Stayers Hurdle 2020

Sky Sports

Stayers' Hurdle hopeful Emitom will not reappear until the new year after suffering a setback at home.

Trainer Warren Greatrex had set his sights on the three-mile prize at the Cheltenham Festival in March for his five-year-old, who has only been beaten once in six starts.

Emitom is a dual bumper winner and bagged three novice hurdles last term before finding only Champ too good when contesting an Aintree Grade One back in April.

Greatrex said on Thursday: "Emitom had a setback schooling yesterday. He was found to be lame behind, he's been checked over and he's sprained a hock.
"While the prognosis is good and he will be fine, he will not be ready to run this side of Christmas.
"The aim will be to have him back in the new year - where and when I'm not sure, as first and foremost we have to get him right.
"As he is a young horse, we just want to take our time and not rush him."

Ffs, not what I wanted to hear! Doesn't sound too serious. Hopefully be ready for the Cleeve. Thanks for posting up though.

That's interesting. Always doing his best work late on in races last season, staying on well behind Battleoverdoyen and would have got super close to Reserve Tank at Punchestown if he hadn't have clattered the last. Will only be 6 next year so potential for good improvement. No price though as of yet but could be one under the radar.

I think they have probably also looked at the 3m chase division and thought it best to delay his chase career, as ultimately he is a chaser in the making. I don't think I'd be too bothered by him over hurdles again, though the step up in trip is a definite positive.

20/1 any race with Hills.

Cheers Archie. Was hoping there might have been someone already quoting double that for Stayers. 20s too short at this stage up against Paisley and whoever else is thrown in this direction

Where's that form FTM?

Would be helpful to have the source to these quotes FTM. Appreciate them greatly, but always useful to know where they come from (also re Battleoverdoyen drinmore comments in RSA thread).

Found it chaps, it's Racing Post - Here

"I haven't decided for definite, but it looks as though we'll be staying over hurdles this season," said the Grand National and Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning trainer. "Especially considering all the novice chasers coming out this time around."

Mouse also said, "We could go up in trip to try him as a staying hurdler. He's a bit behind, but seems grand. He's just so big that he's slightly backward still, and it'll be Christmas before he's out."

Possibly no rush to back him in that case?

Yeah I don't think so archie.

I suspect the red hot looking novice chase division means he will be held back for that and probably raced lightly this season.

Probably needs all that time to decide which jockey suits the horse.

6 different jockeys in 7 races.

Only 1 win under rules from 6 races too.

Brave to fancy him this early, albeit decent form.

Im going to throw this one out to the forum , sure he has had his supporters in the past. The conundrum that is Might Bite ,a talented but quirky individual who has had his problems but who does go extremely well at Cheltenham in general.
Henderson says he going to start him back off hurdling before going chasing , now what if he absolutely trots up , do they keep him to hurdles or Plan A - back to chasing. I personally see only the Ryanair as his only long term goal if he does go back chasing , Gold Cup trip just beyond the old boy.

I then glanced at the World Hurdle betting and if you take out Paisley its wide open. MB running style would be well suited to this race and 3m spot on trip wise.

Not backed Might Bite yet but just wanted to see if anyone else has a opinion first.

My opinion of Might Bite is that chasing was the absolute making of him.

RPR back that up too, with a peak Hurdle rating of 150 - which is a whopping 23lbs short of his 173.

Official ratings are 148 hurdles and 167 chasing too....

It's enough to put me off.

Cashed out my bet on Emitom for this with PP. He could well still feature so I toyed with keeping the 33/1 but he looked a very raw horse last year and for me he's one where I really think would have benefitted most from a full campaign building up the experience for this race. A campaign starting off in the new year at best with just a couple of runs likely makes him less of an appeal. Big shame as one I was looking forward too and though he'll still be on mind for this, I'll happily reassess come the new year at a shorter price
