But if the market is on the SSBT, in that particular Coral/Lads shop, then why can’t you place a cash bet across the counter on that market? Especially if there isn’t a price on the behind the counter system?

Logically it has to be either margin, liability management or/and taxation……either way it is a bad sign IMO for the future, as how long before all bets have to go through the SSBT?
Hills stopped you betting on ante post horses over the counter about 3 years ago, they want all their ante post liabilities managed by the machine and whatever they've programmed it to allow, so naturally stakes are usually restricted.

We can all see the direction of travel; more and more of us have online accounts restricted and all high stret bookmakers will continue to close shops, less and less bets/money placed on horse racing in particular so funding the sport spirals into an even deeper crisis, and even this clown outfit of a government are using language that puts gambling on the same level as vape shops and illegal trading.
And there's no reverse button in life....

Once again I am stunned, but thanks for the info Ista 👍

Not sure why this hasn’t this been reported in the racing press as it’s a pretty fundamental change to LBO bet acceptance, regardless of nowadays being able (or not) to get on or/and affordability checks etc?

Next time I am in a local Lad/Coral i’ll check whether they have followed suit on ante post Horses

This strategy smacks of turnover migration and liability management.

Migration of over the counter business to machines (SSBT’s) and then the natural progression for the customer to use their phone app - no LBO required

Liability management where computer manages acceptance and liability, without having to trust staff to comply with acceptance procedures - result higher margin, although less turnover IMO

So bookmakers ARE partly masters of the own demise as through their LBO business migration strategy to online and business restrictions through supposed liability management, together with overt promotion of alternative products such as Football and AWP’s, then Horse Racing turnover continues its ever increasing decline trend and LBO closures continue

I believe the Horse Racing Levy is at a record level at the moment, but this has been delivered through higher margin off a reduced declining turnover……..great as a one off year but this cannot be sustained as margin is by nature ‘volatile’ and taking more from less custom is a path to business failure

The future doesn't look great for FJ’s betting enjoyment and ante post Festival betting etc…..unless that is we become perennial losers, then we shouldn’t have any problems whatsoever 😂

A very obvious answer and a very big bugbear of mine; the racing press basically rely on advertising revenue from bookmakers so they will never publish anything negative about their paymasters.
I know/knew a few people at the R Post and have attempted to get them to cover bookmaker behaviour/account restrictions but they flatly refuse for that reason, so we are stuck in a situation where the sports public representatives (media) will never cover the subject from an unbiased position, which has to be the biggest rule of journalism broken.
They (the R Post) have bombarded us with affordability stuff and how this will kill racing completely ignoring the fact that bookmakers created the funding crisis by restricting just about every regular punter, affordability checks have only been a thing for about 5 years, account restrictions have been prevalent for 20+ years.
I'm resigned to it, we'll never get it back, the game as we knew it is done, embrace the options that remain or give up and wait for the sport to die a death...

Pretty sure , you can still make over the counter A/P bets at Corals , I've done one or two this year , .. But , I tend to use the machines now for most bets , as it saves the hassle of getting the person behind the counter from having to look it up .
Yes , I know it's their job ! , the staff in my local corals are good people , competent .
But sometimes , they don't have all the prices up .
I think it's usually when there's a big meeting on , Ascot , Goodwood e.t.c. , .
Even the machines , this year had the arkle and champion hurdle markets on there ,
But they wouldn't let you actually place any bet , o.k. now though.

How do chaps. Not been on since Gold Cup day. Usually I'm balls deep in antepost slips by this point but none this year 😭

Got no online accounts left and not kept up to date with any news whatsoever regarding the jumps so have a lot of catching up to do on here. I've been completely out of the loop apart from me and Darlo going through an Arab card at Compiegne on twitter a couple of months ago 😂 so I've been mulling. I wasn't going to go around again but I think I might just bide my time this year and have some juicy bets at reduced prices later in the season and treat the handicaps as a stand alone thing. Everything will be done in the shops for me now but even that is fraught with dangers these days 😂 so I'm going to spend the weekend going through FJ, seeing what I've missed and going to try and get up and running 👊
