2015 National Hunt Chase aka the four miler

It continues...

Loads in with a shout LR, those two are in the mix, I fancy TYM if he runs here, but RSA looking more likely, one that certainly jumps well enough is Vroum Vroum Mag, not sure about the trip though, or the Mullins running plans

Here you go MG...

One horse jumps out - Vroum Vroum Mag in the 4 miler. At the scratch stage last week, Willie Mullins whittled his team for this down to 4, with Valesur Lido being a highly unlikely runner.

The crux is obviously the ongoing debate between Willie and Gigginstown on Don Poli’s target – this or the RSA. It’s probably 50:50. My gut feel is that Willie generally wins these arguments, but equally the exchanges are suggesting won’t, and that Don Poli will run in the RSA instead. Don Poli’s 3/1 NRNB and whilst I can see him going off very short if he lines up and the likes of Wounded Warrior and The Young Master don’t, that doesn’t scream value at this stage.

The conceived wisdom is that if Don Poli doesn’t run, Patrick will be on Perfect Gentleman (25/1). He’s had plenty of problems but they’ve had a much clearer run with him this time and he won a Grade 2 over 2m4f at Cork in November. He fell early on in the Drinmore and then got stuck in a bog at Limerick at Christmas. It’s difficult to assess how good he is, but he is a ten year old and it’s hard to imagine that he can actually win.

Willie Mullins has said during the season that Vroum Vroum Mag is likely to stay in Ireland, where she’d have some simple tasks in valuable mares novice chases. However, she was left in the JLT, RSA and 4 miler and the vibes are that she might deputise for Don Poli in this, if he were to end up in the RSA.

She’s jumped really well and destroyed her rivals in 3 mares novices chases at up to 2m4f since joining Willie Mullins. The form has worked out with her victim at Cork, Our Katie, winning twice since. She could be anything and already has an RPR of 142 without having come off the bridle – and she gets 7lb here. 4 miles is a different test entirely and good ground is an unknown. However, given her value as a broodmare, there’s no way she’ll be risked unless connections feel that she’ll handle the ground and trip.

She’s 25/1 ante-post but is 20/1 NRNB, which is huge. If she lines up, Don Poli won’t and my guess is that so she’ll start about 5/1 – so she has to be backed now.

Mayo - I am now leaning towards "Perfect Gentleman" for this race as my suggection.

LR Day 1 Yankee Suggestion.

Race: National Hunt Chase aka 4 miler
Selection: Perfect Gentleman
Odds: 25/1 (23/02/15)

FJ Spotlight:
Perfect Gentleman has been running in inadequate trips of late so has been short of pace against the likes of Valseur Lido and Gilgamboa which caused mistakes. Record over 3m hurdling reads 31 where the 3rd was a 3L Fox Rock. He kick started his chasing campaign with a 13L win over Vics Canvas (2m7f) with the later going in the next time over 3m4f and a recent 1L 3rd to Living Next Door. PG then won his next beating the out of form Sadler's Risk by only 3L over 2m4f, and then you have the two bad runs mentioned earlier. He didn't seem to be stopping over 2m7f and jumped very well so no reason why he couldn't give 4m a shot. I think I will have a nibble myself @25/1.

Alternative selection shamelessly lifted from the Speiler on oddschecker

Bet 365 became the first bookmaker to go NRNB on all the races at the Festival at the weekend, and when that happens I like to trawl through all the races and see if there is any value in uncertain starters who I would give a big chance to if lining up.

Looks like Betfair have gone NRNB on all races.

I know we all agree with VVMag in the 4 miler, but just to point out Betfair are 25/1 NRNB on Pefect Gentleman where PP are as short as 12/1 anti post.

Yep. Wont be that price if he runs.

