2016 Champion Bumper

I really really want to pull the trigger on Augusta Kate, but I just don't trust Willie in saying it's an option now. I think I'll wait until Saturday/Sunday when I feel that 365 will go NRNB on all races.

probably depends on whats in Ant and Decs diary.

Gardner said: "We really don't know where we are going at this stage, but he definitely won't go to Cheltenham unless the ground is soft and even if it is, he might not go anyway.

"I'll have a chat with the owners and see what they want to do. The entry stage is March 1, so I'll see if they want to pay the entry fee or not.

"The Champion Bumper is certainly not the be all and end all. We have a very nice young horse and the last thing we want to do is ruin him.

"Even if they call the ground good to soft at Cheltenham, you know there'll be some quicker parts. You can go there with a nice young horse, but then after running down that hill on quick ground,

in the blink of an eye you don't have a nice young horse any more.

"Unless the ground is described as soft, he won't be going."

"Without wanting to sound too clever, he ran as we expected at Ascot," said the Devon-based trainer.

"He ran a nice race at Uttoxeter, but he was a bit green and got a bit lost and we knew he was better than he showed that day.

"That's why we decided to go to Ascot with him, which is not something I would do unless I knew I had a good horse as we don't get one very often.

"He hasn't had any leg problems, but he does seem to be at his best on soft ground, so that's what we'll be sticking to.

"If we miss Cheltenham, we might be more likely to get soft ground at Punchestown.

"Whatever happens for the rest of this season, he'll be a better horse next year, I guarantee you that."

Someone is full of it then and its looking like the guy I got the word from.

Bare in mind he did give me 2 nice price winners on the day(s) last year.

JP has purchased a Mullins bumper horse today and it has been cut across the board.

Aspen Colarado entered at Leopardstown on Sunday too.

Have you been following Drumcliff FM ? Another one in JPs colours. Entered at Kempton on Saturday.

Yeah - I was impressed last time out. Been very weak on the exchanges though so I assumed wouldn't be going for the champion bumper.

Decent bumper at Kempton tomorrow, Criq Rock and Drumcliff both trading around 25s but an impressive win for either will see their price tumble, almost backing both now....

Yep agreed, I'd be backing the runner up before I back the AC....

Opened Oddschecker expecting to see some red, not blue.

Shocking, it really is.

Didn't look like any improvement. Beat Clonkeen Lad again by 27L when last time was 26L. Though the 2nd horse in the previous raceWithout Limites did frank the form winning by 12L next time out, but did not know what he beat.

I would say none of these horses are not good enough and to look elsewhere.

I don't know. I thought he did it comfortably enough today.

Id say they've left a small bit to work on so could he improve in 3 weeks? Would Barry G bring out more if he takes the bumper ride?
(nothing against the young O Brien lass)
I've him in a couple of bets at 12-1 and 10s and I'm happy enough.

I'm on AC at 33/1. He doesn't strike me as an obvious winner but then again, nothing does.

A few mentions for the Ferguson horse High Bridge on twitter ?

His best chance to saddle a Cheltenham Festival winner at the final attempt, however, could come in the Bumper, the target for the five-year-old High Bridge.

Even by Ferguson’s standards, High Bridge has a pedigree from the top drawer. He is by Monsun, an outstanding sire of stayers whose offspring include Estimate, the Queen’s Ascot Gold Cup winner, and consecutive Melbourne Cup winners in Fiorente and Protectionist. His dam, meanwhile, was Ameerat, the winner of the 1,000 Guineas in 2001.

High Bridge has not seen a track since December, when he thrashed two subsequent winners by 13 lengths in a bumper at Catterick. It was a hugely impressive success and it will be surprising if High Bridge does not start at a shorter price than the 20-1 which is still widely available.

“He won very well at Catterick and since then he’s thrived and thrived and thrived, and I’ve purposely left him alone,” Ferguson said.

“I’m not a betting man and I certainly won’t be getting involved but I’ve finished second in the Bumper with New Year’s Eve and fifth with Purple Bay, so we have a pretty good idea of what’s required.

“All I’m saying is that he’s given me every indication that he can be a player, but we need good ground. If I’m turning up on heavy ground, my ballerinas are going to be in trouble.”

Mares may be under-rated

Since the possibility of Augusta Kate running in the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham has gathered momentum, it is worthwhile taking stock of the performance of mares in the race. Just two mares have won the race since its inauguration in 1992: Mucklemeg in 1994 and Total Enjoyment in 2004. (And no, 2006 winner Hairy Molly was not a mare.)

It is not a great return on the face of it, just two wins in 23 runnings, so just 8.7% of the winners were mares. The logical conclusion, therefore, is that Augusta Kate is up against it.

But dig a little deeper. Not many mares run in the Champion Bumper. In the 23-year history of the race, there have never been more than three mares in one renewal, this in a race that usually boasts between 22 and 25 runners. In total, 32 mares have run in the race from a total of 535 runners. That’s under 6%. So, actually, 8.7% of the wins from under 6% of the runners is a good return.

Also, since 2008, a total of just three mares have run in the race. There were none in any year between 2010 and 2013 inclusive, there was just one in 2014, Izzini, a 50/1 shot, and just one again in 2015, Montana Belle, another 50/1 shot, who finished eighth.

Finally, when Total Enjoyment won the Champion Bumper in 2004, there were just three mares in the race. One of the others, Refinement, finished second to Tom Cooper’s mare, and the other, Blazing Liss, fell. When Mucklemeg won it in 1994, Aries Girl chased her home. They were the only two mares in the race, and they finished first and second.

So perhaps the task that is facing Augusta Kate is not so daunting after all.

Great stats here Mayo, and one that are all positives for me (with a hefty stake on Augusta Kate at 25/1)... Lets hope she ends up here now and not Sandown!
