Champion Bumper 2021

I’m not disputing Sir Gerhard’s ability he is clearly talented, but there are so many horses that have yet to see a racecourse who could easily be similarly talented.
October is not the month to be declaring certainties for any race, let alone the bumper...

I agree on that, nothing’s a certainty in antepost betting, and anyone that think they have backed a certainty 5 months ahead of time, good luck to you.

At least Sir G runs in a race without any obstacles to get over, which cuts out one big issue that all the other runners in the 27 other races have to encounter - if they actually get there.

I was very, very taken with Sir Gerhard. May have beaten absolutely nothing but he just oozed class. The turn of foot to power clear was something else. Certainly the most impressed I've been with a bumper performance for some time.

I’m the same. In recent years, I wasn’t that impressed by Blue Sari, Malone Road or Envoi Allen pre Cheltenham 2019 who put up the best performances before the festival. In 2020, I did like Appreciate It at the Dublin festival but again wasn’t massively blown away. Ferny Hollow winning the race last year looked a decent performance. I thought they were all very good but none of the horses I’ve mentioned were world-beaters visually in bumpers imo. Obviously you can only beat what is in front of you and of course EA for example has already done more than SG is ever like to do by going unbeaten over hurdles in his novice season and being 9/9 under rules. He looks a superstar but as a bumper horse, I never thought he was a superstar visually.

However, to my eye, that Sir Gerhard performance was the best bumper run of any horse I’ve seen in many a year. Perhaps since Fayonagh won the Champion Bunper of 2017. SG went absolutely through the gears and when he got to someone near top gear, they were all beaten in a matter of a strides. You could literally see him lengthening and powering away from them. They could be trees and im sure the form of that race will be watched in earnest by many on here now but even if every horse lost by 10 lengths next time out, I’d still be expecting SG to win next time out. He just looked so so good.

It’s just far too early to be saying the horse wins the bumper. It’s November the 1st after all. But what I would say is that I already think he’s good enough to contest the race.. which is remarkable considering he should improve for his debut like most do. It’s nice to have an exciting horse in a division like this to look forward to over the winter months. Perhaps, just perhaps, he’s as good as he was made to look the other day and a star has genuinely just been born.

And I very much doubt Willie has fired any real bullets yet, so until he does, Sir Gerhard is only the best we’ve seen so far. Admittedly you can’t fail to be impressed but he’s not in the winners enclosure and bets paid out in October.

Do you not think there are probably a dozen others quietly chewing grass in an Irish field who could also blow us away ?

Yes, 100%.

Stating the obvious, but looking forward to see what the best of Willie's are, as usual :)

Deploy The Getaway and Reality Cheque are the two I'm currently interested in from the Mullins yard.

How have these two fared under rules so far ?

They both only have a PtP victory to their name. Deploy The Getaway would have been part of the bumper team last season but met with a setback, he's now back and will be running in a bumper at some point. I'm not sure if they will kick on with hurdling given his age though and the fact Sir G covers the bumper angle for them already. Reality Cheque took two attempts to win his PtP and will likely start in a bumper too, however, he's also a 5yo so could go hurdling too.

Apologies JM my comment was extremely facetious, I was highlighting the fact they hadn’t raced under rulea and it was a direct reference the the discussion of last night/early this morning...

In that case I misunderstood your intent :D

You will see from my comments that I'm not calling the winner at this stage either and that's despite the fact I was one of the earliest band members beating the Sir G drum, albeit I started off with the view he'd go hurdling.

Has anyone called the winner yet? Think people have just said SG looked special the other day but no more than that.

DTG is of definite interest. I'm just waiting on an entry and I'll make my play on him also.

I'm not sure I can respond to that without incurring a 7 day ban :p

Anybody got quotes post race on Brooklyn Glory after her win in yesterdays Cork bumper. Given an RPR of 128 and would get the mares allowance if aimed at Cheltenham

There could well be Ista but normally someone has had a titbit about them by now and they have been mentioned so they must be kept very under wraps the past month or so. Time will tell I guess.

David Mullins said last year Willies could barely separate Deploy The Getaway, Ferny Hollow and Appreciate It at home. Must be some tool. I've him backed.

I was in the market for a store at the Land Rover sale in August and fancied a Leading Light filly if she was the right price. It wasn't to be because she cost more than I was prepared for. When I expressed surprise to my agent he said that it was bought for Nicky Henderson because they had the Mahler half brother and thought he might be one of their better 4yo bumper horses.

The name? Firestep. No entries yet and possibly one to follow with interest rather than money.

Repeat of post seemingly lost in the ether between servers:
From Henderson stable tour.
"I love Firestep so much I recently bought his three-year-old half-sister. He's owned by Charlie Dingwall and some pals and does everything right."

Be careful with backing any Henderson horse for the Cheltenham Bumper. He doesn't like the race at all and will avoid it at all costs if he can.
