2025 Stayers Hurdle

My first official defeat of the season. Gale Mahler will follow. Only backed him a couple of days ago too for the taggy E/W money. Pure hard earned sterling too, no roll up which i have been doing a bit of recently. An almost certainty to go to the stayers with an eye on protecting his Grand National mark. I would retire him now if he was mine and let him enjoy his life in the field. Owes the owners absolutely nothing.

Willie mooting Vauban for this on RTV just now.

I was Vauban's biggest fan when he appeared on the scene but i have dropped him now. He just does not like a big field and being harassed. he is one for me that likes a nice steady pace to aim at and saves everything for the end. He won't get that in a Stayers. Something will go bombing off. He isn't one for me. Not even for place money. I think they are trying to re-invent the wheel with this lad now. He has been on the go all year and now they don't know what to do with him. He is a 2 mile hurdler and should have stayed there.

Now he could be a huge threat to Teahupoo. Never saw that coming. Will he stay though ?

I wondered how long it would take for you to start throwing money at your #1 cliff horse..........LOL.

I'd be opposing Vauban in the stayers. Should just leave him on the flat trying to win the group races between 1m6 and 2m.

Hold off anybody thinking of wasting their money on Vauban for this. Looks like he’s sold to Australia.

Very likely to stay down there , huge money involved.
Bringing a horse like that back over hurdles for an owner makes zero sense in my mind for peanuts.

Is due to fly to Ireland tomorrow, so we'll know soon enough...

A seven-year-old to Australian time, Vauban was to have returned to Ireland on Wednesday to aim up at a hurdling campaign into next March’s Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham for jumps master Mullins, but he will instead be sent for a summer spell in NSW before joining the Waterhouse-Bott stable over summer.

Jeez!

That's an incredible sum!

It is Aus $ so equates to just over a million sterling.
Bear in mind there are plenty of million dollar plus races in Aus, what are his options here ? 80 grand for a Royal Ascot handicap ?
Good business for both I think...

Great business for Rich to re-invest in stock, there was no point bringing him over hurdles
Vauban I have no doubt will make that back fairly quickly. So many Group races with huge prize money on offer down there and there quality of horse isn't great ath those distances. Only have to look at some of ours which have gone done and dominated from being average enough horses or similar to him here

I don't know enough about the Australian racing game to know what prize money is put so fair enough on that side of things.

Agree, no point him coming back over to win £80k races when such a figure is offered for him.

I'm over the moon to have seen Lucky place declared for the Ascot hurdle on Saturday.
He's had a chase entry and Nicky Henderson gave mixed messages in his stable tours about this fella so it's pleasing to see he's staying hurdling.

I like to try and identify novices from the previous season that stay hurdling and have the potential to make up in to grade 1 class over staying distances, it's a little less obvious than a champion hurdler coming through from the novices, and it can become a good puzzle to crack. Last season I identified crambo as the 'one' I believed had the potential to become a grade 1 winner over 3 miles, he duly obliged, although was disappointing in the stayers hurdle and went In to that category of 'value loser'.

This season I think the 'one' could be lucky place.
His novice form is pretty damn good, he meets golden ace on Saturday, 10lbs better off for a 3/4length defeat the only time they have met, the price difference between the 2 for Saturday is something I've taken full advantage of.
His coral cup run for a novice was fantastic, looked to be closest at the finish, travelled beautifully throughout his races last season and looks an ideal type to relish 3 miles. Related to a midlands national winner on the dam side, i think stamina could be a real asset to this horse.

I got him added a few weeks ago, 33/1 was a bit of a shock, I was hoping for much bigger.
Hopefully a wtaf price can be around for saturday.
Buzz won the Ascot hurdle a few years ago, Henderson made comments afterwards about looking to go down the stayers route, he went pretty short afterwards, im hoping for the same saturday with lucky place.

I cant really work out why Bob Olinger got pushed out by PP to 66/1 following his run last week.

Home By The Lee is a solid yardstick and was only beaten 6l in this race last year. Considering BO was giving him 5lbs at the weekend, I thought, whilst it was mildly disappointing he couldn't win, it was also a very respectable seasonal debut.

There are an awful lot of horses above him in the betting who won't be running in this, and whilst it does have the whiff of a value loser, I think its completely the wrong price.

Will be watching this one closely on Saturday, thanks for flagging up.
what do you think about Gordon sending The Wallpark down the stayers route, or 152 not much to find to trouble the front few there, long walk nxt for him.

I thought that myself, especially when they cut Home by the Lee down to 16/1 for winning, four times his price doesn't make a lot of sense.

I do think it's a value loser though, as when he came under pressure he once again looked terrible, wandering about with his head in the air looking like he hated the whip. I think he would need the race to fall apart in front of him probably, and just come with one run and not have to fight for it, which i suppose could happen as its not the strongest of divisions.
