Kauto Star Novices Chase 2020

The Kauto Star ( previously Feltham) Novices’ Chase and the Christmas Hurdle are the the main supporting races to the King George VI Chase on the Kempton Boxing Day racecard. The Feltham Chase is a Grade 1 novice event run over the same 3 mile course as the King George itself.

As the Feltham attracts the top novice staying chasers it might be expected that the winners would also be types to go on and win the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. In fact the opposite has been true. Grands Crus in 2011 became the 18th winner of the Feltham Chase at Kempton not to follow up in the RSA Chase. Seven beaten horses reversed the places at Cheltenham, Might Bite and Bobs Worth becoming the latest to show that Cheltenham offers a very different challenge to Kempton.

Long Run did follow up a 2009 Feltham win with victory in the 2010 King George ( run in Jan 2011) and the 2011 Cheltenham Gold Cup while Coneygree used it a a prep on the way to Gold Cup success.
