Unlucky that year perhaps but take this year, the winner/3rd/8th all go on to be 150 horses in a couple of starts chasing. This is not the race to be campaigning a non novice no matter how well hcapped they might be, it's fiercely competitive and littered with future graded horses year in year out ! It can be done but chances are there's always a couple with far more potential in there. Add to that last year he was campaigned to run in said race and it went tits up early doors, why centre another year for his third crack at such a race when he's already been optimistic he can take higher rank than a capper.

Just State Man & 4/5 places iirc, my worst ever year for the handicaps.

Looking at the winners I expect very few made a profit from the Handicaps this year.
The only winner I had was Third Wind. Only backed that for fun as the 3 of us sharing a Hotel room all week farted for England all week!

            A big fat 0 - loss of 55pts out of 55.

I only had Commander of Fleet and Stateman on the day and a few places.

Nothing currently in the market that I'm desperate to back for a handicap either.

Were you on the Guinness? One of our friends was on it all week & nearly killed the rest of us with what his arse was producing.

I blame the Wednesday monsoon for all mine going down, I hadn’t accounted for that when backing horses a month earlier!

I did ok, even though the Kim Muir was a disaster.
I backed Corach Rambler antepost at 33-1, but cashed and changed to NRNB at 25-1.
My strategy of early NRNB prices and having 6-8 runners in each race paid off, but mainly thanks to Global Citizen.
I pretty much beat SP over 75% of the time also.
State Man, Corach & Global were my only three to win, but had several decent priced placed horses also.

It was a difficult year though.
Had Gaelic Warrior triumphed then most would have been ok.
Don't usually get more than 2 or 3 Fav's up anyway, so it's never easy.

Lager man. Think the Thai and Indian food evey night after 15 pints probably didn't help !!

Christ wouldn’t have wanted to use the toilet after you the next morning!

I'm going to leave the Handicaps completely alone now and just do my EW cross doubles on the day. I can then invest the money saved on the more predictable races !
State Man, but tbh not a vintage year for me - he was my only handicap winner so good thing I did back him AP!

I had just the one ante post handicap winner last year, Global citizen 50/1 in the grand annual. Funnily enough I had him backed massively for the county hurdle, and of course once he got the grand annual entry I had to cover him. Even though he was clearly the best handicapped horse in Britain, I never backed him for the grand annual once he was declared, probably because of the huge disappointment I wasn't going to get a run from the county.
Would he have beaten state man? I'm not sure he would have.
Hopefully I can find another 50/1 winner for us Quevega
