Equine Flu Outbreak

Rebecca Menzies admits to having 3 sick horses in isolation at her yard. I'm beginning to think The Festival is sunk.

You and your 9/2 can dance for joy then :p

Strangest thing to bet on that I've seen, and I've seen bets on worm charming.

Feels like the equivilant of backing a horse to fall.

It's gone massively overboard.
A few vaccinated horses have the flu. They're being kept away from others to not spread it, as it's of danger to foals and young horses that naturally have a less developed immune system.

Theres nothing more to it than that.

It's literally the flu. And there all vaccinated.
It's not a rare disease or the like.

Just a few thoughts ... I know the yards are on "Lockdown" , But does that mean that horses are confined to Boxes ,
or are they still ridden out every day ??. My take on it , at the moment , 6 horses
out of 100 plus yards ... I am definitely confident Cheltenham goes ahead.

They are not confined to boxes. Might Bite will do his first piece of work tomorrow

Good to hear that Kevwando ... probably make thing's worse if they were ??.

TNigel Twiston-Davies believes the rigorous measures put in place by the BHA to contain equine influenza are "a massive overreaction".

The Grand National- and Gold Cup-winning trainer, who had a runner at Ludlow on Wednesday and so is among those who has had to have all his horses tested, described the BHA mandate as "a total knee-jerk reaction" and suggested the authority may find it has "opened a can of worms".

He said: "It's a massive overreaction. All horses are vaccinated, and so when they do get it, it's not really anything to worry about. They get sick, but not that sick – just a snotty nose and temperature.

"I should think every trainer in the country has a horse with a snotty nose, and what you do is take blood tests, take tracheal washes and take their temperature, and if they're clear they're all right.

"Flu is endemic in the whole horse population and what I think the BHA will find is that they've opened a can of worms and that every trainer has two or three.

"We all have bugs and treat them as they come. It's rife everywhere, but not fatal. It's not like herpes or strangles, which are a disaster. This is far from a disaster because we're all vaccinated. It's a total knee-jerk reaction."

The more I research Equine influenza, the more I actually agree with this.

When the news first broke and the headlines were "100 yards on lockdown", as someone who was not familiar with Equine influenza this genuinely led me to believe that this virus was the SARS equivalent for horses. However, Equine influenza seems to be more like a common cold/flu amongst horses (literally sniffles & coughing).

Now, I am all for the well-being of horses, but from what I'm reading, for a horse to potentially die from Equine influenza, it would effectively have to be untreated, non-vaccinated, away from humans and more than likely catch pneumonia before the virus can actually become life threatening to the horse, which isn't going to happen here...

It would be a bloody disappointment if Cheltenham was cancelled over this. Although, it would be more so ridiculous as I'm just comparing it to a situation like where my office would go into lockdown if someone caught a cold and was sneezing on the floor :highly_amused:

Kev seems to think this is a very strange thing to bet on :)

It is!

FM setting a bad example :devilish:

To elabroate a bit, or press it at least... it's just a bad bet isn't it?

You can't be in possession of the facts, and it's not a situation where you can have any edge whatsoever, and I'd hope you can find better 7/2 or 9/2 shots every day if you're interested in the sport?... the irony being there is no racing to bet on :p

The 4 pts lost is just giving your money away, and the "win" wouldn't do enough to numb the week anyway at those odds, 10 or 14 pts back.

I thought about having a lot on.

Most of us have spent months trying to have an edge to make a few quid on the festival by backing horses ante post. If the festival is cancelled I'd get all my money back, having wasted around 15-20 hours a week.

It's no worse than having 4 pts on any other 7/2 loser imo

Wasted?

There's our sticking point then.

I'd be gutted, but I've enjoyed every bit. 14 pts isn't going to make up for 15-20 hours a week?

Nige obviously thinks he knows more than the top brass.

They're damned if they do and damned if they don't.

It'll be wasted if there's no Cheltenham festival at the end of it. I'm sure we've all got things we could be doing than talking about horses and races that are never actually ran.

14pts isn't going to make up for it, no, but you hedge your bets all the time and this is no different in my opinion.

I've staked around 200 points and i wouldn't sell my bets for 400 points. A few points on racing not to take place in February is just insuring against those bets. Nothing else.

A no brainer for me.

It looks like a good bet to me at this stage:devilish:

Well it's not, you're on at 7/2 and it's 9/2 :p

Not going to read through the whole post,so sorry if I have missed something, but even if the festival was called off, wouldn't it just be delayed until a later date.?. I remember back in good old foot and mouth that the festival was going to be run mid/end April, but they had another case within the five me radius. Just a thought!

Not sure, post #150 though :encouragement:

It must have been smashed up:devilish:

2/1 for the festival to take place on 12th march is the best I can find, that makes my 7/2 no racing in Feb a good bet, at the moment, in my mind.

We ain't going to agree on this. :)

Haha, it'll have been smashed up by the same people who want a price on Ruby to fall at the last, or the number of finishers in a National.

No place for immoral bets - plenty of things to bet on outside of negativity.

Elvis to still be alive 500/1.

Apologies though, Ribocco - I shouldn't be knocking anyones bet, especially as you explained the reasons.

and to you FM, although I know you won't have taken it the wrong way :encouragement:

Not even had a drink tonight! :highly_amused:
