Cheltenham Gold Cup 2020

I really don't get the enthusiasm for 50/1 any horse to do the Ladbrokes/Gold Cup double and I'm even more mystified that you'd do two horses in that market.
Topofthegame and Santini are 12/1 and 10/1 best price for the Ladbrokes (on Oddschecker) with those prices reversed for the Gold Cup and either would have to win the Ladbrokes by the length of the straight to come down to 4/1 for the Gold Cup, assuming that none of the other four horses at the top of the Gold Cup betting has fallen by the wayside in the next 3 months.
It's nearly 12 weeks to the Ladbrokes and 8 weeks until the weights are published. I can see the justification for backing two in the Ladbrokes because both seem to have the race as a nominated target and they will likely start much shorter on the day but it's surely better to take the projected winnings from that race and reinvest in the Gold Cup after mature reflection.

To further cloud the issue, although some have liked the Ladbrokes/Gold Cup stat there is a recency bias in there. Quite legitimate to say that 2 of the last 12 Ladbrokes/Hennessy winners have gone on to win that season's Gold Cup, but expand the data a little and you can also say that only 2 of the last 35 have managed to do it.

I considered Burrows Saint at 66s as a lively outsider but the horse he beat in the Irish National wouldn't get anywhere near placing in a Gold Cup so I put a pin in it for now

RR will be talking him up in the next few weeks for the Gold Cup

Interesting to note that Burrows Saint followed pretty much the same post Cheltenham race route as Kemboy the year before, ie. the G3 at Limerick and Irish National, albeit in the reverse order due to the later Easter. The ratings are similar as well which makes me wonder if he may go the handicap route early on. Probably depends on when he's ready.

I haven't placed the bets but...

2 in the last 35 is a 17.5/1 chance ..... at 50/1 - two darts, 25/1 on a 17.5/1 shot.

That shouldn't be a reason to back him :highly_amused:

As I said, I looked at him... then put a pin in it because I was in no rush... the improvement that could come (like Kemboy - and interesting to see the comparison from archie)

I suppose if RR is about to start talking about him I'll have to think about it sooner rather than later.

Are they really going to run Santini and Topofthegame in the Ladbrokes though ???
Rated 163 & 164 respectively will make it tough.

Denman won his first off 161 & Bobs Worth off 160.
Are these two that good ??

If they do run (and I understand the trainers have kind of mooted it) and win. Then they will surely go favourite for the Gold cup.

Agree with Archie though and 50-1 just seems skinny to me.

My point was taking the horses out of it... I was pointing out that is why you could have some enthusiasm at the price.

I don't know how good they are.... relative to the competition they might not need to be... so even if they won off higher marks than Denman, I don't know if I'd believe it :highly_amused:

There isn't a single person (official handicapper included) that doesn't rate the second season chasers highly that I've come across yet... so it might pay to be against the grain this year.... as relative to other years RSA winners and placed horses they're horrible value in the Gold Cup market.

On the non-RSA 2nd season chasers, Lostintranslation for me looks the most standout "horrible" price.... but I wouldn't say he can't win the Gold Cup... I just wouldn't think about backing him yet

I understood what you were saying.

But on the two horses and their chances, they will have to be very very good to win off those marks even in an average renewal.
And you may be on the right lines with the ratings. Is it really feasible that the first three in the RSA are all that good ?

They are all underpriced including LIT, but one or two are likely very good.

I think they are almost certain to run them both in the Hennessy. The race would look ideal to my eye, but as you say, they are hardly thrown in. On the flip side, second season chasers have a great record in the race and are my usual starting point when trying to find the winner.

Fwiw, Santini was available at 80/1 for the double only a week ago which I thought was a decent enough price.

As Kev said it will depend on the field that lines up and ground and other factors.
But, at the weights alone, they'll be giving some good horses around about a stone. A very tough ask. Although not impossible.

Horses like Discorama, La Bague au Roi, Le Breuil, OK Corral, Mister Malarky, Vinndication.

Just a few of the second season chasers that could line up, and all rated around the 150 mark.
All these look solid enough stayers and just as likely to improve.

