With a better ride last year I'm convinced the 9L margin would have been far shorter, and he'll carry 4-5lbs less this year. Fingers crossed.

He’ll remain on the shortlist for now. Too many questions over who will ride him.

Aren't the GN weights separate? Thought there was something there around how the old h'capper used to make his own ratings just for this race to compress it or something? [This is probably all made up]

It’s not that they’re separate but because of the unique nature of the course/race the handicapper does have licence to adjust the official ratings for the race....

Just something for everybody to keep there eye on,Gordon Elliott commenting on his Grand National entries on Sportinglife states he might keep Run Wild Fred for Irish Grand National.

yes they can amend the handicap for Grand National runners, but thats usually for those that have Grand national form, or form around the national fences.

Minella Times doesnt fit that criteria, nor Farclas. To me that looks like he's rated them both 146 on their current ability.

Two weeks until Festival weights are out, just a week to the entries, could Henry and Gordon just enter them in the Kim Muir to see if they are amended back by 1lb?
 
Just had a read of the sporting life bit about run wild Fred, it was going through his potential grand national team, no mention of him not running in this race.
Surely he could do this race and then go onto Irish national?

​​​​​​Annoyingly he does mention Cheltenham targets for a few of the other entries though

I think the phrase ‘keep him’ (for the Irish National) in addition to there being just a two and a half week break and significant difference in prize money has my alarm bells ringing

The Irish National is a big prize EUR 270,000 to the winner when it was last run two years ago.
That race was over a month after Cheltenham so horses could run in both.

This time the Kim Muir is on Thursday 18th March, and the Irish National is on Monday 5th April - an eighteen day break.

I think that this season a lot of Irish staying handicappers and novices-moving-into-handicaps are going to go for the big pot at home, and that races like the Ultima and the Kim Muir wont feature in many of their plans with such a small gap in time to their big staying handicap of the season.

Thinking about the Kim Muir it may only feature a few Irish horses this time round, those that are too low to get into the Irish National could come here.

I have checked back on how many Irish horses actually run in the Kim Muir, and its not that many.

They outperform the numbers with wins and placings, but not many travel for the Kim Muir, in normal times.

2015 - 5
2016 - 2
2017 - 4
2018 - 2
2019 - 7
2020 - 5

The average over eight years is 4 Irish runners, with the last two years a little more.

I'm going to wait now until the handicap entries, as the prize-money for this race, is about a quarter (or less?) c/w the Irish National, and if its going to be (on average) only 4 or latterly 5 Irish horses come over then who knows who they are actually going to be.

Minella Times and Farclas were given 146 in the Grand National weights today, so maybe they now miss out this race, and are from stables that have runners here usually.

Given the travel hassles this year its possible that this race could be one of those that the Irish don't flock to, in any more numbers than usual.

I have currently backed Run Wild Fred (IRE/UK 140) and The Big Dog (IRE 144), NRNB, but now it could be that neither, or only one travels over.

(Written off Minella Times as not getting in the weights, I would be delighted if I am wrong and he gets in)

Surely he comes here, what else has Gordon got left now? Escaria Ten, Coko Beach, Farclas all going to be too high in the weights. Braeside looked dreadful and if probably too low now. Roaring Bull beaten 88l at the weekend in a national trial.

Also who's Jamie going to ride now?? He's been on an Elliott horse for 4 of the last 5 years
