2017 Cheltenham JLT

I'd fancy it a lot more in the Albert Bartlett than making its debut over fences in the JLT

Henderson pretty sure Whisper will go for JLT but door still open for RSA. "He stays three miles so it's possible."
Different Gravey could run in the Pendil with the JLT in mind; his recent schooling has been excellent
"Top Notch has grown all the way, but faces a tough task against Yorkhill."

A quick thought on this. Nicky seems to be waiting on what Davy thinks on the decision. Now DR was very very sweet on Yorkhill for the Neptune last year, think he may have given him as his nap?! but basically didn't think he could be beat. Obviously it's slightly different over fences this year but he may still have that viewpoint and then be keen to avoid Yorkhill and go for the easier RSA option, in a race he has also done very well in in the past...

Hiya squiggsy,
Posted this by accident done the same on the AB thread. NH hasn't mentioned him in his stable tour!, previously said he needs all of 3 miles but don't know if he wants to keep it up under the radar or if he isn't a serious contender. Trying to make my mind up.

Interesting angle jono... how well specifically has he done... I can't imagine moving a horse to a different race because as a jockey you feel "better" at that trip.... I can see it for 'avoiding Yorkhill' ... but I'd be surprised if Davy "knew" he was better at the RSA than the JLT for example?

Donn
Flying Angel

Flying Angel was impressive in winning the Grade 2 Kingmaker Chase at Warwick on Saturday. Never far behind the fast pace that Gino’s Trail set, Nigel Twiston-Davies’ horse was good over the five fences down the side of the track, and he closed on the leader from the home turn. Upsides at the second last, where he wasn’t as fast as Gino’s Trail, he matched strides with the long-time leader until, after they jumped the last in unison, he pulled away on the run-in. He won by over four lengths in the end from Kerry Lee’s horse, who was in turn miles clear of the remainder.

This was a good performance from Flying Angel. Gino’s Trail is 10 years old, but he is a talented 10-year-old novice, he ran Buveur D’Air to two lengths over the same course and distance on New Year’s Eve. Also, the winning time was really good, the fastest comparative time of the day by far and 0.11secs/furlong faster than Racing Post par.

This was Flying Angel’s first run since he was pulled up behind O O Seven in the Steel Plate and Sections Chase at Cheltenham last November, so it is reasonable to expect that he could come on for it, in terms of sharpness at least. He did appreciate the fast pace and he handled the heavy ground well.

A lot of his good form is on soft ground, like when he was third in the Betfair Hurdle last season and when he won the Imperial Cup last March, and when he won on his chasing bow at Perth in September. However, he proved than he can handle better ground too when he finished second to Ibis Du Rheu in the Martin Pipe Hurdle at last year’s Cheltenham Festival. That run also proved that he could handle Cheltenham Festival conditions.

He will be an interesting outsider now if he runs at this year’s Festival. The Arkle is a possible target, but you have to think that he might have a better chance in the JLT. He would not have to face Altior there but, more importantly, it is over two and a half miles, which is probably more his trip on the likely goodish ground. He is interesting though wherever he goes, he was a high-class handicap hurdler last season and, still just six, Saturday’s run was just his fourth over fences, so he has lots of scope for progression.

Another NRNB bet to nothing...???

Hendo on Different Gravy - "He will do one of two things. He was great at Ascot the first time and horrible at Cheltenham the second time and Whisper came and won the race. I thought that all he had to do was jump round and after three fences he was in a total muddle. We came back and he wasn’t doing it at home either and we were seriously thinking of going back over hurdles and he is in fact in the National Spirit at Fontwell on Sunday with a view to going back over hurdles and going for the Aintree Hurdle and missing Cheltenham. However, in the last ten days his jumping has come back completely. I am going to talk to the owners and he will either run in the Pendil on Saturday which I hope would mean he would come back into the JLT or he will go to the National Spirit and won’t go to Cheltenham."

25/1 NRNB now... IF he does the former, he'll shorten up and you can trade out IF he doesn't, money back.

He was well fancied last time and in a race that looks likely to cut up quite significantly, you could end up on a decent each way price?

I thought the same and backed him at the 25 NRNB a few days ago. Looked like he could be anything the day he won at Ascot. Assume that Nico would ride given that Top Notch and Whisper (assuming goes here) have retained jockeys.

Davy Russell's RSA record in the RSA since 2010 (5 rides) - 31211

Probably didn't mean that he would re-route a horse just because it's a race he likes/done well in himself - more so that he's got a good record and seems to know very well what it takes in a horse to win/compete in the race. If he doesn't fancy taking on Yorkhill and thinks Whisper has what it takes for an RSA (having ridden the horse this season) he'd be happy to go for RSA perhaps.

Heard Patrick Mullins give Yorkhill as their Nap of the festival on the latest Racehour podcast (Douvan not included you'd presume :p)

Who's Douvan ?? ,. L.o.L ! , I completely forgot about poor old douvan , Just writing out a Ruby L.15/31 . got 4 and couln't decide on a 5th, cheers jono

NOVICE CHASERS

I didn't get YORKHILL going over fences until Christmas time. I thought I had the other two for the Champion Hurdle (Annie Power and Faugheen) and I said I'd let him go chasing.

I thought about it [going back over hurdles] for about two seconds and then I said no. I spoke to Graham Wylie and he was thinking the same thing. We could always come back over hurdles next year, but we'll see how he gets on in Cheltenham.

We’re going for the JLT.

-----------------------------------------

The single best piece of news I have had this season. Absolute heart in mouth stuff as he in flying off to the left, getting his fences all wrong, pulling like a train and being an idle little monkey after the last. One of the least enjoyable (potential) races of my fledging 'career' as a punter :p

Good news for me too Kev - got a link to his quote? You have a lot riding on him don't you Kev?

Cheers, got any fancy prices?

So with Coney Island out of the festival, Whisper going RSA and Charbel going Arkle this race is starting to cut up.

Good news for Yorkhill backers (myself included) on the face of it HOWEVER i'm sure Ruby will be hoping that the race doesn't cut up much more. A look through the runners in the betting:

Yorkhill
Top Notch
Politilogue
Disko

Coney Island - OUT
Might Bite - RSA
Whisper - RSA
Charbel - ARKLE
Waiting Patiently?
Diamond King - PLATE
Frodon - BYPASS FESTIVAL
Identity Thief - BYPASS FESTIVAL
Bellshill - RSA
Flying Angel?
Clan des Obeaux - BYPASS FESTIVAL
Cloudy Dream?
Shantou Village - HANDICAP
Ball Darc - BYPASS FESTIVAL
Royal Cavier - ARKLE
...

Means it's getting hard to find many other runners outside the top 4 in the market - a small field is very likely. I'm sure Ruby would have wanted to have plenty of cover in the race but that doesn't look like he may have it.

Luckily Disko should ensure a strong pace and gallop but a small 6-7 runner field is far from ideal (11 runners in the Neptune, arguably his best performance)

It looks that way.

9 ran 2016
8 2015
12 2014

If I had one I would still want to take on Yorkhill rather than Altior.

Mental that Jono.

Good news for all us Yorkhill backers, but a severe lack in numbers is a worry.

I'm reading all sorts of negatives about Yorkhill (as a character), Top Notch looks to be an each way bet to nothing

Having had Charbel at 33s - I've decided to take the 16s on Waiting Patiently NRNB with Victor before that goes, as it does look like being a low numbers field come the day.
