Cheltenham weather forecast

Dull and overcast here in Cheltenham today. We had a bit of rain yesterday but nothing to worry about.
If I was a betting man (which I am) I would be backing 'Good To Soft' for day 1 of the festival.

Thanks Nick - Keep the updates coming.:encouragement:

I feel that may be a bit optimistic Nick. There's going to be heavy rain lashing down all afternoon & night. With periods of rain predicted for everyday bar one between now and Tuesday and the ground is already soft.
I think soft at the very best.

The racing post have over played it. It will be atleast gd to soft in places imo. If not the standard good to soft.

I'm no groundsman but, as I understand it, drying out doesn't rely solely on soil absorbing moisture and evaporation has a part to play. Obviously the air temperature is a factor in this but the more grass there is, the larger the surface for evaporation. In winter there is little or no grass growth and lower temperatures inhibit evaporation. Double figure temperatures and the reported recent grass growth hint that the ground will dry out at a reasonable rate without taking into account further rain.
I'd say that Sunday's going report and weather forecast would be key in predicting Tuesday's ground and it's not worth getting into a lather until then.

With the heavy rain coming in today and continuing through the early hours i'll be amazed if it's not soft all over the course tomorrow. And with rainy periods over the weekend it'll stay soft. Only time will tell. But i wouldn't be too displeased with soft as i'm heavily involved AP on B-Dair who'll win on the snaffle in soft ground :encouragement:

Even if it rains heavily today and tomorrow it will dry quickly, it always does. Cheltenham is open and often quite windy. Wind, temperature and the soil absorbing moisture all play their part. It will be good to soft, soft in places on day 1.

Anyone in Cheltenham able to give an update on how heavy the rain is?

It is raining and puddles on the pavement are forming but wouldnt call it heavy. Its just consistent and the clouds are still relatively dark

The rain is pretty set in Chelt at the mo. Not hammering it down by any stretch.

Do turftrax update on the ground daily?

Its hammering down in Cardiff, flooding everywhere. Nothing normally stops me going to my local, but this is... Got to go heavy overnight.

Not convinced what happens 75 miles away is guaranteed to be replicated at HQ.
Love the fact 112 comments on the weather and only 37 on the Grant National thread...

I'm in Cheltenham and its been steady to light rain all afternoon and this evening. It's pretty wet out there but the temperatures today have reached 13 degrees.

I think tomorrow is around 15 degrees so will dry up a bit..

Hasn't wales got it's own weather system, Went over the severn bridge once years ago, its was dry this side as soon as I got over the bridge I never seen rain that heavy and it did not stop for 24hrs.

Has wales got its own weather system :highly_amused:

Every time I go to Wales (which is a lot) then it rains. Good job the festival isn't at Chepstow :)
