2026 Novice Hurdlers

Wilstar (half brother to Jonbon/Douvan) vs Kadastral (Skelton hype horse) on Saturday at Wetherby.

I'm very much in the Wilstar camp over 2m. He's a 66/1 play for the Supreme, will probably end up not good enough, but a horse out of a dam that has produced two progeny (albeit by a different sire), one winning a Supreme & the other finishing 2nd in one, is too big a price for me to ignore.

….Olly Murphy picking up on your point re Wilstar;

‘He is one of my better novice hurdlers and has a fantastic pedigree. He won a bumper very well and loves his jumping. He will start off in a maiden hurdle as soon as we get a drop of rain.’

Interested in how Carrigmoornaspruce does today. Form lines to Bambino and others.

Disappointing end to the race with Thefylingking but ran very well first time out, looked like he was going on to win his race before crashing out. If none the worse, will come on a bundle and if there is a price drift, he is one i will back again. It's like a free hit.

….PP go 40-1 from 66-1, 365 into 33s.

I decided he wasn't for me and cashed. Head all over the place, is not great, IMO. Also looked a bit keen.

Better Days Ahead fell in that race before winning the Martin Pipe, I wonder if he'll be that type of horse instead of a Bartlett type.

His mid season target is the Formby too. Should he win that, there'd only be one destination, you'd think.

….looking at @Saxon Warrior race planner, that DR maiden can throw up good ones. I think it’s @Runragged who’s keen on Kalypso and if he’s the one to take from today’s race, his festival price could get a severe haircut today.

Hopefully we get some tempting WTAF offers this morning.

Nearly got drawn in by Kalypso, glad I didn't.

One for a handicap now, you'd assume.

Agree. I backed him for the Cheltenham Bumper but he looked out of his depth both there and at Punchestown.

….maybe one to note from Olly Murphy stable tour;

WILSTAR

“I say if you asked me what is the best novice hurdler we have, he is potentially the best. He was a very weak four-year-old that has just improved.

“He is a very good jumper and has clearly done well for another summer on his back. All he will do is improve through the season like he did last season. I love him.

“The race he won at Perth was a good race as the seventh, eight and fourth finished first, second and third up there the other week.

“The form has worked out well and there was a lot of talk going into that bumper.”

Pipe said: “Windbeneathmywings has had a little setback so plans are on hold at the present moment.

"It happened recently and he won’t be out until the new year I'm afraid.

“It is a shame, but that is horses for you and these things do happen.”

Having rewatched Theflyingking’s run for me there’s far more positives to take from the performance than negatives. He jumped for fun before the mishap at the last, he has a huge galloping stride that will be better suited to tracks that are the polar opposite of Down Royal. The last furlong was almost a carbon copy of his bumper run there, signs of greenness & looking around at everything else other than the last hurdle.

Going left handed will help. As will having another maiden hurdle to learn on the job before going into graded company. Hopefully at Limerick in the good Albert Bartlett trial. He has enormous potential.

Had he jumped the last he’d probably have won by 10 lengths considering what was still in the tank. The bookies would have cut him to something in the region of 12/1 to 16/1. The was he was punted pre race shows the confidence at Cullentra. If i didn’t already have enough on at 66/1 I’d have bitten PP’s arm off at their initial reaction push to 50/1 that’s subsequently been trimmed back to 33/1.

We now know he gets the trip and we know he’s well able to jump a hurdle when he puts his mind to it.

Totally agree, I was quite impressed with him and he will benefit hugely with more experience by the looks of that run.
AB looks tailor made imo
