Cheltenham Festival Handicaps

Irish independent says Mall Dini gets 143 which is Ok for Kim Muir? Typically I've backed for ultima..

He has an Irish rating of 142 and no English rating yet so he could still be above the 145 ceiling for the Kim Muir. Until the entries are out you won't know his fate.

"Last year's Festival winner Mall Dini has gotten a mark of 143 which will get him into the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir, the Irish Independent understands, though he has other options too."

Strange that they know before the entries and weights have been confirmed......

Very... you'd in the first instance have to assume the paper have got it wrong? Or am I being very naive?

If the Irish papers are anything like the English papers then it's odd on they've made it up :-)

I genuinely can't decide which race for Mall Dini which is annoying as would like to get stuck into him now. What makes you think Ultima rather than Kim Muir FM?

The jockey. Davey Russell always rides this horse and gets on with him very well indeed. I doubt they'd want to risk having an amateur on board.

I think Mall Dini had an entry in England so that's how they know his rating - might be wrong though.

Ask Matt Chapman, he has Phil Smith on at the races in 5mins..

Ask the handicapper is great and the two produce brilliant debate.
However as a Matt Chapman defender I was really really disappointed he didn’t push Phil more on the crafty butcher situation.
Every time Phil comes on he defends his decision to raise Irish horses in the handicap. He states that the Irish handicapper does a great job for Irish handicaps but the scale used is not in sync with Britain so he needs to raise the Irish horses to bring it in line. I’ve no real problem with that if the scale is off. However what he done with the crafty butcher was disgusting. To prevent the horse creeping in at the bottom of the handicap for the Kim Muir he lowered the horse a few pounds (3 I think) to make sure he couldn’t get in. Obviously the crafty butcher would have had a huge chance off bottom weight. Phils attitude was basically – if they don’t like it run him again before the festival weights are announced and i’ll judge it again. They shouldn’t have had to do that – they most likely wanted the horse fresh for the festival instead of running a few weeks beforehand somewhere on poor ground. Also if he goes out and wins on this mark which is lower than it should be he’ll go up quite a bit in the handicap and no longer be close to the bottom weight.
Phil has basically stuck up a big you are not welcome sign for connections to this horse and its disgusting. Matt didn’t do his job/research in not grilling him more on this one

I think you can enquire as to your handicap mark at any point. As long as there is sufficient info to give one, they will.

The Davy Russel angle would be strong with regards to the target indeed.

I've been keeping an eye on Mall Dini's entries but have never seen him entered over here although I could have missed it. Either way I want to see the weights before I wasn't 100% confident.

Although it would require manpower and additional administration, it would be so much better if Irish horses had an English rating logged without having to enter horses for the sake of it. The Crafty Butcher example is clear that if they had known in time that they could have reacted. Likewise it would also mean that Gordon Elliott would not have to make 50 entries at the trials meeting just to see the UK marks before withdrawing them

Just reading yesterday Michael Buckley owner is targeting close brothers handicap with hammersly lake, bet365 got bk to me with a quote 16-1 looks to have that right sort of profile for the race was expecting better odds.

Very talented horse especially on decent ground.
Not a fan of 9yo novices but this one looks to hold a decent chance, rated 140....

Fahy has made use of Katie Walsh this season, as well as Derek O'Connor, so if he could find a way to pull either of these to ride Mall Dini, I would be interested.

I've backed him NRNB at 12/1 anyway, he won't be that price on the day.

I thought he was 3m bound on day one ?
If so they won't need an amateur pilot
