Weekend Racing

I did a lucky 31 today at Gowran park 1. - Cartwright - 12-50 - 2nd 20-1.
2. - Ard na carraig -1-20 - 3rd 8-1.
3. presenting percy -1-50 - 1st 9-4.
4. Lucky in milan - 2-25 -5th 16-1.
5. - Monbeg notorious -3-00 - 1st 7-2..

Two ante post bets I placed on Wednesday. L'ami Serge 4/1 and American 7/1. I'm relieved that they are both entered.

Looking forward to tomorrow, first visit to the festival trials, looks a good day of racing! Cleeve Hurdle should be some race, hopefully some indication for the stayers, no idea which way I'm leaning to yet though tough one!

Cheltenham bets for tomorrow

1.50 Frodon
2.25 American
3.00 Slate House

Think I'll just watch the Cleve :)

I've backed American again tonight and think he's going to take some beating.

I'm blaming the standing start for his poor performance in the Ladbroke Trophy and will happily put a line through that run. Soft ground and a small field should see him at his best imo

I can't see L'ami Serge being beaten tomorrow. Nap of the year (so far :devilish:)

I'd love to give American another chance tomorrow too FM. The card has me going round in circles tho any one of four or five could win on there day. Id back TLS if i wasn't cautious about connections having his Grand National mark in the back of there heads. Quite like Thumb Stone Bues chances for the same connections in the sky bet chase at Donny. Course form and he's still unexposed over fences so room for improvement hopefully.

I shouldn't be telling you my thoughts Sean. We are first and second in stable stars:devilish::highly_amused:

Subs made already FM. Hadn't a clue you were the Gigginstown silks...Im in a few leagues with mates with wagers and bragging rights on the line there my priority to be honest. I bombed out last weekend, Ben Pauling flu ridden yard to blame!

So am I, and I'm not winning that league either! £50 a man so I'm trying my hardest :highly_amused::highly_amused:

My subs are done too. BDM was already in mine, added L'ami Serge, Sceau Royal and Melon.

Bit of healthy competition in the FJ league might spur us on a bit!

Sceau Royal looks a shoe in alright but i wouldn't back Melon in a fit he has no bottle...

I brought in Apples Shakira, Finians Oscar & Thumb Stone Blues for the bonus race.

My thinking - Melon should get placed in the bonus race next week and Faugheen might not turn up, in which case, I think he'll win.

Yeah i see your angle alright, i'v a bit of a back up plan in that scenario too.

The Cleeve Hurdle is fascinating. I have attempted to analyse in depth but any light I was hoping shed on it has been obscured by a dense fog. Anyway, in case you're interested:

Agrapart will be well suited by the ground but is not well in at the weights. Despite lizzie Kelly insisting he will be suited by the longer trip, there is little evidence to support that contention.Beer Goggles would obviously be a sentimental winner but a lot will depend on how soft the ground is. His win at Newbury represents good form but the time indicated that the ground was not as soft as it may well be tomorrow and all of his previous form was on decent ground. He (and maybe Saint Are) are likely to make the pace. Not to be ruled out but, on balance, may find this too tough.Wholestone has course form but I remain to be convinced that he is as effective over 3 miles and will overlook despite decent course form. Court Minstrel will surely struggle at these weights, on this ground and over this distance. Thomas Campbell is interesting: his handicap rating would indicate he is the best in at the weights but I would be inclined to take that with a pinch of salt. He was raised 10 pounds for his win here in November but if you take the view that James Bowen is no 7lb claimer then he was raised nearer to 17 pounds - not sure his form so far merits a 158 rating. That being said, the ground was soft in November so no issues there, the distance is fine and he is clearly a much better horse for going left-handed ( 5/7 left/handed v 0/4 right/handed. Finian's Oscar is a complete 'talking horse' as far as I'm concerned and there have to be concerns about the distance -happy to leave well alone at the likely odds. The World's End would be my bet of the day if this race was run on good ground. He was tanking along in the Albert Bartlett last year when falling at the 2nd last. He has not been at his best so far this season and reads to me like a horse being prepared for March. That and the ground are the two things that would me hesitate tomorrow. Ex Patriot is interesting in the sense that I have no idea why they have brought him over for his first try at 3 miles. He is ridden by one of my favourite jockeys (Rachael Blackmore) who is a great judge of pace and presents the horse well but there is nothing in his breeding to suggest he will benefit from this step up in trip. However, he ran a fine race in the Triumph last year so the course (and ground) will pose no problems and, if there is no pace, that will play into his hands. This is a Grand National prep for Saint Are and his first run over hurdles for almost 7 years (although he did win a Grade 1 all those years ago).Colin's Sister has a lot to to turn around the form with Beer Goggles and Wholestone on a course where she has not really shown her best form

So, after all that I have no idea but will put Thomas Campbell, The World's End and Ex Patriot in my combination exacta and trifecta with a small e/w bet on the latter.

My view on it for what its worth is that all of the players that have run already in the few stayers trials have looked capabale of beating each other on any given day, so I'm willing to take a chance on Finians Oscar reverting back to hurdles, he's a PTP winner and has looked a dour stayer to me over fences so far, his confidence may be shot or he may relish a return to smaller obstacles. We shall see i suppose BOF.

It's all about opinions. He'll probably win by half the track!

Cant wait for this weekend racing. The Irish racing should show how were all doing with our Ante Post bets. ;)

Sharjah is one of my main bets for the festival, really confident that this will run in the Supreme, so much so that I've been at it on twitter for the last month or two fighting off those saying Getabird will turn up here

I may end up with egg on my face, but I'm expecting a good performance this weekend and put him up there near the top of the market. 8/1 feels too big... is that because those without rose tinted glasses are able to see that this horse is pretty much second tier? With Pricewise backing it, I've since had my doubts... but all I can do is go off previous trends with where mullins normal sends his Irish PTP'er (Ballymore) and French Bred flat horses (Supreme)

Only other doubt is that Sharjah went off at 8/1 LTO and Townsend jumped onto Real Steel... straight that. Maybe Sharjah wasnt showing much back home or Real Steel was and ran a stinker....

I'm really looking forward to this weekend, as it will answer a lot of questions.
