September ‘24 Yankee

Given todays news

Slade Steel @12-1 looks value for the arkle, for this months yankee I reckon.

Should be Favourite really (aside from Ballyburn if he goes chasing)

…he was included in July but nothing to stop Irish Rugby selecting him again.

Looks like the only bit of 12-1 left is with 365.

SS clipped in a few points for BANC and left same for Arkle. Perhaps they think SS will avoid Ballyburn again if he goes the shorter trip ? Gets more intriguing by the second.

All game playing with minnow money. I’d rather suspect he’d go arkle.
we have to get one Yankee with ballyburn in the churdle?
might not happen, but he doesn’t look a chaser to me, despite breeding

You are right. Based on Willies comments from last season the Champion Hurdle is still right in the mix, probably even top of the pile. Whilst I am with the majority in thinking he will go chasing, it hasn't stopped me getting him on board very early for the CH .

…I actually think the decision to scrap the Turners makes the CH more of an option for Ballyburn.

Mullins can’t now say 2m or 2m 4f over fences, it’s 2m or 3m. The key is, he’ll have a very good idea of where Ballyburn stands with State Man and Lossiemouth and he’ll only push him down that route if he feels he has the beating of both.

Very much with you on this Eggs. With them scrapping the Turners it makes sense that Willie will keep a few more to hurdles than normal and the Dawn Run Double must be very tempting for the great man to further enhance his legendary status. Still loads of twists and turns yet.

Not usually one to put forward a horse for a months Yankee (and apologies if he’s already been mentioned) But having looked through the Yankees already decided for 2025 I see only Il Etait Temps been added for the Ryanair. At 33/1 I’ll nominate Bravemansgame. I’m sure I heard on a Cheltenham review Podcast that the owners have given up on the idea of running in Gold Cups and a very different season ahead is planned for him with the Ryanair named as his Target. I’m hoping the drop back in trip will see him back to a level whereby emulating Protektorats performance of last season.

He was one of my first AP bets Basher for the exact reasons you state. I think a lot of trainers will have looked at the Protektorat run and thought 'why not' the same applies to L'Homme Presse. Just hope Nicholls doesn't wait for Aintree because Bravemansgame has proved he handles the track just fine. A drop in trip and grade (unofficially) could just be the tonic. Hopefully a decent run in the King George and finishing about 3rd behind Fastorslow and Il Est Francais will finalise that decision.

A trend was forming even before Protektorats win in the Ryanair last year with 160 + horses stepping down from 3m rather than stepping up from 2m. Also maybe horses that don’t truly get a fast run three and quarter miles Gold Cup trip ? or even horses that maybe are just short of Gold Cup winning class ? Winners of the Ryanair that may fit this profile I would suggest are Envoi Allen, Allaho, Frodon, Vautour, Cue Card and Alberta’s Run. Other 3m 160 + chasers that have been placed have included Conflated and Tornado Flyer. However three Gold Cup winners have ran in this race over the last few years (Don Cossack, A Plus Tard and Imperial Commander) although Don Cossack and A Plus Tard were placed in it before winning the Gold Cup afterwards. Only Imperial Call has done the double( Ryanair and Gold Cup). Looking at this years race then horses such as Bravemansgame, L’homme Presse and Corbetts Cross could fit the same profile, as well as last years winner Protektorat ( Envoi Allen nearly won it last year after winning the year before). Obviously the caveat and maybe why the prices are so big on these horses, is more around will they run in the race rather than their respective chances of winning it. I do not believe that Bravemansgame, L’Homme Presse or Corbetts Cross can beat Galopin Des Champs, Gerry Colombe or Fact or File over the Gold Trip and in respect of Corbetts Cross then you have the same ownership consideration with Fact or File. They may well miss Cheltenham altogether and go to Aintree etc but if they run at Cheltenham then will they run in the Gold Cup ? and if they run in the Ryanair what will their price be ? Worth getting them in the book methinks.

….hopefully Irish Rugby is reading input with interest ahead of Captain’s decision time.

Middle_Of_March has suggested he’ll be back to run things next month.

Keep the suggestions coming.

My nomination is Murcia (TH), strong case made elsewhere on site and a bit of 33-1 available.

Great post Wayward Lad.

….would you put Gentlemansgame in that category Wayward Lad? Highly tried at the 3 Spring festivals after beating BMG in the Charlie Hall, he looks short of top quality despite running ok for portions of his races.

Not seeing him in any Ryanair lists, maybe he’s just a dour stayer without the top class finish. I actually used Hills double boost on him to get 132-1 for next years Grand National, I dare say that will be proven to be a bit daft.

He certainly is. I will remind everyone at the end of next week that I will be reading the entire thread that weekend and will post the selections on the last day of the month, Monday 30 September, and at an agreed time, so everyone has the chance to receive it at the same time.

Good spot Eggs re Gentlemansgame, as yes he would fit the trend profile. For me he would need to improve a few pounds though (could do as he is only 8).

I to think your on the ball WL and my fancy would be L’Homme Presse. I watched a re-run of last years Gold Cup recently mainly to see how close Gerri got but then I noticed this horse running really well out in front 2 out only to fade thereafter. It was L’Home Presse which made me think the Ryanair trip etc might be made for him.

On the subject of 3m chaser's dropping back in trip, I was desperately hoping Willie would send Bronn to The Ryanair last year after fading in the closing stages of the RSA the year before. instead he declared Bronn a stayer and entered him over extended trips this year, only for the horse to return form figures of 44PP. I'm hopeful he comes back in trip at The Festival and maybe gets entered in the new Turners handicap. One for the February 25 Yankee! :onthego:

Bronn would be ineligible for the new Turners handicap as he's not a novice.
