Champion Bumper 2020

Maybe being the eternal optimist here and while it’s disappointing POP didn’t win he tanked through the race and made very eye catching progress.
The race was run at a crawl and it turned into a sprint. Patrick got caught out holding on too long and was then surprised as the winner flew by. He was very easy on the horse as he knew he had been caught out and cruised home.

I think 50s is too big to ignore given the hope reports and that I’m sure Patrick would ride him differently if he had another go.

Power Of Pause is very ordinary to look at and on that evidence his engine is nothing special. When tackled he looked like a one paced plodder. Bet 365 pushed him out to 50/1. I would imagine he is million to even run.

Maddy everyday Q.Seen her in concert in Montreal a few yrs back. Was like a dog with two dicks :highly_amused:

Horses that are beaten on debut can go on to win races believe it or not.
Every race at chelt wont be won by a string of 1s next to there name. But besides that hes plenty of time for another run over 2m

Appreciate it/ risk factor/ferny hollow / israel champ ..... were all beaten 1st time up. Yet lead the market.

Just watched the race, not ideal he didn’t win but certainly no need to be too despondent.

If we wins next time out then he’s back on track. Bookies reacting and pushing to 50/1 seems an over reaction imo.

Ferny Hollow beaten twice and cut into one of the market leaders.

Not sure you can directly compare the two though can you? PoP beaten easily by a horse who hasn't looked that good in two previous runs and been sent off at 33/1 and 16/1. Whilst FH was beaten by two completely unexposed horses who could be absolute top notchers?

Agree it wouldn't look great for POP in terms of the Champion Bumper credentials. However, the winner did have useful hurdle form and was in the process of running a decent race when falling. The form is of a decent level and the jockey helped with his 7pds. T Feeney wouldn't be a jockey i've heard a lot of, but a quick search of his 5 year history makes decent reading. 9 runs, 2 wins, 2 second, 1 third and 1 4th.
Not bad at all, and you can see why, as i thought he gave the winner a superb ride. Patrick thought he was on a rocket.
 
Think PoP being flat bred would have found the 2m 3f plenty far enough and would appreciate better ground too. Stamina was stretched and also would have needed run. 2 miles on better ground and fitter we may see a completely different animal/result. Still live in hope.

I agree. For a horse that wants 2m on good ground there's a case to be made for more positives than negatives yesterday, despite the fact he lost
 
A lot of money lost yesterday on POP, the thing I noticed was he did not display the turn of foot that he showed in the race course footage that most people have seen. Maybe he has a slight injury because he just never sprinted when asked.
 
Israel Champ form wasn’t harmed by Kid Commando dotting up at Plumpton. Wasn’t a great race but you won’t see a horse win more easily and he was away behind Israel in the listed bumper & was getting weight. With no Irish stand-out so far we could have another Moon Racer year!

Would love to see Soaring Glory back in contention for this after a break, but connections looking elsewhere. But if the form keeps being boosted then who knows, stranger things have happened and he could get an entry. :devilish:
 
I didn't get much chance to watch too much racing over the weekend, but just been and watched Power Of Pause yesterday and I actually don't think it was that bad a run tbh, definitely not a 50/1 bad run.

They pulled well clear of the others and the winner would have finished close enough behind Ciel De Neige (a horse I like anyway) over hurdles LTO, to believe there is ability in that one, plus was getting the 7lb claim from a fairly unused, but extremely competent jockey.

I think 2m 3f was asking a fair bit on debut, and he was definitely keen enough IMO. I'm not giving up on him yet. How he can go to 50's when a horse like Ferny Hollow (beaten twice) remains near the head of the betting is beyond me, but good news for punters.
