Marsh Novices Chase 2020 (was JLT)

So Laurina and Faugheen novice chasing.

Faugheen being 11 is quite a different move, and a reasonably new experiment!

I don't even think i can find him in the betting- even on last years hurdle form as long as he jumps he's in the reckoning surely.

No he isn't..

Bloody love Faugheen, I just want him to get to the end of his career in one piece and have a fair retirement.

As for going over fences aged 11, it seems a strange one and not one I am keen on tbh.

Mullins if you read fat jockey please retire faugheen , its the right thing to do.

He's a racehorse.

IF he's fit and well, he should be running.

If we retire every horse that does well we'll need a new sport to enjoy :p

I think they're bonkers going Novice Chasing with Faugheen but cannot wait to see it!

Never understand this wanting to retire race horses. As long as they are not in pain, give them the opportunity to do what they enjoy. We know he wont ever get back to his brilliant best but its not the end of the world. Let him have a go at jumping a fence. If people would of got their way then Kauto wouldnt of won the last KG and Sprinter wouldnt of won the last CC. The owner will do right by the horse but whats the rush to retire, never really understood it.

Cross country might suit an old man like Faugheen, he might just enjoy that.
And it'd shake up Tiger a little.
If I was Faugheen and they started asking me to jump bigger fences at this age - I'd tell them to bollocks.

Sometimes enough is enough, they’re not sending him chasing to win a gold cup it’s just a final cash grab. Once you’ve achieved what he has and is showing signs of regression they should be retired. There’s nothing to gain by going chasing at this stage of his career. When he fell last season and looked dead I felt physically sick and would hate to witness that again

Couldnt disagree more, cant see them running him still for cash. Im sure if he runs and doesnt show a spark they will retire him but they are obviously seeing something in him that makes them think he should carry on.

Was/is my favourite horse, but to say the owner is loooking for a final cash grab is mad. He might well be on the decline, but a racehorse likes to race. I'd trust them to know enough about the horse by now.

Ellison apparently adores him. Was thinking he could be one for the Novices Handicap if they campaign him right?

Was at preview evening same thing and someone connected with stable said the same thing......never been more nervous than before his last race....thinks its really special horse

Eventers are just coming into their prime at 11.

Many horses jump fences better than hurdles because they respect them more and make a proper shape when jumping. As long as he is still capable of doing that physically it shouldn't be an issue.

Faugheen made his PTP debut in April 2012 and, including that, has had 23 races in seven and a half years covering less than 55 miles. If he's structurally sound he's got plenty of miles in the tank yet. When a horse no longer wants to race it will soon let you know.

Really looking forward to the 2:25 @ Carlisle today... some really interesting runners and has my Cheltenham juices flowing!

Whilst it's over 2m, I've posted on JLT thread as I see Brewin, Midnight Shadow and Good Boy Bobby more likely to race over further as the season progresses.
Regardless of the result, it will be interesting to see how they jump a fence and it should be an informative Beginners Chase.

I think the one you haven't mentioned global citizen might make all and run out the winner. Wouldnt be bullish enough to back him at short odds. And ge could be one for a flatter track 2 miles like aintree rather than cheltenham.

I'd like to see one of the 2 novices from last year win, as they're not going too well so far.

Re Faugheen, it’s worth remembering that horses are bred to jump/race so it becomes engrained in their minds, whilst retirement sounds like the best and safest thing for any horse that racing mindset carries through to the field and horses become bored, restless etc so a continued career might actually be what the horse wants/needs.
There are countless injuries to retired racehorses whilst in the field that aren’t reported.

In the past couple of years we’ve seen several 14/15 year olds win big prizes so it’s entirely possible they can retain much of their ability, I personally think there should be more investment in Veterans series but not everyone would agree with me.

Another option is hunting although this is often more treacherous than racing....

Global Citizen is the definite 2miler in the pack, but I don't think Brewin or GBB lack pace.

Midnight Shadow is interesting down to 2m, I think he's a cert for needing 2 and half or further, and wondering if they are looking at getting his rating down for a handicap. He'll probably win it now :highly_amused:

I wasn't discounting Global Citizen, only justifying why I posted on the JLT thread.:)
Watching brief for me.... but one that I shall watch with interest
