Ultima Business Solutions Handicap Chase 2018

Not sure you can attach any blame on Heskin for those rides. He has been a bit of a cliff horse for me too. I was considering backing him again for this but much prefer Gold Present, whose form took a boost with Frodon winning on Saturday.

No, that was more a specific comment about the tactics on that horse and a general comment about Heskin. I find him very one dimensional.

She isn't quoted but would Mia's Storm be a good fit for this? That is assuming she came out of Kempton unscathed? Perhaps someone can update?

Will they bump Gold Present up again in light of Frodon?

My issue with GPO still is that, his win is CLEARLY the best handicap rform of the season, so I think the price will have already gone... (I think we've had this conversation already though!)

They didn't bump him up this week Kev, still rated 155.

What price are you on at?

14s normal
12s WH NR insurance
10s NRNB

My arguement that he is well found in the market isn't going to go away, but that does mean he'll be a single figure price...ergo argueably value still....

I got 16/1 and 12/1 NR insurance, added more today at 14/1.

He'll be a short price on the day if Bowen is riding imo

Yes I think you're right.

Very tempted to back now... hadn't thought about Frodon.

Infact I have, 1.5 pts e/w 13.08/1 NR ins* WH boost

Surely De Boinville will be on board? Assuming he goes there I would be much happier if they didn't change jockeys.

WIll Henderson want to give up that 5lb claim in any handicap race?

Suppose it depends what else he has, but people will be queuing up for Bowen, and NdB probably isn't a 5lb better jockey?

Amiable fly / frodon the only horses id thought of for this race. Both could do with going down a little in the handicap.

Don't think they'll be going here now.. If only they read page 1 and went straight there.

:highly_amused: At least you can take a slice of comfort in knowing you "spotted a good'un" :p

I am afraid I not on the Bowen bandwagon, just yet. Let's see where he is in a couple of years. They put him on Thomas Campbell at the weekend and he didn't make a scrap of difference, at least in a positive sense. It might have been the ground but the horse didn't seem to travel a yard. I don't think it is so much about whether De Boinville is 5lbs better, it is more about the fact that he has struck up a good relationship with the horse. At this stage I don't think there is any need to tinker with that.

Bowen can only claim 3lbs now

Personally think there is enough evidence to say that claiming jockeys are worth their claim. I like NDB but in a handicap I'd have Bowen as I don't think NdB and his relationship with that particular horse is particularly special

Tipped by Pricewise so presumably there is some indication from King that she isn't going down the more realistic handicap route.

@5simdog

Is GOLD PRESENT being aimed at the Grand National? Do you think he’ll stay that sort of trip?

He was given an entry, as you know, but as we have learnt from Whisper and Vyta Du Roc this week, it is not set in stone that he’ll run in it. He worked this morning and I’m looking at a 3m race at Ascot on 17th February as his next outing. As for the Grand National trip, we won’t know until we try.

No mention of the Ultima at all?

No mention of Cheltenham, so at least we are not going to lose our money.

He certainly has enough scope for the fences but I would prefer him over the shorter trip. Of course that would be next year after winning this year's Ultima.

I am wondering if Henderson is just trying to pee me off. Next thing he will be taking Buveur D'Air out of the Champion.

The Ultima has been a decent stepping stone and a good prep run for the National, could easily see the race coming into play after Ascot. The question was related to the National and then Nicky has highlighted the next run so i wouldn't worry the Ultima never came up in the answer.

Last year he ran:

26 Nov - Doncaster
26 Dec - Kempton
25 Feb - Kempton
14 Mar - Cheltenham
7 Apr - Aintree

This year could be:

2 Dec - Newbury
23 Dec - Ascot
17 Feb - Ascot
13 Mar - Ultima Cheltenham?
14 Apr - Aintree Grand National?

So follow the same pattern and he had a short gap between his festival prep run and the festival. My worry would be that you really wouldn't want to be winning again and getting a higher mark. The current 155 would already be on the very top end of what you would want in this race and most handicaps? Surely and then the only race at the festival would then be the Ryanair?

Ryanair as a Grand National prep? I don't think going up and down in trip is a bright idea, but giving On The Blind Side one Cheltenham option wasn't the best bit of thinking so who knows?

Last Goodbye who won the 2m5f handicap race at Leopardstown yesterday might come here... 20/1 available. He came 5th behind Tully East/Gold Present etc in the Close Brothers last season and the trainer said this is the most likely target now, straight here.

Would get a big swing in the weights with Gold Present even after he goes up from yesterday?
