Mares Hurdle 2024

They can supplement her if they want.........I think??

Don’t think she really stays at that level ….today felt more like a 2.5m

I hope she goes Mares as backed her ages ago at decent prices …..and think would have chance if Lossie doesn’t stay well

Not sure anything will want to take on Lossie.

I’m going to stick my neck out, and ready to be shot down. I just don’t think Lossiemouth will stay, looking at her style of running. I think both her stablemates will go past her on the run in.
very classy, but fizzy and free running and not a stayer in my book.
if the mares hurdle was over 2m……..unbeatable

I think she is at least worth taking on at current prices

Lot may depend on ground & how race is run.....last year it was run slowly and suited speed horses, who actually were the ones that controlled the pace (less said about other jockeys that day the better)

If its soft/heavy....quite likely on Day 1.....and they got decent pace, then i think you might be right......it will def test her

Interesting that Rachael rode TSMG forward more today.....wonder if that's with half an eye to March? As not the way that horse is known to like, but Rachael is prob the most tactically aware of current jockeys, so could be a plan

We also know Maries stays it well....so maybe Nico will rider her more for stamina this time....as might some of the other jockeys, who can't ride as badly as they did last year

Hard to compare the two but everyone was saying very similar to Constitution Hill regarding going up in trip, thinking he'd be classy enough to run over any trip, and he disappointed (by his very lofty standards) over the extra half mile. There is obviously a question mark on trip which you have to take into account, anyone saying otherwise is just wrong IMO.

Still worthy favourite though, clearly the best horse in the race. And as much as I hate to say it, I agree on them sending her to the mares hurdle.

…Marie’s Rock;

We were delighted she was able to get her head back in front there, we don’t necessarily see her as an out-and-out three-miler and that’s probably not her championship distance,” said Tom Palin of syndicate owners Middleham Park Racing.

“We will keep her to the mares’ races, but she’s not ineffective at these sorts of distances and against the opposition today she was able to take advantage of that in what looked a good opportunity to get her head back in front.

“She has been running some very creditable races in defeat, she’s a tough, game mare. She carries her head a bit awkwardly, a bit in the ‘Marie’s Rock style’ but James said when You Wear It Well came to her she wasn’t going to lay down and she toughed it out.

“It takes a very good one to go past her, I thought the writing was on the wall with that performance behind Bob Olinger – he looked resurgent, the Bob Olinger of old, and I felt we lost nothing in defeat to him.

“I was delighted that she was able to confirm her place at the Cheltenham Festival, obviously life has got a little bit harder in the last 24 hours with Lossiemouth looking like the proverbial second coming!

“We’ve booked our ticket for the mares’ race anyway and we’ll head down that route.”

I have no doubts she will stay 2m4. They didn't go fast yesterday and she wasn't keen. She can go that pace for another 3 furlongs no bother. If they go no pace, she'll destroy them coming off the bend so something is going to have to set a decent enough pace.

Not backed anything in this and doubt I will now until we see final decs.

That is sensational reading as a Marie's Rock / Dashel Drasher backer :glee:

….Maries Rock 18-1 NRNB in Hills specials.

According to Nick Luck, the French race Lossiemouth is being aimed at is the French Champion Hurdle over 3m1.5f. Connections obviously don't think the 2m4 at Cheltenham will be a problem.

Be good to see Theleme, Hermes Baie, Lossiemouth and any other British/Irish take each other on there.

Hopefully Jeu de Thaix puts his name forward in open company as well - he looks a proper animal.

You Wear it Well on target for Mares Hurdle.....

“I think we just got beat by a better horse on the day in that set of circumstances,” said Snowden.
“It was our first try at the trip and the ground was a little bit quicker than ideal. It turned into a little bit of a sprint from three out and we had a bit of ground to make up.

“But Marie’s Rock is rated 150, we’re rated 140, we were carrying the same weight and we only got beat a length and a half, so it was a decent performance and I was glad to get that run into her, it was a nice run.

“The Mares’ Hurdle is the plan and we might look at the Warwick race (February 10) on route.”

Lantry Lady entered on Sat

Maybe good NRNB play b4 then …,,only had one run for Henry and bolted up

They'll surely go Coral Cup now with You Wear it Well after that. She'd be lucky to get a place in the Mares on that showing. Better ground will help but she'll need more help than that.

Echoes In Rain seeks perfect Festival farewell

Craig Kieswetter is excited for one last crack at the Cheltenham Festival with Echoes In Rain, who will head to Prestbury Park for her racecourse swansong next month bidding to bring the curtain down on her career with a fairytale success.
Former England cricket star Kieswetter is a key figure in his family’s Barnane Stud alongside brother Ross and stud manager Patrick Wynn-Jones, with Echoes In Rain proving to be the star performer of their jumps string over the years.
Trained by Willie Mullins, she has won nine of her 30 career starts across both codes, with her finest hours coming at the Punchestown Festival where she won Grade Ones both as a novice in 2021 and then two years later against her fellow mares.
However, she has found success at the Cheltenham Festival harder to come by and will be given one final chance to conquer the Cotswolds before moving on to be a part of Barnane’s broodmare band.
“She’s going to head to Cheltenham and it will probably be her final hurrah before we take her back to Barnane Stud to start her career as a broodmare,” said Kieswetter.
“She’s a real fighter and every time we ask a question of her, she goes for it. For a mare who tries her hardest every single time, she’s had to come up against the likes of Honeysuckle and State Man all the way through her career.

“We’ve had some fantastic fun with her. I was there when she got pipped on the line in the Irish Cesarewitch, Rachael (Blackmore) jumped off and was devastated, but she has given us some fantastic times.
“We are looking forward to one final outing with her and then she can start her new career.”
Last year Echoes In Rain had to settle for a minor role as regular adversary Honeysuckle bowed out in style in the Mares’ Hurdle and Kieswetter feels that race is the most likely for Echoes In Rain’s final appearance, rather than stepping up to face the might of Constitution Hill in the Champion Hurdle.
He continued: “We’ll have a discussion with Willie and his team and see which direction they want to go. I’m suspecting it will probably be the Mares’ Hurdle, but you never know.
“Willie won all the Grade Ones at Leopardstown and is operating at a ridiculous strike-rate and is the best, we are more than happy to just follow the advice of where he wants to go.”
