Cheltenham 2017 Antepost Bets

Distance betting is always interesting, most pilots ride horses to the line but there have been several cases of them stroking the horses ears 100 yards out, Sprinter Sacre and Simonsig won their Arkles comfortably without racking up the distance so I think the over can be dangerous.
You have a 1.04/1 double, I'd be inclined to sit on that and cheer regardless of them winning half a track or half a length....

I quite agree. I was looking at this double yesterday, certainly one to invest in, the only dangers being the fences they are jumping IMO.

I would hate to lose a bet after having two winners. However I think with the 9/4 price that I'd rather have 4 points at 9/4 than 9 at even ... with these two particular horses....

I have the double just for the wins at 11/1 so I probably shouldn't even be considering this :very_drunk:

Did anyone play thr over 5.5l Thistlecrack winning the King George ?
Tom Scu waving to the family and cuddling the horse for the final 150 yards bery costly....

I know someone on facebook who did - he wasn't very happy at all

And this is why I never bet distances.

The jockeys job is to have that horses head in front at the line whether it be a nose or 50 lengths, the distance is irrelevant to them, as long as they win that is all that matters and rightly so. Gambling is hard enough at the best of times, to add extra hurdles (excuse the pun) is just asking for trouble IMO.

The bookmakers clearly make money from these type of bets otherwise they wouldn't be on offer.

And the other thing that betting distance overs needs is fallers, and do we really want to cheer on horses falling with potentially fatal outcomes ?

Difference between cheering something on and making money - if anyone is cheering at a horse falling they shouldn't be involved in the sport.

I think CorD is right, that in general these are losing bets.

Infact, WH are actively offering a boost for a fav that wins by 5L you get a free bet I think.... "High 5" is it? Must be a money spinner for them with the same principles a being discussed.

All that said, I still think 9/4 is a fair price for it

Latest offering

I've decided to have my first big double today.

Airlie Beach in the Mares Novice at 3/1
Unowhatimeanharry in the Stayers at 6/4

So 9/1 the double. Think these two could end up nearer Evs on the day, especially once WPM removes a few from the Mares Novice and Ruby is declared aboard AB.

Is Zabana heading for Ryanair?

Think he runs in the Irish gold cup this weekend Isty, just have a feeling they may think he doesn't have what it takes to tackle the GC, so the Ryanair could be their race of choice, only backing with nrnb bookies so seems worth the chance at the price

Airlie Beach @ 5/2
Death Duty @ 9/4
Thistlecrack @ 6/4
A Toi Phil @ 20/1
Yankee, 11 bets

I'm tempted to split my stakes on the Altior Douvan double and then the double at 5/1+ lengths.

I very rarely take up these offers, mainly for the reasons stated in this thread but I can see the value in this special.
The idea of backing both horses in what really would have to be large stakes and losing out by a length or so even if they were so dominant would be heart wrenching but at least by backing the double i'd still win, albeit being slightly annoyed

How many points are you thinking?

Might be one of the Doubles that the bookies offer some boosts on in the lead up? (Wishful thinking)

I was thinking whether there may be an enhanced double at some point but can't see it being better than evens.

Approx 25 points is my thinking - 10 points on the 9/4 Special, 15 points Evens Win...:o

I see. As unlikely as it seems, Yorkhill could rock up in the Arkle? That'd scupper the bet?

Not sure Slybet will accept 10 points on it either? haha

I think they're as close to certainties as you can get in NH racing though. Are you not a little torn because you have Altior backed at a nice price? Without going back through I think it was a few points?

Haha!! Yeah got to worry about that one too! :highly_amused:

Altior on his own is covered quite nicely for me yeah - I just feel like this is one of those doubles that don't come around too often (not the price but the talent of both horses coupled with the lack of any meaningful opposition). If i'm honest I also like the fact I only have to wait until the second day of the festival for the outcome - i'll know my fate halfway through the festival which I like. (they may both be a certainty but that type of bet would get me sweating!!:p)

I mean even Sprinter at 1/4 in his 2013 Queen Mother win - he was a certainty but he had a horse like Sizing Europe in there that was worthy of taking him on.

Latest double

Uxizandre QM 16/1
Zabana Ryanair 12/1

Price trimmed on Zabana, obviously not the only one thinking this could be his target

Skybet getting wise to using Altior or Douvan as price push doubles with other horses.
Tried to get Western Ryder up to 30/1 by doubling with Altior and was limited to £15, I can have what I like on the single at 20/1....
