Here’s what Paul said last night re Pic D’Orhy word for word:
He’s an interesting horse in (starts reading what he has prepared) that he won 3 times in Auteuil in the summer and autumn, he’s got a French handicap rating of mark equivalent in this country of 149 so if I ran him in the Fred Winter he’d have to run off 149. So 149 is actually 3lb higher than Quel Destin, so that shows the sort of level he’s been running to. He’s an absolutely gorgeous horse for the future, big strong chaser, loves soft ground, he’s done nothing wrong, he galloped very very well at Wincanton about 3 weeks ago, um, and I’ve run horses twice before, Aux Ptit Soins won on his first run in this country, won the coral cup, and Diego Du Charmil won the Fred Winter on his first start so it’s possible. He’s done everything right at home, if it keeps on raining I’d say he’d run and he’s a very interesting one and it will be real interesting choice for Harry to decide between Quel Destin and Pic D’Orhy that’s for sure. He is a proper horse.
How can the Pic D’Orhy backers not be buzzing at that. He made the point about some of his French ones winning having had their debut at Cheltenham, he was thrilled about what Pic did at Wincanton, Harry Derham is name dropping Pic like he’s met someone famous, Paul is pleased with everything he is doing at home, he is rated better than Quel Destin and he talks about the choice Harry is going to have to make on who he rides like it’s a serious decision. The heavens are due to open today, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday if the forecast is to be believed. On top of the rain we have had that will leave the ground more likely soft than good to soft, so it will be right up his street. As I have said in previous posts, he wasn’t included in the ‘I am going to show you 12 I am taking to Cheltenham’ for a laugh, he is going because Paul thinks he has a serious chance on winning. Up the Pic
