Cheltenham Gold Cup 2020

Looking at are we in for a single figure lineup this year?

Al Boum Photo
Santini
Delta Work
Lostintranslation
Clan Des Obeaux
Kemboy
Presenting Percy
Monalee
Bristol De Mai
Elegent Escape.

Unless I'm missing someone the only other one I can possibly see is Chris's Dream but HDB said he's probably off to Aintree. That's 10 with still a month to go, 9 is the smallest lineup i can remember in 2016

Quality over quantity

I never actually properly worked that out, no disrespect to any of the other horses, is there nobody else even borderline to enter?

I think the 10 listed, somebody could make a case for any of them. Definitely a very open Gold Cup.

Nobody's Fault except Mine , But was tempted by the 25-1 for Clan des Obeaux.
Just around christmas time , and hesitated too long. then went too short for me.
8-1 now ??.

That will be very disappointing if Chris’s Dreams bypasses the Festival for Aintree, I had him in the Gold Cup and Ryanair at 66/1, I thought it was my hidden pot of gold!!! Damn those pesky trainers!!

Im sure Jessica Harriginton said Jett will be GC bound too after its decent performance in the Irish GC

Personally, can’t touch Kemboy for a few reasons
His Cheltenham form is suspect even allowing for the fall last year
Ground dependent
Jumping not fluent this year
Can’t even see him reversing the form with Delta Work

Deja vu but put less aggressively than by some in the past so worthy of a balanced response.

Cheltenham form - 5th in the Neptune, 4th in the JLT. Last year's fall absolutely not his fault (thank you Percy) and maybe worth noting that Al Boum Photo fell in his previous Cheltenham run prior to success last year. He's won left-handed, right-handed, flat track, undulating track so it's case not proven about whether or not he has a problem with the course.

Ground dependent - 8 wins under rules on Yielding, Heavy, Heavy, Soft, Good, Good, Good to Soft, Yielding to Soft.

Jumping not fluent this year - agreed but he was not allowed to do his own thing (cf Aintree and Punchestown under Ruby) and every horse needs a rhythm.

Can't even see him reversing the form with Delta Work - that's subjective, of course, and reflected in their respective prices so everyone can make their own choice. Arguably, the distance between the pair at the DRF was a reflection of the respective rounds of jumping and was in any case less than half the gap in the Savills. I couldn't with any confidence say that he'll beat Delta Work next time but I am surprised that he's available at 9/1.

Of all the horses in the Gold Cup I think Kemboy is overpriced at 9/1, big overreaction to his defeat to Delta Work in my book...

Mullins said he'd be delighted with top 4 finish with Kemboy and he has it all to do. I think he's right.

Joe Tizzard “Maybe Haydock left more of a mark on him (LIT) than we thought. Went to Larkhill last week and galloped 2m and had a good blow after so glad we did”

what exactly is Tizzard saying by that? That he's blown up after a 2m gallop? Surely not a good sign

Usually means it was needed. Better to find out in a piece of work than come race day. Generally should strip fitter for the experience... blah blah

Frodon is still entered in case he decides against Ryanair

I was more or less under the impression that PN more or less ruled out the GC after Haydock for Frodon

Don't think I've ever been so torn on a race. Was heavily invested last year in CDO and I'll be so sick if he wins this year with nothing on him. Backed Presenting Percy pre-Dublin Racing Festival NRNB as assumed he wouldn't go if didn't run well so got the worst of both worlds.

Managed this terrible so far! Any fans of LIT? I cannot get my head around his price. Would be the only one from front 5 in betting that I would completely scratch from shortlist....

....Nicholls believes Clan Des Obeaux is his best chance of the week;

https://www.sportinglife.com/racing/news/paul-nicholls-festival-file/177763

The fact the Gold Cup is sponsered by Magners and the headline is:

Paul Nicholls rates Clan des Obeaux his best chance at The Festival presented by Magners

Makes me a little dubious as to whether he truely believes that :highly_amused:

I love Nicholls though. So much better than Henderson at everything from training racehorses, to being a human.

I can't see how you could scratch LIT from the shortlist.

This race is very tough though, I can't scratch any out, I've just got 3 and I'll stick with them! (Santini, Percy, Delta Work)