Ruby stirring the Don Poli pot :highly_amused:

So when Walsh picks four horses that he would love to ride at the festival next month it makes for interesting reading-least of all for the jockey's he'd dismount to take their place. Bryan Cooper might not be too happy to do a job-swap for his ride on Don Poli in the National Hunt Chase but Ruby reckons he's a certain winner on day one:

'I’ve had to be imaginative about this. Don Poli is owned by Gigginstown so Bryan Cooper has the mount. But if he was switched to the amateurs’ race – the 4m NH Chase – Patrick Mullins would ride him. Stamina is not a problem. He settles well and is a good jumper. He’d be a penalty kick in this race an absolute nap.Being a gallant loser is no good to you at Cheltenham – it’s all about winners.'

Interesting little titbit on preview thread about VVM - fingers crossed for a run.

Is it significant that Bryan Cooper does not mention Don Poli as a Giggi horse he is looking forward to riding in Racing Fx blog?
'The ones I’m really looking forward to at the moment are DON COSSACK, ROAD TO RICHES and NO MORE HEROES. They should all go there with great chances but I’m not nominating one as my best ride as that’ll probably get them beat!'
Wondering if the internal debate swinging towards Patrick getting the ride in the 4 miler?

Did he say the race for No More Heroes.

A stab at a long shot....

LR Day 1 Selection.

Race: National Hunt Chase aka 4 miler
Selection: The Job Is Right
Odds: 20/1 (21/02/15)

FJ Spotlight:
Ran well for most of the way when unseated at the last in the race when Djakadam made his mark for the GC. I thought TJIR got a little out paced towards the end which may have caused the mistake at the last where those 2 drew clear. He seems to prefer good/soft, soft and has put in good performances between 22f-25f. I have put a line through his chase debut but other than that he has had 1 bad run over the bigger obstacles. Kept on well 1&1/2L behind Very Wood 22f, then 3L staying on same pace behind Living Next Door when Fox Rock was 2nd 24.5f, won next race over 25f. All this tells me he will relish the extra distance and will have less chance of being out paced towards the end. I think he is worth every bit of the 20/1 available.

There has been loads of money for this horse I put up a few days ago. Looks like he is definitely running now.

He has a lot to find on ratings LR.

but this guy is no mug

in his betfair piece ..

This remains an ill-formed market with some of the fancied ones unlikely to run and in their absence Very Wood is solid enough; he is rounding into form at the right time and has the crucial Festival winning form.
At a bigger price - currently 15.0 on the exchange - The Job Is Right is the value. Confirmed for the race on Sunday, he brings good handicap form to the table; fourth in a Paddy Power and booked for second in the Thyestes before falling, those runs tie him in with Gold Cup pretenders Foxrock and Djakadam. The Irish staying novices look a strong crop and he has stamina and experience in abundance, both of which are crucial in this.

Cause of causes is one for money too I think.

Codd booked

Cause Of Causes is a great ride to pick up. He's a good, tough handicapper and it's hard to believe he's still a novice.

"He's probably vulnerable to an up-and-coming novice who's less exposed, but I'm sure he'll be a great ride all the same.

I've been looking for one in this awaiting DP being confirmed for the RSA. The Codd booking on Cause of Causes has swung it, this is an ew selection for me. Has run in way better class than most of these, been very competitive in big handicaps and appears to stay very well. Stable a big plus also.

Well it sounds as if VVM is going to Limerick after all. Ricci talked about Champion Chase as future target according to that Paddy Poower preview. Why was she even entered in 4 miler then :sorrow:

So that everyone puts a load of anti-post bets on and lose money for nothing! Do you really think Mullins doesn't know where his horses are running from day 1?

It's all a game this f****** ass is playing and we are on the other side.

All the entries pee me off too but I am not sure he does !

Coneygree going to Gold Cup might change targets for RSA types (i.e. Don Poli).

Don Poli going to RSA might change targets for other Gigginstown horses and the ride for Mr P Mullins.

IMO a lot of debate about where Mullins chasers are going to run and very little about how disappointing they have been at Cheltenham. Ballycasey and Felix Yonger were the second coming last year for a while.
