March ‘25 Yankee

He'll only be 6 but he still won't be able to jump a fence well enough to win a 2mile chase at cheltenham.

He's got plenty of time to learn

Would we have said Marine Nationale would win a QMCC this time last year, I'd say not.

Is there no love for Lecky Watson in here ?
Can’t be often a BANC winner gets initial quotes of 33s to follow up in the Gold Cup and no-one is keen.
Unless I’ve missed comments ?

Edit - just taken some 33s Lecky Watson, been trimmed to 20s and 25s in a couple of places…

….plenty of love having backed him at 100-1, I have him in my GC book but I personally wouldn’t be having him in the Yankee at this point.

If we’re generally content with three, my preference would be a BANC contender for the 4th selection. First choice Derryhassen Paddy, 2nd Wendigo, 3rd Kitzbuhel.

What’s the reason for this Eggs ?
If he’s good enough for your book why not a yankee ?
There literally isn’t another race for him…

From the Bartlett, at the prices I'd have Wendigo ahead of The Big Westerner and Derryhassen Paddy. Almost brought down after the second last and did extremely well to finish fifth. Trainer says he's finished for the season and will be chasing in the autumn.

While I agree on the marine nationale point I think they could be considered different scenarios.

Marine nationale just didn't look the same horse and has steadily returned to what is his true level?
While Majborough was considered a banker for the arkle, and had looked to be in top form, although his jumping was criticised by some.

I'd also agree he has plenty of time on his hands and his jumping can improve, my doubt is that it will be over 2 miles, i think he needs to be In a race with a slower overall pace, to help with his jumping, not because he can't go with them.

….i’m happy to get him in my book as a single with cash-out option, he owes me nothing but I’m seeing him as potential at this point. Hopefully 33-1 looks good after a few appearances next season but reading diaries it’s apparently a ‘weak’ BANC and I’d see more likely GC winners at this point.

I dont think it's a Weak BANC.

Certainly.looked deeper than the Arkle.

Probably only Paulings pair missing

the injured
The Jukebox Man

the Aintree bound (Jango Baie conqueror at Grade 1)
Handstands

The Gold Cup next year could have 2 to 3 main older/experienced horses

inothewayurthinkin
Galopin
(Fact 2 File maybe)

...the rest last week, wouldn't now look too testing for the next batch of Novice Chasers moving into Open Company.

33/1 E/W for an easy, unbeaten BANC winner seems too high to me.

Him and The Jukebox Man (if he returns fit and well). Both look decent odds for E/W bets, if that's the sort of Yankee being looked at.

Hi guys, first time poster after being a lurker for a few years…

Personally, if looking at the BANC i’d rather back Final Demand. Appreciate it might be a little short as a single 12 months out at 6/1 but as part of a yankee I think it’s fair, and not too dissimilar to other suggested selections.

Having had a look at Simon Rowlands’ sectional pieces reviewing the festival on the ATR site along with his current top rated horses in each division, along with timeforms ratings review thread on X, it seems both rate the form of the turners higher than the albert bartlett. That’s probably common most years tbf. I thought Final Demand ran a cracker, looked to be coming with a winning ride until the last and kept trying right to the line to be beaten just over 5 lengths by two horses who probably just had a bit too much speed for him on the ground.

i’d say baring injury its nigh on certain that he heads to the BANC in 12 months time, rare to say with a Mullins runner. He looked the most imposing of the front three of the turners to me and he looks like he’ll be most suited to chasing. Will be an Irish bred 7 year old by race time also, this combination always tend to do well in the BANC. Won over 2m6f at the DRF and looks sure to improve at 3m, but I also like the fact he has top class form at the mid range trip. Also like The Yellow Clay but don’t think he has quite as much scope to progress over fences and slight concern Gordon mentioned he didn’t see him as a real 3 miler.

Not against any of the albert bartlett suggestions at all, I just feel future winners tend to come from a range of finishing positions, even those PU, so slightly bigger risk. Do agree Derryhassen Paddy is one of the more interesting ones at the current prices though.

Mullins won 7/13 grade 1’s this year and probably unfortunate not to get a few more (especially champ hurdle and arkle) , so think it makes sense to target some of his early on, especially one with a pretty likely target.

also agree with an earlier comment around taking Kopek Des Bordes ahead of William Munny for the arkle, again looks like a chaser and feel he has more scope for improvement being a 5 year old. Don’t think he hurdles fluently enough for a champ hurdle, although there is some doubt so can understand going with Munny after his trainer comments.

Hey, first time poster here.

With the removal of the turners novice chase and national hunt chase, I'd be really confident Jasmin Des Vaux will stay over hurdle. His jumping is another reason.

The changes in races happened late in the year last year so I think things will change for next season. Before Willie targeted the 4 novice chase and the champion hurdles with his latest crop of novice hurdlers. The stayers seemed to be an afterthought with him reflected by him only having two winners, both double figure prices.

So now he has only two novice chases and champion hurdle, I think Willie will end sending more of his better horses than previously.

I watched a Racingtv interview with Patrick Mullins at Haydock on the Saturday and he talked about the stayers aswell. Said Willie was talking about chasing but he thought hurdles. Adds to Bromley's thoughts post race that he's too small to be a chaser.

