Handicap Shortlist - Cheltenham 2020

A 1lb for every year past 45.
But only allowed to ride in the new veterans race in 2022.:highly_amused:
 
I've no inside information but, when Willie galloped Al Boum Photo, Kemboy, Cadmium and Aramon at Punchestown last month, I was struck that the 5th member of the group was Blazer. He came third in the Dan Moore last year off 139 and he runs in this year's edition on Saturday off 141. He didn't make Cheltenham last year (reason unknown) and he's been dual purpose over fences and hurdles (2nd in the 2018 Galway Hurdle off 139) so a specific target is hard to identify. However, he is currently 25/1 in the Hills any race market.

I wouldn't be leaping in now but I'll be watching Saturday's race with interest.

Think they've been gagging to win a big handicap with this for a while now.
Same with Gordon and Ben Dundee.

Just very difficult to say when and where (before it's too late)

Very true.

Has to be emphasised that he's been off the track for a long time and the others from the Punchestown gallop have looked likely to come on for their first run. That's why it's a watching brief. If he pops in on Saturday, that's life. He doesn't owe me anything and it's just an intellectual exercise at this stage.

Haha. Ruby comes out of retirement at 70 to claim 30lbs in the 2050 Pertempts, I can smell the plot now :)

Interested in thoughts on this years Close Brothers.
Been lucky enough to have the winner both the last two years in Mister Whittaker and A Plus Tard, horses is backed in January, but this year I’m stumped!
The one that takes my eye at the moment is Gallant John Joe at 20s with cash back. To be upsides of Melon jumping the last on debut over Christmas and to finish well clear of the third was a promising performance... but he’s only had one run.
Any thoughts on this or any other horse?

I'm trying to work out Dallas des pictons. For the close bros
Hes in the right race at the weekend, and very likely to have the right rating unless he somehow hosed up.

But i cant help thinking they may revert back to hurdles for the martin pipe.

Can anybody see why he'd step up in trip?

Arguably, his best hurdle performances have been over 2m4f and there are two Festival chase handicaps over about 2m4f?

Very fair points. Hes a little hard to read in relation to whether he'd be seen to better effect over 2m4 or not, as he travel so sweetly.
I'm not sure if hes being brought along to peak over 2m. Or gordon's purposely keeping him over 2 to get the mark he now has, and step up.

Either way, I have no doubt that he has a big pot in him off his current mark.

Snugsborough hall is one ive got my eye on for the Grand Annual not sure if hes been mentioned on here but he looked like he needed the run over hurdles recently after a long lay off.
 
Good chat about Sire Du Berlais, 17.5/1 boosted has twisted my arm for at least a point. Watching the race back there are a few times in the last mile where he looks like he's going backwards, as Scooby says faces a fair bit of traffic as a result but still gets up. Obvs not well handicapped but not hard to see him running another big race at a reasonable price. Him, The Storyteller and Tedham should be me done in this race
 
Croco bay @ 50/1 for a repeat in the Grand annual surely worth a few quid each way.

A 13 y o. But only 41 career runs and only a couple of pounds higher than last year.
Thought it won snuggly from a good yardstick Bun Doran with rest well spread out.
Probably been laid out for the race again so at 50/1s worth a tickle.
 
That previous festival winners old boys club is getting bigger this year.
Faugheen. UDS, Thistlecrack, Hazel Hill & Croco Bay.
