This might be bad news for you, but I have already got bets on 4 of those 5 and the World Hurdle thread is putting up a strong case for Jezki too... sorry

    • Can't see any price for him yet but Uxizandre for the Ryanair could be an interesting one. Former winner of the race, a record of 211 round the course, a positive update recently on his injury. Can be known to throw in the odd stinker but when he's on form (which invariably is usually at the festival) he's such a slick jumper.

I'd imagine he'd be around 25 to 33/1 considering he missed all of last season and is slightly forgotten.

Has form up the hill so could easily figure, though there's a chance this years 2m nov chasers could be special....
The positives: loves the place, one of the top rated hurdlers, with arguably the best trainer of novice chasers and potentially still improving.
        Negatives: flat bred

He should probably be priced up similar to Identity Thief, who finished down the field in the Champion hurdle, but I think he's something off a forgotten horse having missed the spring festivals.

          • I think Old Guard would need to improve a lot for a fence to get in the frame in the Arkle on ratings at least. Obviously it depends what turns up but his hurdle form would be behind the form of the supreme wouldn't it?

            • Not sure he'd be far behind Kev. Rated 157 over hurdles, there won't be many rated higher that are going chasing this winter. He won his last 3 races at Cheltenham so absolutely loves the place.

The form of his international hurdle win in December is probably questionable as most of those in behind disappointed as the season progressed but he's 33/1 so going to be a few question marks at least.

I've had a decent bet as I can find as many holes in those at the head of the betting at this stage.

              • In case anyone missed it this is from Nicholls yard yesterday he couldn't hide his enthusiasm about old guard, Paul quoted saying" everything went wrong from after the international, I admit i ran him too soon at kempton and then suffered a pelvic injury, but looking at him now he looks magnificent and in fantastic order, can't wait to see him jump a fence even though he's flat bred he's tough enough to go chasing and I see him in the same mould as dodging bullets, plans are fluid and he may take in 1 more hurdle run before chasing"

                • Interesting having looked in to the ratings now I am home and it looks like taking away Douvan, Old Guard would have been top rated this year. Not as much to find as I thought and from my original post about it, if he did "take to fences" and improve on his hurdle rating by 5 lbs you're looking at a very good horse unless there is a special one in against it. Higher rated than Min is for example.... and Altior and Yorkhill (although I think I might be using the ratings prior to the festival)? Someone can correct me... Certainly made me re-think though!

Doesnt seem to be quoted for any Cheltenham markets but got off the mark over fences at Killarney last time 2m 4f.

                          • Positives words from Harry Skelton about two novice hurdlers this season, Betameche, saying he's all speed and really is under the bracket of could be anything and expects him to rank right up there, currently 33/1 for supreme novice, also Robin Roe he believes will be very good this year and physically looks well, there was also a mention for Two Taffs who goes novice chasing and is due to appear on October 9th at Chepstow, expects the horse to come on leaps and bounds after taking a lot of time to come to hand last year before getting it all right at Ayr

Briar Hill got chinned by a 66s shot a few weeks ago but the third that day (Tocoroco) has won twice including a G3 yesterday in a canter, so that form may not be at all bad, and BH himself has won since.
Back over hurdles ? He does appear to have his jumping issues but back hurdling may be regression, unless they see the horse as the Mullins WH representative ?
