race whereas 5-y-os don't. I can't see many reasons to prefer Zanahiyr over Epatante. Neither have form over 2m4f but I think the older horse is more likely to handle the longer trip. But for Honeysuckle Epatante could have regained her crown this year.

Selection: Epatante

Betway Bowl

Having rewatched some races I'm going to switch to Conflated for this. There was no fluke about the Irish Gold Cup and I liked the way he moved through the field in the Ryanair. I don't think he would have caught Allaho but looked as though he would be a good second. Anything Mullins runs has to be respected. There was no apparent reason for Kemboy's poor run LTO but he ran much better in the Savills Chase and it must be significant that Mullins runs Kemboy in this but enters ABP and TF in the old Whitbread. I wouldn't be surprised if Eldorado Allen runs another good race

Selection: Conflated
Next best: Kemboy

Mares' bumpers wouldn't be my kind of thing at all, but given Bowen's record at the meeting, and his only runner being River of Joy at 40/1 in it, rude not to have a small bite

Did this also.

It's reassuring to see that it isn't just me that took this approach.

quite a few multiples covering most of those listed above

charlie im sure it was you that was pretty bullish when pied piper come over to Cheltenham prior to the festival … have you heard anything in regards to tomorrow for him?

Gin On Lime
Kemboy
Zanahiyr
Before Midnight

Yankee for me tomorrow, good luck all:barbershop_quartet_member:

Epatante can be ridden with TLC today unlike when Honeysuckle was a huge worry in the Champion Hurdle. Can't see past her.

Pied Piper will be all the rage but he may not be as good as first thought. Happy to lay him if he goes odds on the machine.

Royale Pagaille EW looks a safe bet in the Bowl

Marracudja EW for no real reason other than having an interest

Before Midnight with STD up should go very close

EDIT.
Ashroe Diamond, according to one of the many owners, has been working well and Patrick has been wasting to do 11stone which is about his minimum.....I am not a bumper fan but 9/2 EW 5 places is too tempting to miss.

Pic D'ohry got some good form over fences imo. Only time he's been beaten this season (when completing) was when challenging L'homme Presse for the lead for a couple of miles at Sandown, which was a very big ask. Don't think any of these are top class but they've found him a good opportunity to win a Grade 1 here. I'd have him favourite but he's third in the market at the moment. Can see why Gin On Lime is a popular alternative, of the rest.

Stuck Pied Piper in some multiples also myself. Probably won't have a single myself, as he's short enough for me now. I do wonder if Knight Salute might be better suited to this than he was the triumph but he's got a hell of a ground to make up with PP. The first five home in the triumph were Irish trained as well so they're likely just a much better bunch of juveniles, as it always looked tbf.

Despite the conversation about the gap post Cheltenham I'm willing to take the 7/2 on Protektorat in the Bowl. He's only had the three starts this season and had a three month break before Cheltenham so it's not like he's over raced. I think he's better than these at this stage of his career though, we know the course suits and the only thing that I can see to actually beat him is the initial point about not being over the Gold Cup. At the prices I'm willing to chance that. Think Kemboy is probably the danger and have missed the prices slightly there but may still look to save.

Small bet on Monmiral based on last year's win at this meeting but no strong opinions here. I've backed Zanahiyr for next year's Stayers so a good run from him would also be nice.

Followed a few in with Porlock Bay in the Foxhunters but it's hard to see past Jett. Ran a cracker up to 2 out in last year's National and a repeat of that should be more than enough here. In the context of these conditions Sam Waley Cohen is obviously a positive as well. The top Irish amateurs don't look to have bothered.

Before Midnight should go well in the handicap chase as an obvious one and I quite like Sky Pirate off top weight as well. Assume they were trying to get him back for the Grand Annual and then it came up heavy on the day there. Dropped 3lb for that effort though and he's only 1lb above his Grand Annual win from last year now. He's been busy but the GA was his 6th run of last season, so he obviously takes his racing alright. Hopefully the ground remains decent for him here and I'd be looking for a big run. He's 18/1 with 5 places at the moment but might even drift from there.

Following a few of you in blind with Bowen's in the bumper as well.

GL all.

No haven't heard anything. I wouldn't back him today at his current price but I hope he wins

Thanks - is short although couldn’t see him being much higher tbh

My Aintree record is fairly miserable, so I'm trying something new. Limited bank, and just trying one selection per race, with a lil multiple each day.

So I'm saying

Gin on Lime 1pt win
Fautinette 1pt ew
Conflated 2pt win
Zanahiyr 2pt win
Porlock bay 2pt ew
King D'Argent 1pt ew
River of Joy 0.5 pt ew

Done a trixie and a treble of Conflated/Zanahiyr/Porlock Bay

Edit: Added a last minute 1pt yankee of GoL/Conflated/Epatente/Ashroe Diamond

Hi all . First post on the forum for myself , Always enjoy reading everybody’s angles to races on here and the knowledge everyone possesses.

today I am going for a double of

1.45 - erne river
2.55- protektorat

i think the jonjo horse may beat Brazil and PP

And an each way shout for stand up and fight in the 4.05

all the best guys

Aaron

The Foxhunters - not a betting race for me but a fascinating race with amateur riders and small stables taking on the big fences and some of the big stables. Often chaotic given the field size and the fact that the race is shorter than the 3 mile+ races most of these horses are used to. Experience of the fences is important but horses can with out it and at a big price as well e.g. Cousin Pascal!

Jett has class (once beat The Storyteller in a Gde 2 at Fairyhouse) a very capable amateur and we know jumps these fences well - a worthy favourite but a very low price in a race like this with 24 runners. Cat Tiger has some classy English and French form, a jockey who wins races despite the ungainly style and being a year older CT may see out the trip better than last year. Cousin Pascal is a big price for being such a good winner last year and I thought Clondaw Westie would have done much better last year had the jockey stayed on the inside. She should know better this time and prefers CW to Reikers Island. Late Night Pass is in good form and has a v good jockey also.

Of the more fancied horses I like Jett, Cat Tiger and Cousin Pascal
At better prices Clondaw Westie, Myth Buster and Stand Up and Fight
For high priced outsiders - Golden Tobouggan, Michael's Pick and The Dellercheckout

Too many to back of course but I would think a few of those will be in contention in the closing stages.

Some good choices Aaron - best of luck!

1. Laid Enre River (2 pts)
2. Backed Pied Piper (2 pts)
3. Backed Conflated (0.5 pts) & Kemboy (0.5 pts), Laid Protektorat (2 pts)
4. Backed Epatante (2 pts), Laid Zanahiyr (2 pts)
5. -
6. -
7. Lliade Allen (0.25 pts ew)

I think this is a big step up for Enre River and think something will be just abit better on the day

Like the piep piper form and has been consistent, Brazil could be anything and not much between them on current ratings

really like conflated and think it would have been 2nd if he stayed up, didn’t look like he was given a hard race, kemboy laid out for the race and laying protektorat is based on this being an after thought

mares allowance for Epatante will be a big difference, good performance in the champion hurdle. Zanahiyr has had a long season and plenty of battles this year, I have taken the view that this is just one race too far for a 5 year old

lliade allen moved for a reasonable amount of money, has the allowance on some and not far behind poetic music that did ok in the champion bumper

I've gone for 1pt Win on the below except the 2 highlighted.

Gin On Lime
Petit Tonnare
Kemboy - 2pt Win
Epatante
Pont Aven
Dolos - 1pt EW
Law Ella

Strong support for Gin on Lime...into 11/4
