RSA Chase 2019

Strange, I have Delta Work down as a proper stayer who could easily end up in the 4 miler, I assume this 2m 3f race is a weak event and will just blow the cobwebs away, I certainly don't see his future over an intermediate trip

I think most novices will make their debuts over shorter distances in weaker fields before moving up in distance and grade as the season progresses.

You also have to factor in the racing calendar and what’s available at the time

Of course JM, completely get that, I can't remember if it was archie or Bay of Freedom who highlighted the complexities of the Irish calendar and how certain horses have extremely limited options....

Most RSA winners in recent years have started over fences between 2m3f-6f before being tested over further

Last couple of winners though in this race, A Toi Phil and Tombstone, certainly didn't want 3m.

Perhaps Delta Work is showing more speed at home than he has on the track... could forgive him on debut when 3rd behind Early Doors for not being at his peak, next run over 20f he was behind Samcro, not beaten far at 3m behind Fabulous Saga and Total Recall and won the Pertemps over 3m doesn't suggest to me he's goping to be as effective over shorter though

Elliott has such an array of novice chasers who will likely go further that I wouldn't read too much if anything into the trip for Delta Works (or others) first run. Although in my eyes the further he goes the better - i'd say he's more flexible than some of his stablemates in regards to trip so can get away with the conditions of Fridays race when others may not have.

A Toi Phil and Apache Stronghold are 2 of the winners of the race in recent years and they both went on to run over 3 miles that same season.

Add in the fact that he had 5 runs before Cheltenham last season (and 7 in total for a 5 year old) connections may just want to get him out early as he appears a horse who gets better the more he races.

Everything about him says he will come into his own as a three mile Staying chaser. And hopefully he's going to make up into
a Classy Staying Novice. He takes his racing well , so we'll keep him on the go throughout the winter,But his form
would suggest that he will really comeinto his own when we get some decent spring ground

........... at the Spring festivals . that's what gordon Elliot said about Delta work !.

See I don’t buy that I saw him very early last year as a handicap plot for Elliott I don’t think he was trying to win races outside of Cheltenham and Punchestown. I think he might be their most talented 3 miler this year that being said I wouldn’t be surprised to see him win the festival trophy off like 151 next year.

I took the view that they had given the horse 3 early runs in graded races, got a handicap mark of 136. His 4th run was off that mark in a 16 runner handicap at the Dublin Festival yet they still decided to run him again in another handicap 17 days later. Plenty of racing for a 5 year old.

Though it may well of been them wanting to guarantee he'd get into the Pertemps as the cut off was 135 so at the time it would have been tight (they missed out on Glenloe getting a run the year before) as that extra run got him into the race off 139. Plus the Elliott and Mullins title battle has meant some horses have are likely to run more than they would have otherwise.

I think the Punchestown run maybe surprised connections though and got them to realise he is better than a handicapper. I very much expect him to be involved in a graded chase at the festival in March (but have backed him any race myself)

Any reason for that charlie?

I thought he lost little in defeat at Cheltenham and Aintree, certainly not to warrant a price 5 times that of Santini. 3 miles over fences will suit so I imagine this will be their long term plan, looking forward to seeing him in action.

I have also backed Tower bridge , but for the Nat. hunt chs. ??.

The only one on my shortlist for this outright. If he can jump he looks tailor made for the 4 miler. But I can't back one in the race this early.

Just took 28/1 any race, on

With the 4 miler in mind. Has plenty of top grade hurdles experiance and some classy back form with the likes of monalee.

I don't always take the stable tours as gospel but this was from the Joseph O'Brien stable tour on ATR:

"He will go novice chasing this season. He won a Grade 1 novice hurdle and is a big horse that jumps fences well at home, so we are looking forward to him. Two-and-a-half miles to three miles will be his range."

Mine is a small speculative bet , a while ago , Just a feeling that joseph O'brien will be a trainer to follow at some time
in the future.

Fully agree and now that Gigginstown are sending him horses he’ll have even more ammunition.

A lovely horse but seems very ground dependent. I really hoped to see him chasing last season but they kept him hurdling and it ended up just being a bit of a washout and I hope that hasn’t set him back. I can’t help but feel he’ll be a really nice grade 2/3/high class handicapper for T George, probably enjoying the flat tracks on decent ground, in the mould of Double Shuffle.
