2017 Cheltenham Gold Cup

Sizing John has the right profile ...along with blacklion. Has a gold cup winner ever come via the 4 miler ?

Prob not RC but the 4 miler is a very different race now to the one of a few years ago, much classier race now and the recent upgrade to G2 will make sure it keeps getting better...

I can't think of many ex 4 milers who have even run in the gold cup. Jono did a post on the form from last few festivals and definitely a race on the up.

If you we're picking just on trends then you couldn't have NR or MR because of the 4 miler.... but as Ista says (and jono did a piece on a while back) that race is looking particularly strong and no reason it won't continue too.

I might do a poll for this race.... if every horse was the same price (so value wasn't an issue) if you had one dart at the race, where would it go?

Would be different to where a bet would go probably :)

And remember, Kicking King and War Of Attrition and Best Mate were all two-mile novice chasers before they stepped up in trip and won the Gold Cup

But the RSA has given us a lot of winners since. There has also been the JLT since they won.

Don Cossack - Novice year RSA (Fell)
Coneygree - Would have been RSA
Lord Windemere - RSA
Bobs Worth - RSA

On His Own is probably as close as an ex 4 Mile Novice has come to winning it ( and boy was he close).

Interesting stat that's quoted in the Weatherby's guide, since 2000 there have been 62 horses who have attempted to win this race having failed at their first attempt.
Cue Card, Djakadam, Don Poli, Smad Palce, Road to Riches, Saphir de Rheu and Irish Cavalier all fall into this catagory....

What do you make of this years guide Ista (and any others who have got it)? Bought the previous years and enjoyed the read, debating whether it's worth it again?

No I think it's had its day jono.
I'v e had it every year since it started so it's a habit for me, but trends/stats are available from so many different sources these days this is no longer the bible it once was.
The presentation doesn't grab me anymore and they've moved away from contenders profiles which I found particularly helpful especially with novices, this will be the last year I invest I think...

Cheers Ista. Will hold back then. Presume there's no free Stan James bet this year either? :devilish:

Champagne West form boosted again by Pleasant company winning in Ireland

Another scan Tuesday...he couldn't...could he?!?

Colin Tizzard plans to have Thistlecrack scanned again on Tuesday following the injury setback that has curtailed his season.
So dominant in the staying hurdle division last term, the nine-year-old has translated that form to fences, winning the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day.

He was beaten by the ill-fated Many Clouds in the Cotswold Chase at Cheltenham, but remained at the head of the Gold Cup betting until suffering a torn tendon.

Tizzard said: "After 36 hours of feeling gutted, I thought, 'We better move on from this'. It won't be the last one, but we found it early and that's the main thing.

"We are going to scan him again on Tuesday. There was a little tear there, but there is no heat or swelling there now.

"We just want to check again, just to please ourselves really. It is not like he is walking around with his leg in a bandage."

I'm trying to do that right now :encouragement:

I was trying to get some of the bigger prices. All the vultures have arrived and beat me to it.

What is going on being in work all day. Come on and check what's happening and Thistlecrack being backed into 7s?????

Wrong diagnosis?

But if he is able to run surely he won't be fit enough stood in his box for 2 weeks.
