But last season was different for a few reasons.
I'd imagine the brothers would still want their say but probably not as much as in the past, so Gordon might have more sway.
I also think they may run this type of horse in the UK National, and a prestigous prep race like the four miler would be acceptable for all concerned.
I basically just wanted to call him a massive cunt, but didn't want to offend other cunts. Oops.

The 4 week gap between Cheltenham and Fairyhouse was something I'd overlooked and a very valid point

As someone else mentioned the whole doubt with Covid and the costs to travel and not be able to go will also have made a difference.
Then the Elliott issue, don't forget they said they'd bring none of them over at one point.
        CUNTS. indeed.

He couldn't win the Irish National with what looked like a 'chucked in' 140. The winner was a 20 chase,130 something horse and he gave 3 pounds who has been turned over twice since off his revised mark, and the third's best winning OR was 127 and he was giving him a pound.

We also have to consider that he's now had 7 chases and he's still to get his head in front. Those chases are full of the right kind of form, and putting it all together probably makes him a mid to high 140's horse. That can be corroborated using RPR's too. 7 of his last 9 races were within 9lbs of each other, between 142 and 151, with 6 of those 7 between a very consistent 145-141, a mere 6lbs. That said experience is also a benefit in the race and is worth a few pounds

That experience though is negated in my mind because he hasn't been over the Cheltenham and has no course experience. Sure they have time to fix that, but if they don't enter him at the October meeting I'd be worried that this isn't the target.

It's fair to assume there is the potential for more improvement. But as a direct stable and race comparison, Galvin put up a 159 RPR in a Cheltenham novice chase prior to landing this, and even getting that on the board he only beat the second and third in the NH Chase a length each, which is a benchmark for the level required. We need to see Run wild Fred put up a similar performance or we can't be sure he's in the range required to win the race.

So two things for me he has to prove and I will be looking out for. That all important early season Cheltenham Chase entry, and a RPR that up in the high 150's. If he doesn't do both of these things I'll be ditching him.
RWF’s jumping is still a bit suspect and he often lacks rhythm especially in the latter part of his races when he try’s to get near the front which does make me question whether he has genuine stamina or just running with the choke out for too long and his only tactic for winning is pouncing late in the running. He is gutsy and it would be nice to see him win this season but I can’t see him being a big enough price anytime soon to go each way as everyone seems to think he’s a handicap plot

          • Petibonome who was one I had my eye on as a classic HdB improver for chasing has died.

            • With Dan not regretting missing the "Neptune" because it had a "super impressive" winner, what chance he misses the Marsh if that same horse turns up?

Yes, maybe go to the Arkle, if he shows enough zip over his fences, if Bob O looms large in the Marsh.

He could i suppose, but he might dodge the "super impressive" Supreme winner. Or avoid the M.Pipe winner and the mighty Ahoy Senor in the BANC. I hope i'm wrong but the phrase we'll give Cheltenham a miss and save him for Liverpool may become a catchphrase for Dan.

Its all about getting him to the 2023 GC in one piece by the sound of it so they may take the easiest possible route in his Novice season before going for it in his Gold Cup year.

                    • Anyone know how many horses have won the gold cup without having competed at a previous Cheltenham festival?

                        Coneygree in recent times.

But that was injury related, and a trainer that welcomed a battle, against the best, and binned a Novice Chase opportunity to run and win the Gold Cup instead.

Not some other well known, scaredy-pants British trainers, hiding their horses behind a curtain each March.

Jodami and Imperial Call are the only other ones i can think of in addition to Coneygree

That's the equivalent of training for a tour of Helmand province by playing call of duty
