2024 Novice Hurdlers

And can't run in a Bumper as a 6yo . Those are the rules in UK though. Not sure about Ireland. I know Patrick wants her to win a listed Bumper before Willie sends her over hurdles so hopefully the race at the end of this month will be her last flat run. They could of course just run in that and then hold her back until March if they thought she was up to it. We'll see. Depends on the quality of his other Novice Mares I suppose.

Edit..... obviously can't do the last bit as she'll be 6 on Jan 1st. So fucking confusing!!!!

You can run in a Bumper as a 6yo up until the end of the Jumps season.

They cannot run in Bumpers after that date (usually the end of April)

I spoke with Paul Ferguson yesterday regarding this as his book is certain that 6yos cannot run in bumpers in the UK. He explained that he spoke directly with the BHA before authoring that part of his book and that they confirmed that 6yos are ineligible in any NHF race from 1st May 2023. That interpretation does seem contrary to the clause as it is now written though.

The way it's wrote is awful. Really needs rewording.

Wow. I'm not the only one to be perplexed by it then.

It's season to season

You cannot start as a 6yo in Bumpers at the start of each season, and finish it as a 7yo - 1st May (approx)

You can start in Bumpers as a 5yo in the season, and finish it as a 6yo, in March, April.

Should be pretty easy for us to follow the logic. :encouragement:

Yes, that's how I read the updated version too. But the BHA advisor apparently didn't if Paul Ferguson's communication with them is reported correctly.

Wasn’t this a rule anyway ?
Whats changed ?
I know 7 year olds couldn’t run in champion bumper for several years.
Seems a minor tweak affecting early season when banning 6 year olds from graded bumpers would have served the sport better in terms of the better horses going hurdles sooner.

I assumed that was the original intention but appears not. Who gives a fuck if an average horse is still in bumpers at 7 ?

Agreed Q. Why even bother having any rules. Just let any horse run in them, any age. That'll be easier for us pensioners to understand!

Just get rid of them completely

Horses can learn to race in novice hurdles

Running jumps horses in flat races seems pretty pointless to me

Get them in open company for longer

Agreed not a fan. Looks like Fact To File could potentially be 9 going 10 before he’s in open chase company at the festival.

Bizarre for a horse they think could be a Gold Cup standard.

Mystical Power form given another winning boost today.

Where do we see him going ??

Mid trip, I'd say.

Not sure how good he's actually going to be, we will find out once in graded company. Willie will give him every chance, but just my opinion that I suspect he'll be beat and could end up the old 'cliche' route of a handicap, if that's the case.

JP has so so many potentially talented novice hurdlers this season.

I think he's going to have a fantastic festival.

I know Josh and ABW on LTR don’t see him as a festival horse.

Another TWAR horse for me then. Yes, I can see him potentially going for a Handicap. Thanks COD.

Yeah, could well be the case also.

On a side note, because he runs in JP's colours, I never realised Rich Ricci was part owner of him too (well Susannah, but same difference). I guess it makes sense, given he is out of Annie Power, whom the Ricci's absolutely adore!

They are probably alluding to one of either the Supreme or Ballymore though. Could be one for a County or Pipe especially being with JP.
