RSA Chase 2020

Yes I'd be happy with Barry. He's got loads of experience, is used to riding good horses and has multiple festival winners.

I'd prefer Mark Walsh.

I'd prefer Barry to Bryony Frost.

The question was too vague ... no tinnies tonight, still got this horrible cold that everybody on the planet seems to have

:witless:

Sire Du Berlais.
Riverside Theatre
Bob's Worth

That's 3 winning rides you'd have to give credit for.

Lots of bad rides too, but there isn't a single jockey who doesn't fit in to the latter, but not lots of jockeys that fit in the former at the festival

Get to sleep

Not engaging :devilish:

To be fair to Barry he has a good record at winning the big races when it matters. He falls more than De Bonville and Johnson but he’s a solid CV at the festival and I’m confident he will steer Champ around on March 11th as he did Defi and Sire Du Berlais last March.

Sure Du Berlais at Cheltenham last year was an absolute belter to not give up on the favourite. 40 minutes later he gave a perfectly timed patient ride on Defi Du Seuil.

Two very different rides, both executed to perfection

Good or bad?? Over fences Im not sure its that spectacular?

Barry Geraghty has won every Grade 1 chase at the Festival. Last years JLT win was the missing link.

He is joint leading jockey (with Ruby) in the Arkle with 4 wins.
He has won the RSA three times.
He is joint leading jockey with Pat Taaffe in the Champion Chase with 5 wins.
He won his first JLT last year with a stormer on DDS. That and the Pertemps got completely overshadowed by Bryony.
He has only won the one Ryanair on Riverside Theatre - watch it if you havent seen it.
He has two Gold Cups.

This year his GB jumps record is 23% on chasers.

Champ has had his 1st hcap rating change in his last 5 races after being stagnant on 152 for a year. He has been raised 1lb to a lifetime high of 153 following his fall 2 out.

No words needed.

That video where Chapman rattles off 30+ cheltenham winners always makes me laugh!

Way I'd sum up Barry is superb professional and top quality jockey who occasionally puts in a stinker. Other than that he's mustard

Hes the first jockey i try and avoid over fences at the festival. If you wanted to proper analysis would interested to see the prices of the horses hes ridden in the time frame youve used and how many he would of been expected to win, either way Im very comfortable with my perception that he aint getting any better as age catches up with him. He is one I would avoid over fences if its possible.

Don’t like to talk about jockeys in a negative fashion but I think it’s clear to see he’s regressed as a jockey in recent years. He still has some old spark and puts in some great rides from time to time but as a rule of thumb I’d agree with quevega’s assessment. If you owned a large string of horses he wouldn’t be in the top 5 jockeys you’d look at for your stable jockey

100% agree with this, won't touch him for ANY chase at this years festival, whether that ends up biting me in the a**e or not we'll see. Theres nothing worse than crabbing a jockey at every single fence

Racing is interesting in that people dont like to criticise jockeys, you dont really get that in many or any other sports. Yet weve all watched 1,000 of races and you form an opinion based on the experiences youve had watching those races. The argument about how many races have you ridden/won is again pretty bizarre when analysing the outcome of races. I could counter by saying how many 100/1 winners of the national have you backed (after timing!! but the answer is 4 in the last 11 renewals). After all we are trying to find value bets to win money not to actually say that we can ride a horse better than a jockey, which I cant do !! And i suppose thats the problem i have with Barry over fences at Chelt, he goes off way too short and i dont like the way rides round there especially in more recent years.

That's a bit harsh. He ain't that bad. Hopefully he and Champ have learned now.. in some ways that fall could have actually helped looking into the future, come March, I'm sure they'll be ready to rock (I hope!). I maintain, he makes it around, he wins imo.

Not harsh at all just my honest opinion on the guy. I'm not saying he NEVER rides a good race but when putting my money down I would rather have someone I feel would be 90% more likely to ride a better race and give the horse a better chance of winning.

From the minute he was named Champ was always going to be over bet.

Jockey comment is full of confirmation bias. I'd much prefer if people decided they didnt back jockeys they dont rate rather than slagging them off. There arent many other sports where the participants get followed around by ambulances and actually die participating.

Lots of cranky heads doing dry january on here lately ?

It is a strange one with jockeys as I'm sure we all have some high profile ones that we for whatever reason take a disliking too. Personally I don't like Paul Townend on chasers, I wouldn't not back a horse if he was on but I'd rather see someone else on board.

Whilst we’re on the topic I completely agree with this as well. Paul doesn’t get the same tune out of big chasers compared to others jocks. Patrick Mullins over a fence on UDS in the Punchestown champion Chase was outstanding last season and we haven’t seen Paul ever get the same tune out of him as Patrick did that day. Faugheen is another that springs to mind with him.

Paul Townend got a tune out of Willie Mullins' only Gold Cup winner though. I think he'll take that :devilish:

Absolutely he will. Hopefully we can get back on topic here for the RSA! :victorious:
