He'd do him for a turn of foot over 3 miles also.
If you can finish like that over 2m 4f at that pace, you can stay alright enough. Outstayed means he could maintain the gallop more than his opponents, and they were slowing down. The sectionals show this.

pretty sure DDS wouldn't cut out at 2m 4f. and his careful jumping would not be so much of an issue. Think this may cosy him at 2 miles against a better horse/quicker jumper.

Yeah it seems unlikely now after the weekend. I'd give DDS a squeak versus LIT over 3m at Kempton but if they'd both run in the RSA last season, LIT would have won every time for me.

A win on his seasonal reappearance over C&D vs QMCC 2nd to Altior in a race the trainer says he might go for because of his natural speed does not have me rushing to conclude he isn't a 2 miler.

DDS is the better horse at 2m4f but surely he can't be the better horse 'overall' as they've not competed at the further distance. Horses won't perform to the same level at every distance. DDS may well stay all the way to the Gold Cup trip but I'd have to doubt he'd finish off the race the same as he does over shorter.

Until they try we'll never know.
What is becoming clearer though is that he's probably the classiest novice chaser to come out of the UK. But seemed to get put in his place at Punchestown over 2 miles.

The JLT last year was a real test. Robbie Power rode LIT for stamina, and tried to really test the others. They all fell away due to being less classy and/or giving up. They all slowed up the hill and Defi just relentlessly kept going,
Robbie Power was amazed that something passed him.

Anyhow, I can feel another hypothetical discussion gathering pace. We'll probably never know for sure.

The classier horses can pretty much beat the less classy at any trip. It's just there's not always a lot to separate the ability of the top horses, so the conditions on the day can make a but of a difference.
