2026 Ultima Handicap

I see what you're saying, but, as a backer, I'd definitely not want:

1, a really hard race over that distance, this close to the festival
2, him bolting up and being raised a chunk of weight
3, him falling and potentially picking up an injury or something that might interrupt his training

Assuming he's going to be trying to win to get into the National, then I'd also not want him running poorly as it would temper enthusiasm as to his current form. To be honest, I don't really want a festival horse trying to win a race this close to the festival. However, I'm stuck with my bet and ruling all the above out, a gentle unseat early on, through some innocuous mishap, would be my preference,
Given the form of the yard I'd say any hopes of him bolting up anywhere might be a bit fanciful!

As a backer, a nice 2L beating of Minella Drama over 3m round Kelso on Friday would be ideal. Though maybe their actual Ultima horse will be going there instead...

King Of Answers declared in the same race at Kelso that Myretown won before the Ultima last year. 3pm Friday.

Love that horse, has impressed me, other than last time. Would surely want to be winning to get in though as only rated 130 atm.
Myretown won it off 127 last year.
We'll have a better idea when entries come out but a lot of the handicaps struggle to fill these days so most get in if they declare.

And just like that, Q talks me into playing KoA 😂😂. Yes Myretown snuck in, could be dicey though….no risk, no reward!….won’t be getting 25s if he bolts up Friday.

Quirky track Windsor kauto but ran on great and would have won in another furlong , I’ve a feeling Myretown will run in ultima and king in the national hunt chase

Yea, I’m still getting to grips with Windsor form since National hunt returned there. Now must be honest, the NH chase hadn’t even crossed my mind, a potentially interesting thought you have there!

Can we really expect Myretown to run (and win) at Haydock, then go well in the Ultima off a mark 5/6/7lb higher, then take on his main target which is the National, all of which come 8 weeks apart ?
Personally I think he'll skip Cheltenham if he wins at Haydock....

Not sure if it's the plan, but Crest of Fortune is standing out more and more on my not-so-shortlist. Would hope he gets declared for the Reynoldstown tomorrow (jocked up), a race not without pointers to the Ultima. Always looks like he has needed a trip, decent course form on chase debut over shorter, best run over hurdles when stepped up to 3m at Aintree. I like the staying on John Francome form; it's only him bleeding last time out that sours things.

But 25/1 NRNB feels decent.

Just needs to get his best chasing RPR if he does run on Saturday now 👀 Regardless, I'd hope that if he does get a 4th run, and performs well enough to get an Ultima ticket, he'd surely go off shorter. If not, it's money back.

Have taken the 25/1 NRNB with 365. Can see Myretown missing the race for the National and KOA stepping into his spot.

I'd be thinking along those lines with Western Knight - best run over hurdles was 3m round Cheltenham, and Tizzard has used the Reynoldstown as an Ultima prep for The Changing Man and Oscar Elite in the last few years. Does lack experience in big field handicaps mind.
