2016 Champion Bumper

I have grown to like the bumper and it must already generate serious betting turnover.

Think they should go the whole hog and up prizemoney and do more to encourage the top flat jockeys/trainers to get involved.

Converting flat fans to jumps and vice versa should be near top of the racing promotion agenda imo.
 
OV - I've often heard that mooted but I thought it was a sad day for NH racing when Pizzaro won the bumper all them years ago.
Old fashioned and extremely blinkered I know but Cheltenham for me is the pinnacle of the NH season, if jocks want licences they should be made to compete in 10 qualifying races, no-one sticks a dozen hurdles in the way to make life easier for NH horses in the Ascot Gold Cup....
 
Fantastic point there istabraq and i totally agree, flat trainers/jocks shouldn't be able to just rock up in the bumper with a chance to claim all the glory, it is a NH race and a certain minimum criteria should be met, however i do agree fans of both codes should mix more however us jump fans know true class and racing comes under this code, any horse could run out a lucky winner over a 5f sprint but it takes true class and a training peformance to grind out a 3m 2f win over fences

I think because my starting position was one where I went to the bar when the bumper was on I dont mind what they do with it.

Hurdles in The Ascot Gold cup - now there is a brillant idea :p.
 
One-time E250,000 purchase Aspen Colorado landed the concluding Coral.ie (Pro/Am) Bumper at Leopardstown today, winning for owner J.P. McManus and father/daughter, trainer/jockey combination of Aidan and Sarah O'Brien.
The son of Galileo quickened well in the home straight for a four and three parts of a length win over Without Limites.
Trainer Aidan O'Brien was represented by his son, and soon to be Pilltown successor, Joseph O'Brien who stated “he won nicely. We thought he was a nice horse but didn't think he'd win like that and there was plenty of talk for horses in it.
“He was in Ballydoyle as a yearling but was just immature and backward mentally. The bit of time has done him well and hopefully he can progress.
“He's a nice horse, even to go jumping with next year and while he seemed to handle that ground, being a Galileo should be better on better ground.”
When asked about Cheltenham bumper he said “he'd probably have to have another run and we'd see then.”
 
I'd heard good things about AC prior to today's race and backed him for the champion bumper. I thought he did it very nicely and will surely improve for the run. It'll be interesting to see where he turns up next.
 
Drumcliff also a possible for McManus.

Not a race he targets much though ? Only win was

Willie gave this one a thumbs up early season but hasnt been out yet.

Asked to name one young horse to watch out for, Mullins chose Admiral Chief, a four-year-old gelding by Presenting, owned by Gigginstown house Stud.

"There is a nice horse catching my eye every morning called Admiral Chief, he's a Gigginstown bumper horse," he said.

"He is a chaser down the line but he covers a lot of ground, so let's hope Michael O'Leary wasn't planning a big gamble on him!"

Correct. They changed their opinion last year and they all ran poorly. Won't be any Gigginstown runners as they don't like the rough nature of the race.
 
Augusta Kate - Champion Bumper?

Augusta Kate - Champion Bumper?

I've been backing Augusta Kate (25/1) quite heavily since November time for the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham.

Mullins has come out and said they're not sure if the mare is going to Cheltenham Festival and they may aim for Aintree or Punchestown in April... Does anyone have any idea if there's been an update on this??

Unfortunately for me, the Champion Bumper isn't a qualifying race for NRNB, so I could be set to lose my stake if she doesn't go to Cheltenham! :(
 
As far as I know Augusta Kate was to be aimed at Aintree but theres been no update since they said that but in your favour perhaps is the fact theres no outstanding Mullins bumper horse as yet and the one Wullie likes,Admiral Chief,is Giggy owned and they dont like the bumper so it may not run at the festiva and its been difficult to train recently and hasnt been out so far.Also Fulham Road Riccis best bumper horse is injured and wont make the festival so they may have a change of heart with Augusta Kate but thats just my opinion.
 
I think they'll save her for Aintree but hope they don't JKite.

Augusta Kate has to be a serious contender if heading for Cheltenham, having won her two bumpers very easily the runner up in her Navan race went out and won a maiden hurdle by 39l.
But the current price probably reflects this, any positive statement by Mullins about her participation and I'm sure she'll halve in price
 
Great British racing should beg the owners to run at the Festival.

Would be huge coverage forthe Masters Syndicate, made up of leading owners Andrea and Graham Wylie, golfer Lee Westwood, agent Chubby Chandler, ex-footballer Alan Shearer and television presenters Ant and Dec.
 
yep, the info I heard also is that she skips chelt in favour of the mares bumper at aintree
 
Do we know for sure fulham road is definitely out injured for Cheltenham, again it's a horse the stable hasn't shed much light on publicly...?
 
I'm not sure WPM has said publicly but Patrick Mullins did confirm he was out for the season (possibly on ATR, I can't remember).
 
Sutton Manor entered at Thurles tomorrow, bought by WM & HK last year at the festival sales, they were hopeful it would return this year to run in the bumper, unfortunately it's owned by Gigginstown so can't see it, unless it wins extremely well tomorrow and WM can twist their arm like he's trying to do with Admiral Chief