I'd be very interested in OK Corral myself, but no mention of it or sign of it in the listings.

For Santini or Topofthegame to win against a decent field then you're talking 170+ already and gold cup favouritism for sure.

I really like the second-season chasers this year, and the Ladbrokes/Hennessy should present an ideal early target for many of them. Agree with Quevega that there are good options to the favs getting a stone in weight, that could set a stiff task. I had Discorama added for the race by Bet365, and he is one I would be interested in, if declared, and Top Ville Ben too.

I'd be one firmly in in the Topofthegame / Santini camp for the Ladbroke.

The main question I actually had was why Santini has always been considerably shorter in the betting for it between the pair. Checking just now I can see both have actually shortened and the difference is now 10/1 (TOTG) and 9/1 but until a few days ago that difference was 4 points (14/1 vs 10/1) which I couldn't quite get my head around. Bar a couple of course wins for Santini surely TOTG starts off as the most likely winner no? Though I fully expect Santini to be targeting the race, right now there's been nothing from connections yet unless i've missed anything at the tail end of last season where as Nicholls has repeatedly said several times through the summer the plan. I've just been very surprised by how the market has priced the pair. As much as I think Santini should be tailormade for the race, the same goes for TOTG. Santini has lost twice now when they have met. Excuses in both - yes. But how much so is debatable for me. I've seen a few posters in here mention Santini as the likely winner (or at least the one with the most interest this far out). Interested to hear why him over TOTG? I honestly can't really split them and i've backed both as those excuses for Santini could swing it in his favour but for all the while he's the shortest price of the pair i'd have to go with the bigger price if coming down on one horse...

Fully expect both to run and have no issue of the weights / marks. Al Boum Photo (175) and Kemboy (177) have set the standard. The rest have to get to that level. I fully expect the top 3 in the RSA to be 170 minimum horses come the Spring. So running off 163 and 164 although high they should really be right involved in the finish if they are to make that step up. We've seen the odd Gold Cup runner flop (Djakadam for fitness?, Lord Windermere how he won a Gold Cup?!) but generally if you're up that standard i.e being at the very least competitive if not placing / winning you have to be winning this i.e Native River, Many Clouds, Smad Place, Total Recall. The actual weight I see being no issue. Both are built to carry the weight and the type of race should suit to a tee. Both have form of running horses off high / top weights too:

Henderson:
2005 - Trabolgan 11st 12 - WON
2012 - Bobs Worth 11st 6 - 160 - WON
2014 - Triolo D'Alene 11st 12 - 157 - PU
2017 - Whisper 11st 8 - 161 - 2nd

Nicholls:
2007 - Denman 11st 12 - 161 - WON
2009 - Denman 11st 12 - 174 - WON
2012 - Tidal Bay 11st 12 - 166 - 2nd
2014 - Rocky Creek 11st 11 - 156 - PU
2015 - Saphir Du Rheu 11st 12 - 163 - 5th

Plenty of their runners have run off similar marks with no hesitation and performed very well. It's also a race that should suit both very well when alternatives are slightly thin on the ground. Particularly for Santini.

80/1 and 66/1 were enough of a price to get me to bet. Working out the prices both would have been a little more than that rolling the winnings on however I do think the timing of the race could play a factor in the price either of them will be if they were to win. Both Lostintranslation and Delta Work (and any run and win he does may well have a knock on effect to this pair anyway) will likely run, maybe a couple of times before the Ladbroke but the 2 shortest priced horses - Kemboy and Al Boum Photo or surely unlikely to run until close to Christmas. So I can see any win in this race being the first big marker layed down for the Gold Cup. So in that regard i'm imagining if either were to win, the price they become will be a few points shorter than they should be. One as bookies tend to duck for cover and overreact but 2 because the 2 Mullins runners won't have run yet. So I could easily see a 'rolled on' double not being tooo far off this price potentially.

