Handicap Shortlist - Cheltenham 2020

Topofthegame took in the Lanzarote on his way to the Coral Cup. Hard to think it won't be on their mind to do a similar thing before Pic goes chasing next year.

And Modus did the same. I do like well trodden trainer paths!

Just have to hope the main aim is Cheltenham rather than this weekend. Coral Cup worth double the Lanzarote in terms of prize money and obviously more prestigious so fingers crossed.

And both of them managed to scupper their mark for the Coral Cup one way or another! Modus by winning the Lanzarote and TOTG by going to Sandown on the way to Cheltenham.

Modus definitely did... Hopefully he's learnt from TOTG and will go straight to Cheltenham after finishing 4th in this :)

Minella Till Dawn would interest me for the Kim Muir.

Finally got his act together at the weekend in first time blinkers and made a mockery of his mark. Been put up 14 in Ireland to 130 and the cut off for this tends to be somewhere in that ballpark so he'd have a chance of sneaking in right at the bottom. He's had problems but is still only an 8yo and if retaining the old ability (almost beat ABP at Fairyhouse not so long ago!) then his new mark remains well within range.

Just leave this here as a reference point...

British rating (versus Irish) following this weekend's entries:

Sire Du Berlais 152 (+3) - 7lb higher than last year's winning mark
Jury Duty 149 (+2) - 4lb higher than when 3rd to PP in 2017
Cartwright 137 (+3)
Its All Guesswork 132 (+6)
Alfa Mix 140 (+4)
Ilikedwayurthinkin 140 (+8)

Can't believe they've come up with 40's HF... top work! Just had a decent go at that myself. Lets hope for a nice run and a 4th or 5th placed finish to put him spot on for this.

You’re welcome CCM. The market has been moved already from 40/1 to 28/1, so your wad may have moved it!
I am hoping for a pipe opening run by Pic D’Orhy (beaten 4L to 6L) that confirms that mid-distances will suit, but doesn’t up his handicap mark from 146 more than a couple of lbs. Then put away until the Festival.

To be fair, 28/1 is a decent enough price, hopefully it will look even better after Saturday (and after any handicap rating change).

His current rating is too high for the Martin Pipe, and Willie Mullins and Dan Skelton dominate the County Hurdle, so with Paul Nicholls having well placed horses in four of the last five Coral Cups, his entry in the Lanzarote tuned my radar on to the Coral Cup.

Great shout this so thanks, had him any race only as well as wasn’t sure what plans were hurdles or chasing.

Given the entry and the route Nicholls has previously done this with totg was a no brainer at that price :encouragement:

Pic still 25s with Hills any race 27.6 boosted

That’s a decent price to SOAG. My bets are with cashout, Im trying to steer that way this time in case the horse either doesn’t perform well on Saturday, or performs so well that his handicap mark is smashed out the park. Now I’ve written it, it sounds like walking a tightrope on his hoped for run on Saturday. :dejection:

B365 have put up their full market for the Coral Cup today.

Sempo - Martin Pipe Conditional Jockey Hurdle

Travelled well in the Champion Bumper last year finishing sixth by just under eight lengths. That race has proven to be very strong form and all the horses in front have franked it several times over.

Made his debut over 2m but all pre-season reports suggested a step up would be forthcoming during the season. He made a couple errors late on and was given an easy time coming home in third place. On his second start over 2m4f he finished the race strongly doing his best work at the end. I think that will prove decent form as the winner (Cobbler's Way) looks to have potential and The Big Getaway (who I also rate) was also running a good race before his last flight mistake.

Sempo will need one more run to get a mark but I'd imagine they will find a reasonable maiden to run in shortly. Depending on what mark he receives they may have to get him higher in the weights with another run before the festival.

This is all pure speculation and I've seen no comments on potential targets for this horse. I'm sure at the beginning of the season he would have been on the shortlists for the Novice Hurdle races at the Festival but he does not look to be campaigned in that way. If he can back up the Champion Bumper form then he could still be very competitive in a handicap and the trainer once the Pip Race last year so knows what he's doing.

Sempo 33's (boost available) for 'any race', that's fair if you a handicap is what you are thinking, not many of Joesph's horses will be that in a h'cap IMO

Pic D’Orhy has been slashed for the Lanzarote on Saturday, dropping across the board from 7s and 6’s to now being 4s to 5s.
Hopefully a sign that he is running on Saturday, and could run well.

Hopefully not too well, his mark is high enough. Could do with a 5th or 6th, but then the Lanzarote could be the plan and not Cheltenham.

What do we think the typical Irish bump will be 3lbs?

Just going through what top weight will be and looking at who I think can get their marks down low enough to sneak in

Agreed, the highest rated winners of the Coral Cup in the last 10 years have been 151 and 153, and PD is currently 146. So a decent non-winning run would be good for showing well-being, ability to stay trip, little or no handicap rise etc.

It used to be 4lbs as standard and where Phil Smith thought there was some funny business going on, he could slap 8lbs.

He was also known to only give a small hike to ensure that a horse was balloted out.
