Stupid Questions

What happens if you back a horse AP, does not get entered for race, but then supplemented for race. Pertaining to Fasttoslow..

No reason for the bet not to stand as normal as far as I'm concerned.
I suspect that this exact example is part of the reason why most AP bets aren't settled as losers until final decs :indecisiveness:
 
Thanks Odin, that’s what I thought, just can’t remember happening with one of my AP bets before.
 
I'm probably being very stupid but something that was said on a podcast that I don't understand with all the handicap rule changes is that as Anzadam isn't a novice so he only needs one more run for a mark. He's had 3 runs so one more run would be 4.

Is the below rule only applying to novices then?

'To be eligible to run in non novice handicaps you need 5 hurdle runs or 4 chase runs'

He needs 3 runs to get a mark. But 5 runs to participate in a handicap at Cheltenham.

Was the podcast specific to Cheltenham? Or just the general Irish/GB racing calendar? If the former, I’d say they’ve got it wrong and were referring to last year’s race conditions.

It applies to all horses as far as I'm aware. Nothing I can see in the rules to say it's just for novices.

Possibly he could be yeah, he does tend to be clued up though so I'm not sure.

Is it not just 5 just for open hurdle handicap, although not sure which races are novices handicaps now.

Edit - read rest of the thread :encouragement: he’s not a novice from his win in France.

On a separate issue, that’s something think is really odd: the lack of a novice handicap hurdle. Given the race dynamics in recent years, I’d have made the Martin Pipe a novice handicap hurdle.

Only the new turners and NHC are novice handicaps, no?

The idea (presumably) is to force unexposed horses into their G1 novice option which of course if geared more towards hurdlers as chasers are likely to have shown their hand on the course over timber.
What the programme misses in my view is a dedicated 5yo schedule, create a qualifying series with a final that carries a decent pot then these 5yo novice hurdlers aren't trained for a County from the moment they lose in a graded novice event....

Unfortunately too many people doing these podcasts that think they know it all and talk with the confidence that people then believe them.
  • Currently horses must have run at least three times (chases) or four times (hurdles) to be eligible to run in non-novice handicaps at The Festival. From 2025, this will be increased to four chase and five hurdle runs.
There are no novice handicap hurdles at The Festival so that part is irrelevant.

Would the only exception be the boodles? Sure they are only require 4 because of age.

Boodles is a juvenile handicap hurdle, not a novice, so still just the three runs required. Lark In The Morning won last year on the back of just three hurdle starts.