I do however hope there could be an overreaction in the market to the horse that doesn't win and depending on the outcome straight after the race will be the time I back the loser of the pair for the Gold Cup. Though i'm not expecting anything as wild you only have to look at the prices of 33/1 for both Santini and Delta Work after narrow defeats in the RSA. Cue Card vs Vautour vs Don Cossack's King George had a fairly wild reaction too if I recall.

That said a handicap will always mean until entries and weights are announced the shape of the race could change considerably so I can't be too confident. Certainly agree there are plenty of good opposition that could line up. And this pair running off such marks will only go on to tempt other trainers and owners to have a go but i'd be very confident either of those 2 can win it even off such marks. I think it'll take a very good horse and one that goes onto be Gold Cup standard to stop them.

Or a ridiculously well handicapped horse. Without de-railing the thread too much Mister Malarky straight after the RSA was one I noted for the race especially with Tizzards record but he has over 17 lengths to find from the RSA which even with the weight swing is huge. Captain Chaos through a form line with Lake View Lad (156) I think is a huge handicap fancy off just 135 under someone like Skelton but trip is probably slightly too far (as the Kim Muir was), he'd need to win to likely get in the race and again I just think even bundles of weight won't be enough.

p.s I apologise for just how many times I had to type both Santini and TOTG in this post - particularly the first paragraph!

I agree that an over reaction is possible, and I'm hoping for the same.

Santini seems to be a horse that people bend over backwards to forgive and I've mentioned that a few times. His actual win record is very poor and not factored into his price.

That said, it's clearly not wildly off the mark that he is and could be Gold Cup class.

TOTG is my slight preference now. I'll be on both against the field though ... do might need to back don while both a decent price (relative top what I guess the SPs will be

Like the idea of Top Ville Ben off 151 getting 11/12lbs off the two market leaders , granted still work to do but at 33s vs 9/10s there is appeal there. Having said that i can see Santini and TOTG both going off around 4s so can't fault folk beating the book.

Jono i think with LIT and La Baug seemingly being aimed elsewhere that has what has brought the rush of blue over the last 24 hours.

All bookies that are quoting the Ladbrokes Trophy Chase betting are 1/4 the odds a place for 4 places, so there is plenty to think about on any 33/1 shots you fancy, with over 8/1 a place. Mind you, it’s the end of October before the entries come out, so a lot of time to pass until we see the make up of the field.

Agree that Santini/TOTG are potential Gold Cup horses for this season so they ought to be competitive in the Ladbroke from their Handicap marks. Also agree that the favourites Handicap marks will also encourage a lot of the potential improvers rated 145-155 into play which should make it a fantastic race.

That’s an excellent post. I certainly agree they both ought to go well.

However, I have a sneaky suspicion Rich Ricci wants BDD to go over fences at some point soon and this race might tempt Mullins to run his brilliant mare.

Great post Jono.

I'm not sure if PFN has since confirmed that TOTG will be aimed at the Ladbroke but I'm fairly sure he mentioned going a different route (can't remember which) and I assumed this was the reason for the price discrepancy between Santini and TOTG a week or so ago.

Great post Jono, enjoyed that.

Santini cut to 7 from 10 on skybet in the last few days.

Santini seems to be a horse that people bend over backwards to forgive and I've mentioned that a few times. His actual win record is very poor and not factored into his price.

Strange that you feel Santini's win record is 'very poor' when you consider the other horses at the head of the betting coming out of novice company over this side of the Irish Sea:

Santini:

Career Starts = 7

Career Wins = 4

Win Percentage 57.14%

Chase Starts = 3

Chase Wins = 1

Chase Win Percentage 33.33%

Topofthegame:

Career Starts = 11

Career Wins = 3

Win Percentage 27.27%

Chase Starts = 5

Chase Wins = 1

Chase Win Percentage 20%

Lostintranslation:

Career Starts = 12

Career Wins = 3

Win Percentage 25%

Chase Starts = 6

Chase Wins = 2

Chase Win Percentage 33.33%

In the way you seem to feel people will 'bend over backwards to forgive' Santini I think there will be equal measures of people willing not to as well, and view that festival run as potentially true form, which is opinion, but what is not opinion are the numbers above. He knows how to win and his win record is far from 'very poor'.
