2026 Stayers Hurdle

I guess the question is does he get the 3m or is he a 2 and a half miler. I think 2 and a half is his thing and will be better suited to Aintree.
This is it for me too. If I’d never seen him try and tackle 3m before, based on the hattons grace (and other mid trip form) I would be encouraged that he would get 3m well enough. However, prior 3m runs do not back up that theory for me.

That’s certainly where the evidence would lead you so far and I feel the same but FM is also correct. If you came in blind didn’t know the horses and watched the Hattons Grace and somebody asked you who would win in a rematch over a few furlongs further it would be more than fair to say the runner up.

Looking at the entries for this again, surely Ballyburn runs. He's the only Mullins entry (unless supplementing) and would therefore be Townend ride.

It wasn't that long ago he was 5/2 fav for the race before he bombed out at Christmas. That was when a lot of the Mullins horse were underperformed so if you forgive that run, his price is huge. Previous festival form etc etc.

I was expecting him to be single figures NRNB tbh.

At the prices, I'd have him as the best bet of the festival.

I've mentioned him a couple of times since that defeat, which I think can be forgiven, bearing in mind they tried a different tactic, riding him more prominently. Held up a bit, I think he still possesses that turn of foot to at least run into a place, if not going on to win.

I'm not sure I'd have him as the best bet of the festival, but I am keen on him to go well, if they turn up with him.

I’m still expecting jimmy to be supplemented
Having started well over fences, he has since looked total rubbish, almost a dog. It would take more than a crystal ball to see him reverting to hurdles and then performing at a higher level than he has ever managed before. The reverting to hurdles bit should happen.

I backed him myself early in the hope he going back over hurdles might help but I struggle to see him turning the form around. Don't think he had any excuses last time ? He's done nothing since his Festival win to suggest a repeat.
I think it all went wrong when he was asked to chase Sir Gino at Kempton. Mullins couldn't get away from his thought that he was a two miler. Now he is light years away from the promise he displayed when running away with the Festival race. Just making up the numbers in any race.

Only two runs ago he was a whisker away from beating the current SH favourite.

Light years away.....🤣

That's a fact, but it's also a fact that it was a six runner race over the intermediate trip where three of the runners didn't even complete.
But that run doesn't put him miles off what is needed.

I accept there are negatives to him but if the best version of Ballyburn turned up, he'd be bang in the mix. I'd go as far as saying the best version of Ballyburn would win it.

He's priced up wrongly in my view and has to be shorter if he runs. If Mullins is knocking in winners all over the place, he'll be less than half his current price. Plenty of ifs in there🤣

This is 100% true.
I'll probably have a small cover on Ballyburn but would you think he might need half decent ground to ensure he gets the 3m ?
His Turners win was ridiculed for a long time (probably by me too) but there's a fair bit of substance to it now, the debate really is whether 14/1 is big value or not...

I've never been a fan of Ballyburn, but like you say, that Turners run reads very well now.

On the ground, he'd want good to soft I'd imagine. If it was genuinely soft ground, I'd be worried he'd get home.

Looking for some views on Kabral du Mathan. Now it seems he is an intended runner, does anyone have any strong views on chances? I’m struggling to weigh him up, and now the price has gone…..making it more difficult. As impressed as I was LTO it was only against a solid G2 horse in my eyes, and yet to be tested over 3m.

One for the day if at all ? Too many ifs and buts. Ground dependant it seems and a bit of an afterthought as well which is a red flag for me.

Too keen

No chance

Fair shout. Thanks for your thoughts. I have the main protagonists covered, just revisiting ma Shantou and Kabral as to whether worth covering. Both short now and not sure either is good enough….maybe talking myself out of it lol

Firstly, I have backed him each-way at 20/1 and at least it looks like being another successful crusade to get him into the race. I don't know if he will stay, and there is only one way to find out. I don't buy into the stuff that he is a bit keen so he should drop back in trip. Having a bit of speed might actually be a positive, not a negative. As a hold up horse he needs to jump well. If all goes to plan, he could be a class above.

It hasn't been a strong division for several years. Teapuhoo is good, but not that good, and was beaten last year by a horse with a little bit of toe. He easily beat Bob Olinger last time, but that horse was never put in the race. I am also on Honesty Policy at a bigger price, but would have liked to have seen a second run. Ma Shantou went from 50/1-7/1 off the back of his last win when he looked to outstay Impose Toi on testing ground. Not sure if he is good enough. Bookmakers would be delighted to see anything else win.

So hopeful of Kabral Du Mathan, but impossible to be very confident. If I was betting at current odds, it would be a win bet as I doubt they will be hard on him if he isn't winning.

As Ruby mentioned somewhere, a big concern for Kabral backers is the fact that JK got beat in the race on Teahupoo last year when he allowed it to become a speed test by sitting on Teahupoo instead of kicking off the bend. He won't do that again I imagine