I’ll have a dart if that’s ok with you Eggs? Unless you’d really like to? Happy either way.

Spindleberry in the Mares Chase might be one to consider. 2/2 over fences and absolutely ran Bioluminescence ragged in February over 2m6 in what is supposed to be Bioluminescence preferred Soft going. Granted she was getting 10lbs but she looked very good. Does anyone know why Spindleberry didn't go to Cheltenham Festival this year ?

I’d be wary of any Mares if they’re near G1 class, unless you’re Mullins/Ricci that allowance may well be considered the difference in a championship race/Ryanair…

Many thanks to Eggs for allowing me to select this months yankee.

I agree with the general sentiment that we need to be fairly positive about a horses destination. So that has helped slim down the options put forward. That does, unfortunately, mean that prices are a little slimmer. I've also avoided the races which historically don't form until later on in the season (Ryanair, Novice Hurdles) and those which could be subject to change (Mares Hurdle and Mares Chase).

First up, I think Inothewayurthinkin - Gold Cup @ 5/1 has to go on in. First put forward by darlojim and well supported by others. On RPR's he and Galopin Des Champs are the only horses to post 180+. At 7yo, he is young enough to eek out further improvement too. I think it is generally accepted that GDC wasn't at his best this year, but he still ran creditably and the distance back to Montys Star and Gentlemansgame underscores the magnitude of the performance. The way Cromwell is talking, I would be surprised if we saw him again this year so we are unlikely to get a better price between now and the start of next season.

The novices progressing in to open company don't light my fire this year whereby I think the winner will come from this years open company horses. Fact To File could come here, but the way he raced with the choke out at a fast pace over 2m4f doesn't lend itself to the Gold Cup Trip. Realistically, I think it's between Inothewayurthinkin and GDC again.

Next up, Teahupoo - Stayers Hurdle @ 6/1. First put forward by AaronLad. Another solid selection who's target is obvious. Whilst he doesn't have the ability of Inothewayurthinkin, he is competing in a significantly lesser division. He ran creditably this year despite conditions going against him. He's highly unlikely to run on better ground next year. Competition looks thin on the ground. Jasmin De Vaux and Ballyburn could potentially shake up the market, but I can't see Teahupoo being an e/w price on the day even if they do come this way. I mulled over Rockys Diamond who was put forward a couple of times. He is a great price and has scope to improve being a 5yo, but the worry is he goes chasing - and we want a runner.

Third is William Munny - Arkle @ 12/1 first put up byCJW Target confirmed by his trainer. The Arkle could have a few quality horses running in it, but it doesn't look like being the deepest division. History tells us that (normally) one of the better novice hurdlers wins the Arkle. And this chap is the second highest rated hurdler over the shorter trip. He has a real engine and looks a chaser too. I think Kopek Des Bordes was a good winner of the Supreme, but William Munny showed enough to convince me that he could reverse the form should he get a better break of the ball or take to fences better. I can't see Romeo reversing form with WIlliam Munny over fences. Lulamba offers another potential class angle in the race, but he will need to improve and 5yo's in open races ... The Yellow Clay could be interesting here, but he has four potential destinations and the Arkle would be 3rd or 4th favourite in that list. If Kopek Des Bordes was to stay hurdling, then this chap would be my favourite for the race.

The final selection is Kitzbuhel - BANC @ 20/1 who was probably the most suggested horse in the thread. This looks a really deep division next year, but there isn't an obvious superstar. Final Demand is a worthy favourite, but he looks far from bullet proof, particularly if the ground were to come up G/S or better. Kitzbuhel looks all over a staying chaser, and the removal of the Golden Miller Chase makes it short odds on that this would be his long term target. Related to Al Boum Photo, he is bread to get the trip. I also like the fact that he didn't go to the festival this year. He's been brought along slowly.

Honourable mentions to State Man and Marine Nationale. State Man is the wrong price (16/1) but it does look a deep division. Marine Nationale is the only horse at the front of the market who will definitely run over 2m next year who doesn't have a significant injury concern. But, there is every chance that Sir Gino returns and that JP sends 1 or 2 very good darts so the 8/1 may well hold for a long while.

So the yankee is:
  • Inothewayurthinkin - Gold Cup @ 5/1
  • Teahupoo - Stayers Hurdle @ 6/1
  • William Munny - Arkle @ 12/1
  • Kitzbuhel - BANC @ 20/1
9701/1 best priced with Hills.

Cheers all.

Willie said immediately post race at Fairyhouse he thought Cheltenham would come too soon. That didn't stop the preview nights giving her some mention which sparked a little interest with punters trying to find some value against Dinoblue.

We tend to find that the vast majority of those that race post DRF for Willie aren't Cheltenham bound but should be kept in mind for Aintree/Fairyhouse/Punchestown.

Appreciate the informative reply. Thanks. I'm going in for 2026 Mares along with Only By Night.

…great stuff Exar Essay, I got a 50% boost on Hills for the e/w Acca. I tend to do a win Yankee with an e/w Acca and the Hills boost on multiples is often very generous.
