PERTEMPS NETWORK FINAL Handicap Hurdle

Have watched Fred Rogers last two races back. He'll certainly need to jump much better to be competitive in any race at the festival.

Yeah, he's not for me, especially now his price has gone too.

I'll be waiting for the 8 places on the day and back 2/3 in my EW cross doubles !

I prefer some of Gordons others. I think some are in as 'red herrings' or back ups, should anything happen to his main hopes.

I normally steer clear completely of handicaps until the week itself but have gone against that this year and just stuck Dunboyne and Chemical Energy in my 'Lifechanger' and a separate double. I'll save my remaining bullets until March now and the multiple places on offer which are a huge help.

Only Ardhill of Gordon's mark fishing exercise given below 134.

Ardhill 123
Dundoyne 134
Folcano 135
I A Connect 136
Chemical Energy 137
Mr Fred Rogers 138
Tullybeg 140
Grand Roi 150
Sire du Berlais 158

Winter Fog for Emmet 138

So Mr Fred Rodgers (138) would get in easily provided he qualifies - but it's going to be touch and go with Dunboyne on his current mark (134).

Dunboyne would have made the cut on that mark in the last 3 runnings of the Pertemps - but in the previous 3 years he wouldn't have got a run.

2021: 9 runners rated 134 or below
2020: 3 runners rated 134 or below
2019: 2 runners rated134 or below
2018: lowest runner rated 135
2017: lowest runner rated 137
2016: lowest runner rated 135.

Covid could explain the lower rated horses making the cut in the last 2 years.

Whether it'll have a similar effect this time is anyone's guess.

But Dunboyne could probably do with another 2-3lbs added on so we can all relax - at least until the tapes go up.

Dunboyne is definitely the one most at risk of either not making the cut or potentially blowing his mark if they run again. Gordon has many options so may roll the dice and hope 134 gets a run.

If Winter Fog runs in the Lanzarote and either goes close or wins could that mean at upgrade for Dunboyne's mark?

After getting +10 for Winter Fog, I’m not sure Emmet will risk that mark to win the Lanzarote. He’s currently on a mark that gets him into all his possible races at Cheltenham with a lovely racing weight. My opinion would be that the Festival will take precedence over Kempton.

I'd go with your view Jackie - think I'm clutching at straws.

The other factor could be that Gordon will have so many qualified for the final he might be able to take a few out if he wants one a bit lower down to get in:rugby:

Apologies for asking what is probably a stupid question, but can you please explain how the ratings gain you or exclude you access to this race? Many thanks.

That could be the case that Gordon will have an element of control over Dunboyne getting in if it’s tight.

Hiya Clinker - no problem.
A maximum of 24 runners can take part in the race.
If there are more entries than that the top 24 are chosen based on their official ratings.
But I think I'm right in saying all bookies return stakes if your horse is entered for the race at the final declarations stage and doesn't get in because its rating isn't among the top 24.
Just to complicate matters I see 25 runners were due to go to post in the Pertemps last year. Did they increase the maximum?

Thank you!! It's a minefield for me trying to understand how these handicaps work.

There's been a bit of 'surely the owner ....' discussions recently around targets [some i agree/some i dont], but can you imagine any set of owners being happy to be pulled out so a (presumably) non affiliated horse can take their place in a race? Entry fees and 'runner at chelt' would definitely make me put my foot down in this scenario anyway

Fair point thorne365 - but Gordon's going to have to make some tough calls somewhere along the line.

He's got 6 qualified already that I can recall - and it wouldn't be a surprise to see a couple more get in from Warwick on Saturday.

And he's certainly not going to run them all.

Imagine he's a dab-hand at sweet-talking owners into thinking their horse should skip race A because it would have a stonking chance if they kept it for race B.

Race 'B' being something at Fairyhouse over Easter or Punchestown, a few weeks later - and a bigger pot of money to pick up.
