Noel Fehily feels Black Op needs “more work” on his fencing technique if he is to fulfil his potential as a chaser.
Tom George’s charge was a Grade One winner as a novice over hurdler at Aintree, having finished second to Samcro at Cheltenham, but he has been beaten on his first two outings over fences.
While the consensus was he needed the run in a hot race at Exeter on his debut, his jumping left a lot to be desired when third in the Dipper Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day.
“He’s had a couple of sessions with Yogi Breisner (jumping guru) and could probably do with one or two more,” Fehily told Sky Sports Racing.
“He just needs practice, and he needs to learn to respect his fences – at the moment he’s getting in too deep. He’s getting himself into trouble, and then it’s too late to get himself out of trouble.
“It’s just experience – he needs to learn, he needs more work. He might get the hang of it eventually.”
When asked if a step up to three miles might suit, Fehily said: “I’m sure going half a stride slower might help eventually, but he needs to learn to respect fences himself.
“I tried everything the other day. I tried letting him loose to see what he’d do, but he just wasn’t respecting them and running in too deep.”

Ended up in the stayers last year
 
He was hardly the best hurdler either, but going a stride slower in the Stayers could definitely help. Worth a punt at the prices.

The other one I'm adding at the same price is Next Destination NRNB, who I would prefer. Time is against him now to get some proper experience in. If he debuts at the DRF and makes some novicey errors and doesn't win, I can easily see him being switched/saving status for next year.

Mullins, Punchestown Festival
I couldn't see Next Destination winning at any stage until he got his head in front, and when Delta Work came up behind it seemed to spur our fellow on. He could easily go chasing next season but I'll have to discuss that with Mr Denmark. He'll probably start off chasing and if it doesn't work out he can go back hurdling. He could be a top class hurdler in the staying division - Willie Mullins, trainer
 
Interesting that lots of the novices we hear "they have schooled really well at home" yet they hit the course and are all over the place. I am thinking of DDS, Black Op and OTBS. I know DDS has done ok but never going to be clean.
Why do the trainers even bother saying it as it clear it is untrue.

Providing a horse is fit and well there's not a huge amount more a trainer can add to that. A trainer is rarely going to say that a horse has schooled badly as it will reflect poorly on them in the eyes of connections. Lots of horses will school well and then fall to pieces when they hit the course, as they will often face variables you get when racing that they don't face when being schooled. That might be the speed they take their obstacles, the number of other horses in the race or even something like the shape of the fence/hurdle. For these reasons (and many many more) "they have schooled really well at home" holds about as much weight with me as "he has four legs and can run"

Would disagree about DDS. OTBS was having his first chase start in a pretty hot race, unsure what else you'd expect? Bound to be taken off his feet going that gallop. Black Op has zero respect for hurdles or fences and thinks he is a bulldozer, not really sure trainer can do an awful amount with him, as he's been sent to one of the best in the game (Yogi Breisner) and if he can't sort him out then I'm not sure many others can.
 
Both DDS and OTBS were placed in hot races first time up and both performed like they were seeing fences for the first time.
It may just be the character of the horse, and these two may be a little more wary than some. Over time they may adapt nicely, as DDS seems to be improving his fencing.
Whilst some horses are just mad and have no sense of danger whatsoever.
 
I'm a huge Cracking Smart fan and find it interesting he got his Stayers entry this week. I was thoroughly disappointed with his comeback and expected more sparkle, but as someone rightly mentioned, Gordon has clearly left plenty of work on.

I've just had to take my time with Cracking Smart since he came back in from the summer and he was never going to run much before Christmas so the decision was made to keep him hurdling for this season. He was a very good staying novice hurdler last season and it was a pity that he had to miss Cheltenham with a late setback as I thought he would have gone very well in the Albert Bartlett. This is going to be a tough enough starting point for his season as he is taking on some quality stayers and he is going to need this run too so whatever he does here he will improve on dramatically

If you look at the shape of the market, and with AJ off to Mares and Delta clear RSA hope, I wouldn't be surprised if CS is clear Stayers pick for Gordon come Cheltenham.

I also believe that with Next Destination out for the season, we'll be getting juicer prices about CS as his strong form last year will no longer be as widely advertised!!!

Needless to say I've jumped on the 40/1 with Bet365. Only Penhill to beat then ;)
 
Welcome to "The" Forum , jugofpunch. Whether we will see him , i don't know . But on the Betfair stable tour
with G.Elliott , P nicholls etc , G.E mentioned Pallasator , and said he could end up
in the Stayers Hurdle too.

Pallasator has had a few chase entries.

G.E say's. Only been with us for last year...Already a Firm Favourite... Isn't in love with deep ground.
Won at Ascot & grade 2 hurdles... Wouldn't be shocked if he made it to chelt....
Stayers Hurdle ... More to come ... Not surprised if Grade 1 level.

That was a while back. He's said 4 miler since and has had chase entries lately.
