Marsh Novices Chase 2020 (was JLT)

Good money for Angels Breath before the off here. 9/4 (possibly bigger) earlier.
 
Cashed Birchdale out in running for stake back. I do get that was probably a bit on the short side for him, but he just wasn't fluent enough for me.
 
Nice from Angels Breath.

Birchdale looked like a boat there - never comfortable.
 
Angels breath looked good over fences, hopefully this could be the making of him given the usual hype from hendo last season. Do we think a strong run Arkle would suit as I’m not sure how well he would stay in a jlt? Only 2f more than today’s trip but surely Arkle has to be a consideration as well.
 
Agree very impressive from Angels Breath against a race fit First Flow. Birchdale very disappointing looked very very slow.
 
Way too slow to take any of the 33/1 available during the race :(

14s now, fair enough price... did look decent.

Not backing him at the moment though.
 
typical geraghty education ride that, like defi du seuil last season.
Not sure why he does it but he does, and the betting kind of suggested he wasn't going to try and win.

If you compare his approach to the fence vs the jockey on First Flow then it's like chalk and cheese.

angels breath did it quite naturally on the whole.

JLT for me. He outstayed First Flow for me. Showed bags of stamina in his locker at the end. However it didn’t look like he was hacking around. He looked to my eye to be working fairly hard to stay in touch. A slightly slower gallop over slightly further and I think he pulls away even further. Arkle will be too furious a gallop for him, IMO.
 
JLT for me. Owners have Al Dancer for the Arkle and I know they don't mind running against each other, but the PTP background and the fact he looked a lot more settled than last season, I think the JLT trip is well within his grasp.
 
I don’t think it was a case of Birchdale being slow it’s just he didn’t attack his fences. He was constantly putting in a short stride before the fence and Geraghty was very cautious on him. Angel’s Breath looked much more natural. Who knows on the distance but I would have thought JLT.
 
What do we gauge from Birchdale ?
Henderson has a habit of really overhyping his horses and has been the case since Birchdales intro last season..
I’m struggling to keep onside..
True he has some very good ones , but they can’t all be superstars like he suggests

Depends on the price.

If he's priced like he's got better form that he has, he's one I'd leave alone.

If he gets completely dismissed, and is a wild price, then he becomes interesting.


Unlikely to be the latter...

Birchdale is rated 146. Novice Handicap is 145. Join the dots.

Interesting he mentioned that race at ascot before xmas.
He's not had a runner in it for a few years, especially since they put the distance up from 2m 3f to 2m 5f.
He used to run his novices there a lot. Like Josses Hill & Simonsig.

Not sure 2 furlongs either way, really matters, although I wouldn't be surprised if he's forgot it's a longer race now.

I've said this for a long time with Geraghty, its like he never likes to send them into fences too quick early on, he would rather sit off the back of the horse then be forced to ride them out of the back of the fence. I rate him much better over hurdles than fences. Its not just a dislike to Baz though because I think he does give great rides on chasers (Defi JLT, Defi the other day etc.)

I'm prepared for the slating against Geraghty after this.. :devilish:

Bazza the NH equivalent ( in his head ) to Lester Pigott , thinks on too many occasions that all he has to do is press the button and before anyone starts stating his race record just look at the horse he has had the privilege to have ridden !
