Mares Hurdle 2020

More than likely H.P , the way she ran last time out .

Already had one fortuitous victory too much to ask for another surely? :)
Ifs n But’s
Pots n pans :)

Taken a turn down the ranking for the Mares now.
It’s not a race I usually bet on as WPM usually has an odds on shot.
Usually go into the Guinness Village on course for a beer and live music and watch the race on the big screen.

This year I now find myself with three selections.
Honeysuckle 9/2
Epatante 16/1
Roksana 11/1

Will leave alone now but happy if one or more turn up in the race and give me something to watch on the day. :triumphant:

Connections say Honey 95% certain to run in Mares but likely to run in Irish Churdle first.

If she wins the Irish Champion Hurdle in electric fashion what percentages do you think it will be then?

Anyone who's backed for the CH must be delighted with that, atleast your getting your chance.
If shes good enough to win the CH she should be winning the irish version and would therefore make it very hard to turn the big one down, Under what would be immense pressure.

Exactly this for me. If she does what Apple's Jade did last season then that percentage will no doubt change and become much closer. Especially if the CH looks as open then as it does now. If Honeysuckle weren't to run again than for me it would be 100% Mares if they made the call this minute. I think 2m4 is probably her ideal trip. And the owner is a huge advocate for the Mares programme. But if they take in the Irish Champion and win as easily as they did at the weekend, it would be human nature to be drawn towards the CH. And I'd be certain it's then nothing like a 5% chance. And we saw last year 2 instances of horses changing targets in the aftermath of the race despite connections stating post race they'd be sticking with the original plan (Apples from Mares to CH and Supasundae from CH and Stayers)

Red Mills also an alternative for Honey. Now that sounds perrrrrrfect! Think they will go that route and keep her unbeaten record intact.

It's like Deja Vu.

Really pleased that connections have actually said the Champion Hurdle will come into consideration. Rightly so, I think we all expected it, I'm just glad to have read it :highly_amused:

I'd be loads more keen on her to go for the CH because it's just better than a match in this race.

The year people thought VVM vs Limini vs Apple's Jade was better than the CH was embarassing to have to plough through :p

Scrap this race, force them into the proper races :devilish:

Honestly joking.

....but make it a grade 2.:devilish:

Don't bite.

I'd like your thoughts on this please. As Honey is going over fences next season and as the owner is a great advocate of the Mares program she is very likely to target the new Mares chase, does that enhance her chances of going for the Mares race or the Champion Hurdle this season?

Makes no difference.
If she did go for it and win it though (champion hurdle) they'd probably stick to hurdling.
They've already left her for a year as they have Sinoria.
Looks like he has some more for this year also.
They like Minella Melody a lot.

I think it makes a huge difference. They'd upset a few going for Churdle after spending so much time and effort to get decent races/prize money for Mares only races. Trainer pretty adamant she'll go over the big ones next season too. She looks ready for them now. They only kept to hurdles this season because of one race.....the Mares.

Think you should read your original question again.

Yes and thanks for your thoughts but I didn't agree with them.

The 'Fact' that you say she's very likely target the mares chase next year.

does that enhance her chances of going for the Mares race or the Champion Hurdle this season?

Makes no difference, means whatever the target next season. It Doesn't alter the odds of which race she goes for this season.

If it's 95% vs 5%.
It'd be the same irrespective of next seasons target.
Therefore it makes no difference.

The other things you've mentioned do and already have an influence, as they have clearly had the mares hurdle in mind all along.

Gotcha. Sorry wires crossed.

So who wins the 2021 Mares Chase?

Laurina or Honeysuckle?

Sunday's runaway Hatton's Grace winner Honeysuckle could clash with Klassical Dream in the BHP Insurance Irish Champion Hurdle, as connections eye up one more run before the Cheltenham Festival, writes Stuart Riley.

In the wake of her nine-length victory over Bacardys, with ten-time Grade 1 winner Apple's Jade back in third, connections would not rule out a possible crack at the Unibet Champion Hurdle come March, but stressed they were still keen to stick to the original plan and were "95 per cent" sure to target the David Nicholson Mares' Hurdle.

The unbeaten five-year-old holds Grade 1 entries at Leopardstown in the Matheson Hurdle over two miles and the Christmas Hurdle over three, but will now be given a short break.

Upon her return in the new year, she could be dropped back in trip with the tantalising possibility of a clash with a host of the best two-mile hurdlers around at the Dublin Racing Festival at the beginning of February. Gowran Park's Red Mills Hurdle two weeks later is the other potential stepping stone.

Peter Molony, who purchased the unbeaten €110,000 mare after her point-to-point win and acts as racing manager to her owner Kenny Alexander, said: "The original plan was always the Mares' Hurdle at Cheltenham and we've worked back from there.

"The plan was two runs before Christmas, then a little break, then a prep run before Cheltenham and we're still probably looking at that.

"She's in the two- and three-mile Grade 1s at Leopardstown over Christmas but is unlikely to go there. We'll probably stick to the original plan and go for something like the Irish Champion at Leopardstown, or the Red Mills at Gowran, and then straight to Cheltenham.

"It's yet to be finalised, we will sit down again in the next few days, but that's been the original plan and I don't think we'll deviate."

Victory in the Irish Champion Hurdle would increase the temptation to go down the championship route, but Molony explained: "She'll be entered in both [the Champion Hurdle and Mares' Hurdle] and we'll keep our options open, but I don't want anyone to be under any illusions. We're huge fans of the mares' programme, we've been trying to encourage it for years, it's there now and this has been the plan forever for her.

"I'd say it's 95 per cent she'll go for the Mares' Hurdle, obviously there's a little idea in the background saying 'what about the Champion Hurdle?' so that's the five per cent, but I'd be virtually positive she'll go for the Mares'.

"Kenny's whole idea is to build a nice breeding operation tilted towards racemares and broodmares, which is why he'd love to win the Mares' Hurdle.

"Any race at Cheltenham is tough and a lot of things have to go right between now and then. The Mares' is certainly not going to be an easy race but that's where we're likely going at this stage."

Nice to have the added security of the owners love of Mares and Mares races in their decision where she ends up. I do think they will also go Red Mills. No point in giving her a hard race in the Irish Churdle if they are virtually positive she will run in Mares. There is going to be lots of nail biting going on in the Lobos camp over the next 10 weeks. Just hope she gets there fit and well this season. Everything crossed.
