Queen Mother Champion Chase 2020

I’ve had a discussion with the Pughs regarding #Altior and he will be entered in the G2 @UnibetRacing Silviniaco Conti Chase over 2m4f @kemptonparkrace on Saturday with the intention very much to run. @NdeBoinville was happy with his work yesterday and he’ll school in the week.

Henderson on Altior

@Sevenbarrows: Altior will not run @kemptonparkrace on Saturday. Full details in my @UnibetRacing blog shortly.

UNFORTUNATELY,*Altior will now not take his chance in the Unibet Silviniaco Conti Chase at Kempton at the weekend because we do not feel he looks his absolute best and despite working well on Saturday he is still not 100% compared to previous years and he could still be feeling the side effects of the antibiotics he was given to treat the abscess on his wither.

Altior owes us nothing at all so our one and only priority is his wellbeing so it would be unkind to run him if he isn’t at his brilliant best. I would like to add that his blood test yesterday was perfect and he is very well within himself but this is a case of instinct, and our instinct tells us that he just doesn’t look as good as he can do. He will be given 10 days on the ‘easy list’ and spend some time on the water treadmill. We’ll throw everything at him to get him right so we’ll tuck him up and give him the very best.

He’s fit so it’s just a case of ticking him over. The plan is for him run in the Game Spirit at Newbury and he will be given one entry at Cheltenham which will be in the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Cheers King.

Wet as usual from old Nicky soppy pants.
Bookies not best please with him either.

No showdown with DDS at Ascot either.

Great news. Looks like he will now get the perfect prep for the Champion Chase.

Hopefully they have also added some weight to his work rider as I would have thought carrying 2-3 stone less could have a significant effect on his fitness. Would seem logical if it was a human so can’t see why it wouldn’t be for a horse.

His 'brilliant best' was nearly 2 years ago. If they won't run him until he's back to that, they won't run him again.

I thought after the loss to Cyrname the pressure would be offand they'd have a go with Altior but it seems to have had the opposite effect and they dare not run him. Like you say Archie he hasn't been his brilliant best for a while now.

In 'rude health' on Saturday and fully intending to run. Now this. Ridiculous

He also said he was due to do some schooling this week.
Wouldn't surprise if this was when Nicky changed tack.
But I'm not one for speculating :highly_amused:

I guess his next race will be his final one so can understand them letting it be in champ chase. Ultimately will be pulled up but at least he will get a good send off from the crowd.

Queen Mother and the Celebration Chase in April and then retirement?

I think this will be the route and end game for Altior. I think he will win the QMCC, I hope Henderson enters a pace maker for Altior to track and Nico presses the button earlier and lets Altior run the rest into submission

It would be the path they took with Sprinter, he turned 10 the day he last ran, Altior would just be a couple of weeks shy of 10 himself on that day. I guess it depends how he runs at Cheltenham, he could have a day like Sprinter or a day like Kauto.

I think all this faffing around is a smoke screen. They know he’s ready and he can run further than 2 mile after the Cyrname race so I think they are going to let him go earlier with the plan of having a lead that he doesn’t get caught.

I'm delighted that he's only getting one entry.

Been adament he'd not go Ryanair and secretly been really worried about being wrong :highly_amused:

I've got 3 pts on at 15.5/1 from the double with Cyrname (not after timing as I posted it beforehand for any stray dogs reading) but I can't say I'm overjoyed at his prospects.

The closer we get to the race, the more I reckon I'll end up thinking he's just not the force of old and Archie's right about him (that he's been below/on the decline for 2 seasons).

I want that not to be the case, and I want that run behind Cyrname to still be top class, but it's just not is it? He's just not as good as I thought he was :(

3/1f now and any shorter he gets is surely just people wanting to be part of history, rather than anyone thinking about making proper money?

He could be third fav after DDS and CPS win their next races.
