Novice Hurdlers 2027

Hendo on Feel Gut. Make of this what you will

“Although he has won a race, the concept of those National Hunt Junior Hurdle contests, means he is a novice for this campaign. He has experience under his belt, and no penalty for that win, so it puts him in a really good place. I think he is a Lulamba-type of horse.

“He could do certain things over two miles, but I don’t think that will take him to where he will finish up. He is big, tall and leggy. He just got held up a little bit as the vaccinations upset him, but I’m in no rush with him. He is a lovely horse."

Down Jones Road and Mourne Crystal been very popular talking horses this year. Word of caution though. Only one of the last 11 winners of the Supreme went from P2P to Hurdles and that was arguably the best of them all, Constitution Hill.
Constitution Hill also skipped bumpers, just like DJR is going to do, just saying, of course!

Not expecting DJR to be the next Con Hill!

Does this bit say he'll be better over further than 2m or just that he'll be better as he gets older?

Just sounds to me like they don't think he will be a Champion Hurdle horse.

It strongly suggests they think he'll be better over further. He's been an awful price for the Supreme for a while and not one I'm involved in but quite a few Supreme winners end up better over further don't they. Not so much recently mind.

It’s an interesting stat - any thoughts as to why P2P horses don’t tend to win the Supreme? Could it be that they need further and are running in the wrong race?

Momentum Of Love and Rare Et Precieux clipped in by Hills.

Rare Et Precieux has been on the move for about a week. He was 33s at some point in the last fortnight. Now into 16s with Hills. 20s best elsewhere

They do win Supremes mate. Shishkin, Constitution Hill and Appreciate It all in recent seasons.

I think he maybe meant straight over hurdles as opposed to the bumper route first but rest assured p2p horses do win Supremes.

Thanks COD you are so right as I have now done my own research and yes it’s 4/11. They are the 3 you mention plus Slade Steel who did go on to race in bumpers as did Appreciate It and Shishkin! Interestingly the 11 include that monkey if a horse Labaik who came from the flat with quirks! Before he was introduced to NH rules they had him out in the Hunting fields arguably even more testing than P2Ps!

Yes, was referring to horses going straight from P2P to Hurdles. For me there are a couple of things. Firstly it is going from being trained and racing over 3m to then dropping back to 2m. I'm sure it is also a different training sphere from P2P to a NH yard. The biggest factor for me though, which is the case for the majority of novice races at Cheltenham, is experience. Not just of racing, but doing so at a good level as well as the extra experience of being in a training yard, preparing for 2m. Even if it is just one of two bumper runs, that experience and being in a yard is just so beneficial to runners in the Supreme.

….Bass Hunter won on hurdles debut yesterday, 33-1 Supreme;

‘That is a huge relief as I was making up all sorts of reasons why he wouldn’t win beforehand,” said a delighted Gordon. “He conducted himself beautifully in the paddock and while he jumped a little bit out to his right I was pleased with his jumping.

“In the bumpers last year he was always lugging to the left so he was comfortable around Newbury and Cheltenham but if you look at his Irish point-to-points he jumped off to his right. But I would say it was minimal and we will do plenty with him between now and his next run and hopefully he will learn plenty.

“I came down here because I think a novice learns an awful lot around here. It’s tight, the hurdles come to you pretty quickly and you are going up and down the hill. Now we will look for another little novice somewhere along the line then we will be stepping up (in class).”

Gordon mentioned both Haydock and Aintree as possible venues for a step into Graded company with the Newton Novices’ Hurdle (previously the Rossington Main) on November 21 at the former and the Grade One Formby Novices’ Hurdle also on his radar.

“It wouldn’t be the end of the world if he came back down here (Plumpton) for his next run before then but we will see what is around when he is ready,” said Gordon. “We will give him three or four weeks and then see what is around.”

Yeah, they see him as a horse that will be better over further than 2m, just a case of when I guess?
A Lulamba type certainly suggests that, as he says he’s not a 2 miler now.
No doubt to me he will start over 2m as a few of his will, then they will get sorted as the season progresses I would think.
