RSA Chase 2020

Champ jumped well in the main however I thought he was a little slow getting from one side to the other.

Exactly my thoughts.

He clearly has the stamina and turn of foot; he breezed past them on the bridle and his last two jumps were super.

But in running I thought he was slow at most of the fences. Possibly the horse being a tad keen and Geraghty restraining him a bit. But I didn’t think it was spotless.

A warranted fav at present, and you’d be pleased if you’ve got him onside at double figures, but 7/2 is SO skinny. Lots of big players still to turn out, as Kev stays. Bright Forecast the one i’m most looking forward too.

That was the whole point of today, to slow him into them, learn to respect them. He was clever enough.

He let out the reign on the last 2, to let him jump them on a stride. Of which he did, no bother.

Yep
He pottered round behind a decent pace, but was gathered together and went back on bridle like a good staying thing over the last couple. And beat one or two potentially useful novice chasers too.
Bodes really well I reckon.

I'm with you on the last bit. Very encouraging to see him doing his best work and looking most powerful at the end of his race and jumping the last few as good as you could hope for in a horse at the tail end of a decent paced race. As a backer I couldn't ask for any more from him on his first run.

Think its worth mentioning just from a race point of view, in chases at Newbury you really are on the back foot if you dont wing the cross the fence, Champ probably put in his worst jump of the round and let the three in front steal a few lengths there so I thought that made the ease in which he closed the gap and picked them off in the straight more impressive.

Does anyone know if Red River was alright after his fall today in the race discussed above? I can’t find him in the betting markets but can’t find any news on whether he was alright after? I’m assuming he’s not

He’s fine thankfully

What a fabulous write up that was from Blake. That's what every racing journalists should aspire to. Great stuff.

There’s no better journalist/pundit/judge/expert in the game than Kevin Blake

I thought Champ was superb today. Really really impressed with him.

He settled, he jumped and he showed that his engine is magnificent.

I agree .....happy to be on

Think we have already seen some pretty good horses out this year and festival shaping up really well

Kevin Blake’s write up on champ is superb, well worth a read

I really liked that performance yesterday hard to see him not being a big player if lining up in March. As someone who is not on in any meaningful sense (couple of small free bets and that double) plenty of food for thought before he lines up again.

Blake’s assessment of the educational aspect of yesterday’s run made the debut all the more impressive IMO

Will be interesting to see how Reserve Tank gets on at Wincanton on Saturday

I’d expect him to win but I’ve written off the RSA for him now. Fiddlerintheroof in the first looks like a nice Tizzard/Power double.
