National Hunt Chase (4 miler) 2019

I like him BC. Coming off a fall not ideal but has a little bit of Festival form.

Champagne Classic
Champagne Classic ran another good race in finishing second to Chris’s Dream in the Grade 2 Ten Up Chase. Settled nicely early on behind the two pace-setters Blow By Blow and Moonshine Bay, the Gigginstown House horse moved nicely in third place for Jack Kennedy as they rounded the home turn. He came under pressure as they raced to the second last fence, and Chris’s Dream and Moonshine Bay got away from him a little, but he found plenty between the last two fences. He moved into second place on the run to the last and he chased Chris’s Dream all the way up the run-in, staying on strongly to get to within a half a length of him by the time they reached the winning line.

It was another big run by Champagne Classic, on just his second run back after a long break. A hugely encouraging third behind Ballyward and the afore-mentioned Chris’s Dream in a Grade 3 contest at Naas on his first run back, this was another step forward from the Gordon Elliott-trained gelding, running a highly talented rival to a half a length, and leaving another talented rival in Any Second Now back in third.

Champagne Classic was a talented hurdler himself, he won the Martin Pipe Hurdle at the 2017 Cheltenham Festival, and he won a really strong Grade 1 three-mile novices’ hurdle at the 2017 Punchestown Festival, when he had Penhill, Monalee, Al Boum Photo and Presenting Percy behind him. He didn’t run after that until he made his chasing bow in that Grade 3 contest at Naas last month.

It looks like the National Hunt Chase is the most likely target for him at the Cheltenham Festival this year, and that makes a lot of sense. Connections already have Delta Work for the RSA Chase, and it looks like a step up to four miles will be a positive for Champagne Classic. He has Cheltenham Festival winning form, and you know that, if he does make the National Hunt Chase line-up, he is sure to have a top class amateur rider like Jamie Codd or Lisa O’Neill for company.

CoD - you and I had a pretty in-depth and long running debate about Kilbricken Storm early in the season and his target..... this part of the article 100% confirms that KS was never coming here IMO :p We'll know for next years to come to ignore any potential 4 miler horse for Tizzard

“Robbie Power thought he was flat out at Ascot, but the times were fast. It was good ground there, but hopefully the ground won’t be as quick as that at Cheltenham. He does jump very well, and he is a thorough stayer.

“At the Cheltenham Festival, all the big Irish amateur jockeys will be riding for Ireland (in the National Hunt Chase). They are like ‘professional amateurs’ – whereas in England, they are definitely amateurs.

“We had the same conversation when Native River was going to Cheltenham as a novice. We thought he was a slow and had to go in the four-miler.
“Native River has gone on to win a Gold Cup, so the four-miler is not an easier race. I think some very good horses will run in the four-miler, that will be good three-milers next year.”

... turns out Kilbricken Storm is pants so both wrong anyway :highly_amused:

We certainly did Kev! *bows head in accepted defeat.

Can't rule out a horse for the 4miler still because it is Tizzard's, though more caution will certainly be applied in future.

Haha, next time you do put one up I'll be on you like a rash

Does he have a point? A bit disrespectful to the British guys? Or fair ?

I wouldn't expect anything less :highly_amused:

Fair point IMO. Who was the last 'top' amateur from Britain?

The Dentist won a Gold Cup... and plenty of big races?

Yeah he's right :(

True, always easier when the old man has deep pockets though.

Yeah, a literal Gold Cup horse.

I hate Long Run. Get's a mention in almost every race in the country as well. "Long Run to the next"...as if I care about Long Run still Mr Commentator!

Guillaume Macaire said he was the best horse he sold!

Yeah realised that and edited my post. Not the news I was looking for as I'm large ballyward & Discorama.

That's good news then isn't it, if you're on Discorama?

So looking like...

Ok Corral - Derek O'Connor
Ballyward - Patrick Mullins
Champange Classic - Jamie Codd
Impulsive Star - Sam Waley-Cohen
Discorama - Barry O'Neill
Ibis Du Rheu - Will Biddick

Only really Lisa O'Neill to slot in? and Codd tocommit to something, but has to be CC?

From the notes at the preview with Gordon / Eddie O'Lear that qzy has posted up....

NATIONAL HUNT CHASE:
Gordon-says that he will run two here. Gun Digger jumps and stays well and will love the trip and Champagne Classic who he thinks the four miles will also suit. Jamie Codd and Lisa O'Neill will ride them with Lisa having the choice. He ays Ok corral and Ballyward are the ones to beat.

Gun Digger is a SMASHINGLY good bet at 25/1 NRNB ... he'll shorten from that price when one of these jockeys is declared... especially Codd (which I think is highly unlikely)....I'm backing it now and will worry about it later.
